Passage

2 Pointing to a boy seated at the back of the classroom, Mrs Lee said,
“How about you, Darren?”

3 “I would like to be a veterinarian because I love animals!” Darren

declared.

4 Darren continued, “I know that vets take care of animals such as dogs
and horses that are feeling under the weather or injured. Sometimes,
they are required to perform surgery1 if an animal has a broken limb
or when its health is failing.”

5 “You’re right! Most veterinarians also carry out vaccinations2 and

advise pet owners about the care of their pets,” Mrs Lee added. “A
few vets have chosen to work in zoos and take care of tiger cubs,
koalas and even sharks!”

6 Darren exclaimed, “I did not know that! What else do vets do, Mrs
Lee?”

7 “Some vets work in hospitals or laboratories. They study animal

diseases and try to find cures. Others are experts on treating animals
with cancer3, heart or skin problems,” Mrs Lee elaborated.

1 surgery: medical treatment of injuries or diseases that involves cutting open a person’s body
and often removing or replacing some parts
2 vaccinations: giving a person or an animal a substance that is put into the blood to protect
them against a disease
3 cancer: a serious disease in which growths of cells, also called cancers, form in the body and
kill normal body cells. The disease often causes death.

Passage

8 “Wildlife veterinarians collaborate with governments to ensure that

endangered animals in the wild are not threatened by human activity,”
Mrs Lee went on. “Veterinarians have also trained to be astronauts!
Dr Martin Fettman was the first veterinarian to go to space. He carried
out experiments to measure the effect of gravity4 on rats.”

9 Sophie, a bashful student seated in front, raised her hand and asked
softly, “How does one become a vet, Mrs Lee?”

10 “Well, you have to study very hard and do well in mathematics and
science. If you have a pet at home, whether it is a goldfish or a kitten,
you can learn a lot about animals by taking care of them. You can be a
successful vet if you love animals and have an inquiring mind!” Mrs
Lee answered with a smile.

11 Darren suggested, “If you want to know what it is like to become a

veterinarian, you could volunteer at a local pet shelter when you are a
little older! My elder sister volunteers at SPCA5 every fortnight and I
plan to join her in a few years’ time!”

4 gravity: the force that attracts objects in space towards each other, and that on the earth pulls
them towards the centre of the planet, so that things fall to the ground when they are dropped

It was a balmy Saturday morning. The weather Introduction

was perfect for a day at the beach. Mum, Dad, my

sister, Abigail, and I spread the picnic blanket in a

A Picnic at the Beach
Scaffolded Response

While Mum prepared the sandwiches for our Rising Action

picnic, Dad joined Abigail and me in a game of tag.

As Dad chased us along the shore, we laughed and

shrieked with excitement. Before long, our stomachs

began to growl. It was time for lunch!

All of us were ravenous and devoured the egg Climax

and cheese sandwiches that my mother had prepared.

Everything tasted delicious. While we had our lunch, I

shared with my family a funny incident that had

happened in school and we had a good laugh.

Soon, the sun began to set and it was time to Conclusion

head home. Before leaving, we threw our trash into a

rubbish bin so that the beach would be clean for

others. We were grateful for our day of fun in the sun

and thanked our parents for taking us to the beach.
