Prelim Test

This document contains 7 multiple choice questions that test statistical concepts such as hypothesis testing, z-tests, and comparing means and variances. The questions provide sample data and ask test criteria such as alpha levels to determine if claims can be supported or refuted.

Advance Statistics

1. The FCC conducts broadband speed tests to measure how much data per second passes
between a consumer’s computer and the internet. As of August of 2022, the standard
deviation of Internet speeds across Internet Service Providers (ISPs) was 21.32 percent.
Suppose a sample of 32 ISPs is taken, and the standard deviation is 23.52. An analyst claims
that the standard deviation of speeds is more than what was reported. Using α =0.1
perform a five-step traditional hypothesis testing method to prove the claim.

2. A cereal company claims that their boxes of cereal weigh 15 ounces with a standard
deviation of at most 0.50 ounces. Customers were complaining that this was not the case.
The company needed to determine if the filling machine needed to be recalibrated. They
took a sample of 84 boxes and determined that the standard deviation of their sample was
0.54. Does the machine need to be recalibrated? Use α =0.05 and a five-step p-value method
to test the claim.

3. What are our assumptions and when are we to use a z-test when testing hypotheses
involving difference between means?

4. The Mid-Year Assessment (MYA) were given to all public school students of DepEd Region
III at the end of the first semester of the school year. For the validation of the Mathematics
9 MYA, the test was fielded to 1000 Grade 10 students. The regional mean is 27.25. The
scores of 100 randomly selected students from Tarlac Province were given below. If the
regional standard deviation for the Mathematics 9 MYA is 3.74 and the provincial standard
deviation is 4.88, can we conclude that Tarlac Province is above the regional average? Use
α =0.05 and a 5-step traditional hypothesis testing method to test the claim.

5. A researcher claims that students in a private school and public schools have the same
exam mean scores. Random samples of 75 students from each type of school are selected
and given the same test. The results are shown below. Test the claim using the p-value
method and α =0.05 .

Private School Public School

Mean 92 87
Standard Deviation 12 12

6. Two judges in a beauty contest rated 25 contestants. The first judge’s scores have a
variance of 62.3 while the second judge have a variance of 87.9. A contestant filed a
complaint that the first judge’s scoring has a lower variance compared to the second judge.
a. Is it necessary for the judges to have, at most, the same variances in their scoring? Why
or why not?
b. Use α =0.1 and a traditional hypothesis testing method to support or refute the
contestant’s claim.

7. According to a researcher there is a significant difference between the variation of the

amount of time (in hours) an 18-year old male and female spends online. He surveyed 52
males and 55 females and the results are as follow: the male’s standard deviation is 0.35
hours while the female is 0.42. Using α =0.05 and the p-value hypothesis testing method, is
there enough evidence to support the claim?
