OBJECTIVE
This standard covers the storage and handling of the materials listed above. The information herewithin is important and should
be followed for reasons of safety and quality. This standard applies to any P&G site using the materials listed above.
For safety specifics and detailed chemical behaviour of the material, the appropriate supplier’s MSDS (Material Safety Data
Sheet) should be referred to.
This standard serves to form the basis for more detailed plant specific standard operating procedures and manufacturing standards.

MATERIAL DESCRIPTION
MCAS particle is composition of natural C24AS. The alcohol is derived from palm kernel oil, and is either of the “mid cut” type.
For more details please refer to the Raw material Specifications (MRMP/IRMP).

MATERIAL CHARACTERISTICS
Three points raise our attention for the material characterization, the particle size distribution, the dust explosivity and the
temperature sensitivity.

The method of drying of the MCAS paste (and post-drying handling) can lead to different types of MCAS particle. Roughly we
can divide the available material in 3 different types of MCAS powders and the use of an extruder at the end of / after the drying
process can give MCAS needles:

is targeted to be used the feeder and safety assessment needs to be redone which can influence this
RMPI.

Dust Explosivity

The MCAS material is a Dust Explosive particle (Class 2, i.e. Strong Explosion, KST= 190-240 m·bar/s).
The Minimum Ignition Energy (MIE) of MCAS is 15-20 mJ. See to Enovia attached document for test results.
The safety precaution to be taken to deal with this type of particle are detailed in the next section (Storage & Handling).
Temperature Stability of MCAS: Please refer to Basis Page for GCAS 98602786.

MCAS Typical characteristics: To note, the following are typical characteristics extra are cuptured in the Raw Material
Standards. If in any doubt or for more specific information, the relevant supplier should be contacted.

RECEIPT & UNLOADING

P&G plants will receive MCAS particle in 600 kg Big bags.
Because of the risk of dust explosivity we recommend against the use of small bags of 20-25 kg. Handling of these bag will
generate more dust and secondly more manual handling is requirered, hence more exposure of operator to risk. If the material
must be received in small bags (for instance at contract manufacturer), we recommend to contact local safety to discuss the
appropriate safety measures.

Receiving
 Confirm big bag / bags is in good condition and with no signs of damage.
 Confirm Big Bag used is per specified in the RMP

Truck Unloading
Move big bag or bags directly from the truck to the dedicated storage area (strongly recommended to be airconditioned whenever
it is ready on site). Double stacking is allowed according Stability tests conducted at P&G NIC. If the weight of top bag is not
directy transferred to the bottom bag will also minimize MCAS caking.

STORAGE & HANDLING

Material Temperature
The material has the tendency to cake in higher temperatures and high moisture environments, as per RMP specification.
Therefore the material should always be stored in an area where the temperature is controlled below limits specified on RMP. The
recommendation is to enclose and air condition the dedicated area of the warehouse.
Cabuyao Plant is allowed to store MCAS (GCAS 98602786) at ambient condition for up to 1 month from materal receipt in the
plant. This is because that the full scale storage test result has confirmed the good RM flowability after this storage condition. If
the storage exceed 1 month, re-test on the following parameters needs to be done and must pass all criteria before the material can
be released or used in production.

Action Release criteria

1. Appearance check Follow MRMP 97274400 limits (BLUE MCAS needle use 91837507)
2. Moisture Follow MRMP 97274400 limits (BLUE MCAS needle use 91837507)
3. Measure the RM temperature <=35degC

Enclosure - The recommended building material for the enclosure is a Metal Sandwich Panel (e.g. such as supplied by Isocab®).
This Panel provides structural and insulation and required only a light frame. The door should be made of plastic curtains to
facilitate traffic in and out of the room. The alternate method is to enclose the feeder area and day bin with plastic curtain to
facilitate traffic around the feeder.

Cooling Equipment - The recommended cooling equipment is a simple off the shell split unit. 7kW capacity should be sufficient
for 100m2 area (1000m3 volume).

Bins / Hoppers - The recommended material of construction (MOC) for MCAS is SS304.

Feeders - The recommended material of construction (MOC) for MCAS is SS304. MCAS particle was assessed to be suitable for
both screw and belts feeder but screw feeders are preferred as they generate less dust (recommendation is to proceed with Flex-
Wall feeders). It is also recommended sizing the equipment so that we are using a low screw rpm to limit the amount of dust
generated.

Pneumatic conveying: No data is yet available on whether this material can be pneumatically conveyed. Hence, it is not allowed to
used this type of transportation at this stage. Should this be required, extra safety and quality testing will need to be conducted and
aligned with the GTO.

Dumping:Given MCAS is a Class 2 dust explosive material the following measures should be taken into account when dumping
the material:
 Use antistatic type A big bags with polyethylene inner liner.
 Ground the antistatic bags by connecting to ground via grounding clamp/cable.
 Equip operators with anti-static footwear and gloves (if gloves are used).
 All electrical equipment inside or in contact with the product shall be approved for the use in zones containing explosive dust
either airborne or layered.

Container Handling
Big Bags:
 Double stacking is allowed taking as basis the stability tests conducted at NIC, this is the outcome of this tests:

Uniaxial cake strength testing:

Data generated upto 50ºC simulating single and double big bag stacking for Galaxy 95% MCAS granule vs. reference materials of
Wibarco 80% MCAS and also LoAgg AE1S agglomerate shows similar tendancy to produce caking, however this is improved vs.
current MCAS.

The chart below shows the peak stresses measured on the samples from fresh to 7days under constant consolidation and
temperature.

The uniaxial data can also be represented in a flow function/ flow regime as indicated in the below chart. It clearly shows that the
Galaxy MCAS under the same conditions as current Wibarco MCAS has improved flow and handling.

 Store bags in dedicated, airconditioned area in the warehouse (to avoid degradation in flowability).
If the temperature is not kept at or below USL on the RMP at all times (except for limited periods during material
discharge and feeding, maximum duration of 24 hours, after which the material needs to be removed from the feeder
and returned to the cooled warehouse) will lead to handling issues(flowability) and/or quality issues (hydrolysis) in the
Plants.

Note: Cabuyao Plant is allowed to store MCAS (GCAS 98602786) at ambient condition for up to 1 month from materal
receipt in the plant. This is because that the full scale storage test result has confirmed the good RM flowability after this
storage condition. If the storage exceed 1 month, re-test on the following parameters needs to be done and must pass all
criteria before the material can be released or used in production.

 Ensure Big Bag is grounded when dumping material (see above for other safety measures while dumping)

Safety Requirements:
MCAS is a Class 2 dust explosive material (See Material Characteristics for more details). Specific measure must be put in place
to cope with this. These are detailed below. The requirements are similar to the ones of particle such as TAED.

Important note :
1. This section provides basic guidelines for the safe design of the handling systems for MCAS (Mid-Cut Alkyl
Sulphate) particle – RMP 98602786 and 91940461/91652505/90849757/91837507. If a different RMP is used this
guidance document and the below outlined preventive and protective measures must be revised
2. All below requirements apply to big bag dumping (i.e. big bag dumping, hopper, LIW, belt)

The sites introducing/using MCAS will have to ensure:

 the chemical is handled through the site Change Management System
 the chemical is cleared via the Site Chemical Clearance System
 an MSDS,of the chemical is be available on site (prefer to have one version in local language)

Preventive Measures -
The following preventive measures shall under all conditions be fully met:

 Use conductive equipment and ground all components. Avoid the use of non-conductive materials including coatings on
metals.
 Reduce the transfer rate by minimizing the free fall distance for particles. This can be achieved by minimizing vessel
size, using zig-zag pipe arrangements or directing the particle flow towards a vessel wall.
 Use antistatic type A big bags
 Ground the antistatic bags by connecting to ground via grounding clamp/cable.
 If electrostatic eliminators are being considered to dissipate the charge on an insulating surface, contact consultants with
expertise in this field.

 Equip operators with anti-static footwear and gloves (if gloves are used). When wearing anti-static footwear, the
resistance to ground must be: 5 x 104 ohm < Resistance to ground < 1 x 108 ohm. The resistance of the surface on which
the operator is standing must be less than 1 x 108 ohm. Base concrete should have sufficient conductivity to meet this
requirement while coated concrete surfaces may not.
 All electrical equipment inside or in contact with the product shall be approved for the use in zones containing explosive
dust either airborne or layered.
 Define and document the correct zoning and provide classification for electrical equipment inside and around equipment.
Not needed for storage.
 Bearings of rotating equipment to be outside the product stream (so called “outboard bearings”).
 Rotating equipment with a tip speed above 10 m/s to be made from non-spark generating materials. Below 1 m/s there
are no requirements. Between 1-10 m/s tip speed every case has to be judged separately.
 Filter bags of dedicated dust filters to be of antistatic material.

Protective Measures
Protective measures can be explosion relief, explosion containment, explosion suppression, or any combination of these. To
prevent propagation of a dust explosion to other parts of the process, one must use rotary valves and/or screw conveyors (in
powder flow), explosion disconnect, quick sliding gate valves (in dust flow).

The total package of protective measures depends on type, size and location of the particle handling system.

1. Binless system are not required, however they can be used. They are not recommended for site with medium to high
throughput.
2. The use of N2 blanketing is not required.

Filters
1. Explosion relief to be calculated based on the dirty side of the filter. Relief to always be to the outside in a safe direction.
Relief ducts in general to be no longer than 3m. Calculation to be documented in the Process Safety Study.
2. Explosion relief and containment have preference over suppression systems.
3. All dedicated dust filters must be protected via an explosion panel (designed based on Kst = 250 bar.m/s and Pmax = 10
bar).
4. Combined filters may not need to be protected only if it can be proven by calculations, process conditions and dust
explosion test on dust samples that the dust in the filter is never dust explosive! Provisions must always be made to
ensure MCAS can never be alone in the filter. Rule of thumb : mixed with 70% inert material, no protection needed.
5. Large filters require a fire water deluge system installed in the clean air side above the filter bag plate, e.g.:
a. size 2-10 m3 : manual system acceptable
b. size above 10m3 : automatic system with Ti in the dust inlet and air outlet recommended (settings at 70 degrees
C)

Hopper
1. Hopper must be kept below 2m3. In case of a bigger volume protection is required e.g. explosion panel.
2. Pneumatic filling must not be used.
3. Bucket elevators have by their nature a high risk for mechanical sparks and are relatively expensive to protect and hence
are not allowed.
4. Equipment designed for explosion containment requires that all inlets/outlets are designed that the explosion pressure
cannot propagate to neighbor equipment. The fact whether this neighbor equipment is protected or not is not relevant.
5. Provisions must always be made to automatically shutdown process equipments in case of a dust explosion; e.g. limit
switch on explosion panel, break wire in bursting panel, …

Other HS&E requirements when introducing MCAS

1. Risk assessment to be conducted for all new equipment and changes/modifications to currently used equipment, e.g. new
storage tanks, new process equipment, new packing equipment, new chemicals, …
2. All contractor safety program rules to be followed (e.g. general safety rules, specific JSPs, hot works, working on
heights, …).
3. Process Safety Studies to be developed for all applicable process.
4. P&IDs to be developed and available for HS&E for approving before construction.
5. All welding to be done by qualified welders
6. Machine Directive to be followed to ensure compliance with the essential HS&E requirements of the Machine Directive
98/37/EC for all new/replaced/modified/changed equipment.
7. Detailed machine risk assessment to be conducted on all new/replaced/modified/changed equipment/machines so that
fundamental safety items (e.g. guarding, emergency stops, safety disconnects, safety switches, ...) are identified, and that
appropriate operating limitations are provided when needed.
8. JSA/JSP to be completed and all employees/contractors to be trained and qualified prior to start-up. All new JSA/JSP to
be available to the operators.

Shelf-life
If the material is stored properly (below USL on RMP) the material is expected to be stable .

Shelf Life 1 year

- Measure activity of raw material per MRMP/IRMP

Action Required if - Check physical appearance of raw material per MRMP/IRMP.
Shelf Life Exceeded - Contact R&D if activity is out of limits or if product appearance is not
normal (product caked or off color).
