CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
Background of the Study
Knowledge of the world around us is a product of education in the modern day. A
worldview is formed, and the ability to form and articulate thoughts and perspectives is fostered.
Education is the means by which people learn about the environment, whereas knowledge is
something different as it equips people with the ability to perceive things right. Nowadays,
students, primarily those in college, are often inundated with responsibilities and expectations. In
addition to attending classes and studying for exams, many are also looking for part-time jobs or
internships to make up for shortfalls in various forms of student support, supplementing income
for a better educational experience, or contributing to long-term goals. This gives students a
sense of financial independence and helps them develop skills in budgeting and account
management while allowing them to contribute to meeting their educational costs.
According to (Burgos et al., 2020), many less fortunate young adults are bound to keep
working while pursuing their education. While education is essential as it is the path for success,
not all parents have the finances required to send their children to school and help them
financially. As a result, some students must become working students to support themselves.
Working student is defined as someone who is working while studying. Student assistant is
considered one and is typically responsible for tasks such as monitoring classrooms, helping with
event set-up, or providing administrative support. A position in which a variety of clerical tasks
are performed to maintain departmental operations.
Concerning the first information, this study will primarily focus on gaining a broader
knowledge about the lived experiences of student assistants, whether the student is in a low
socioeconomic level or a high one at the Technological University of the Philippines - Visayas.
Statement of the Problem
This study aimed to identify the lived experiences of student assistants at the
Technological University of the Philippines - Visayas.
Specifically, this study seeks to answer the following questions:
1. Why do students in Technological University of the Philippines - Visayas apply as
student assistants?
2. How long have these students been student assistants in Technological University of the
Philippines- Visayas?
3. How much are their salaries working as student assistants in Technological University of
the Philippines - Visayas?
4. What are the advantages and disadvantages in being a student assistant in Technological
University of the Philippines - Visayas?
5. What are the strategies they use in balancing their studies while working as student
assistants in Technological University of the Philippines - Visayas?
Objectives of the Study
This qualitative research study has six (6) main objectives. These are the following:
● To determine why TUP-V students decided to become student assistants.
● To ascertain the difficulties that TUP-V student assistants face while working and studying.
● To identify the effects of TUPV student assistants on academics while working.
● To determine the advantages of working as a student assistant at TUP-V.
● To identify the disadvantages of working as a student assistant at TUP-V.
● To ascertain the strategies TUPV-students assistants use in balancing work while studying.
Hypothesis
The researchers proposed two hypotheses in this research. The Null Hypothesis (H0) and
Alternative Hypothesis (H1).
H1: There are lived experiences of student assistants in Technological University of the
Philippines –Visayas in terms of their academic performance.
H0: There are no lived experiences of student assistants in Technological University of
the Philippines – Visayas in terms of their academic performance.
Significance of the Study
The result of the study will be beneficial to the following:
Student Assistants. This study would help students who study full-time and work
part-time on campus.
Teachers. This result of the study would be helpful for teachers being knowledgeable of
the experiences of the student assistants. This could help them devise strategies and methods to
further improve the way of learning for students.
Parents. This could provide insight on how their children cope with studying and
working at the same time and how the school provides their children with education.
Commission on Higher Education. The result of the study would provide insights on
the students in terms of studying and working at the same time and how it affects them. CHED
could use this information and work to develop new and innovative ways in learning.
Future Researchers. The results of this study will be a useful basis for future researchers
who plan on making a related study with different variables.
Scope and Limitations
The main objective of this study is to explore and describe the experiences of a student
assistant in Technological University of the Philippines – Visayas.
The study will solely focus on the lived experiences of student assistants here in
Technological University of the Philippines – Visayas. Twelve (12), 6 males and 6 females

of the Philippines - Visayas however, this study will give ideas and conclusions regarding the
Lived Experiences of Students Assistants in Technological University of thePhilippines –
Visayas. In addition, by using approved survey instruments, we are collecting the data needed
through Google forms.
This study will not focus on the personal background of the respondents. Also, this study
