CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The comfort room, or restroom, is a crucial space in any educational

institution. It is important to ensure that the comfort room is properly

maintained, clean and functional for the safety and health of students and

teachers. This includes regular cleaning, stocking of essential supplies, and

ensuring that any repairs or maintenance needs are addressed promptly.

Proper maintenance of the school comfort room is crucial to the overall

well-being and comfort of everyone in the school community. The comfort room,

also known as the bathroom, is an essential part of any school. However, it is

often overlooked when it comes to maintenance. School comfort rooms that are

not properly maintained can pose health risks to students and staff.

Maintaining a clean and functional comfort room is essential in any school

setting. Not only does it promote good hygiene practices, but it also helps create

a comfortable and safe environment for students and staff. The first step in

maintaining a school comfort room is regular cleaning. Comfort rooms should be

cleaned at least once a day, or more frequently if necessary.

This includes wiping down surfaces, mopping the floors, and restocking

supplies such as toilet paper, soap, and paper towels. Regular cleaning helps

prevent the buildup of germs and bacteria that can cause illnesses. Proper waste

disposal is also important in maintaining a clean comfort room. Make sure that

there are enough trash bins available in the comfort room and that they are

emptied regularly.

This helps prevent the buildup of waste and unpleasant odors. In addition

to regular cleaning and waste disposal, it's important to check for leaks in the

faucets, toilets, and pipes. Leaks not only waste water but can also cause

damage to the comfort room's structure if left unattended.

Regular checks for leaks can help prevent costly repairs down the line. If

there are any damages to the comfort room such as broken tiles or damaged

fixtures, make sure to have them repaired as soon as possible. This helps

prevent accidents and ensures that the comfort room remains functional.

It's also important to promote good hygiene practices among students and

staff by encouraging them to wash their hands properly after using the comfort

room. Providing posters or reminders can help promote these practices.

Maintaining a clean and functional school comfort room is essential in promoting

good hygiene practices and creating a comfortable and safe environment for

students and staff. By following these tips on regular cleaning, proper waste

disposal, leak checks, repairs, and promoting good hygiene practices, schools
can ensure that their comfort rooms remain clean, functional, and safe for

everyone who uses them.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study generally aimed to determine the Issues experience by Senior

High School Learners towards Comfort rooms maintenance.

Specifically, this study seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What are the Issues experience by Participant in maintenance Senior High

School comfort rooms?

2. What suggested Actions can be recommended by participant to Improve

comfort room maintenance?

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

This study focused on the Issues experience of Senior High School

Students in Bacnotan National High School in maintaining comfort rooms.

This is study was delimited to senior high school students of Bacnotan

National High School who are experiencing issues towards comfort room

maintenance.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The result of the study will be beneficial to the following:

Senior High School Advisers. The result of this study can provide then new

strategy on helping students to maintain the comfort rooms.

Senior High School Students. This study can help the Senior High School

students to gain more knowledge on how to maintain the activities on maintaining

comfort rooms and avoid the issue.

Future Researchers. The result of this study could be a basis for their future

research about maintaining comfort rooms.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

To show the clear understanding of the study, the following terms were

operationally defined:

Comfort rooms: It refers a bathroom fixture consisting of a bowl, usu.

with a hinged seat and lid, and a device for flushing with water, used for

defecation and urination.

Maintenance: It refers the process of maintaining or preserving someone

or something, or the state of being maintained.

CHAPTER II

METHODOLOGY

RESEARCH DESIGN

This study will be using Phenomenological research design.

Phenomenological approach is to illuminate the specific, to identify phenomena

through how they are perceived by the actors in a situation. In the human sphere

this normally translates into gathering ‘deep’ information and perceptions through

inductive, qualitative methods such as interviews, discussions and participant

observation, and representing it from the perspective of the research

participant(s). Phenomenology is concerned with the study of experience from

the perspective of the individual, ‘bracketing’ taken-for-granted assumptions and

usual ways of perceiving. Phenomenological approaches are based in a

paradigm of personal knowledge and subjectivity, and emphasize the importance

of personal perspective and interpretation. As such they are powerful for

understanding subjective experience, gaining insights into people’s motivations

and actions, and cutting through the clutter of taken-for-granted assumptions and

conventional wisdom.

Phenomenological research has overlaps with other essentially qualitative

approaches including ethnography, hermeneutics and symbolic interactionism.

Pure phenomenological research seeks essentially to describe rather than

explain, and to start from a perspective free from hypotheses or preconceptions

(Husserl 1970). More recent humanist and feminist researchers refute the

possibility of starting without preconceptions or bias, and emphasize the

importance of making clear how interpretations and meanings have been placed

on findings, as well as making the researcher visible in the ‘frame’ of the

research as an interested and subjective actor rather than a detached and

impartial observer (e.g. see Plummer 1983, Stanley & Wise 1993).

Phenomenological methods are particularly effective at bringing to the fore

the experiences and perceptions of individuals from their own perspectives, and

therefore at challenging structural or normative assumptions. Adding an

interpretive dimension to phenomenological research, enabling it to be used as

the basis for practical theory, allows it to inform, support or challenge policy and

action.

POPULATION AND LOCALE OF THE STUDY

This study is based on a Quota sampling technique, because the target

population is already known by the researchers. The participants will be the

Senior High School students who are assigned to supervise the comfort rooms.

The researchers will conduct their study in Bacnotan National High School

Senior High School Building, one of the public school located in Poblacion,

Bacnotan, La Union.

INSTRUMENTATION AND DATA COLLECTION

Data will be collected through unstructured interviews. Which will be

conducted face to face. As part of study, the participants will be asked questions

about the issues they experience in maintaining the cleanliness of comfort rooms

and their suggested actions to improve the comfort room maintenance

DATA ANALYSIS

After collecting data through face to face interviews, the data will be

documented, analyzed and interpreted. The process or research is systematically

searching and arranging the interview transcripts, observation notes, or other

non-textual materials that researcher accumulates to increase the understanding

of the phenomenon.

Moreover, the process of analyzing qualitative date predominantly involves sub

themes and thematic statements and themes followed by identifying significant

patterns, and finally drawing meaning from data and subsequently building a

logical chain of evidence.

VALIDATION

The interview sheet prepared by the researchers will be validated first by

the research teachers followed by incorporating the suggestions or

recommendations .

After validating the tool, the researchers will now conduct the research

study through sort of interviews towards the chosen participants.
