Looking Back to your Lesson!

From your Grade 8 Geometry, you learned congruent polygons. If two polygons are
congruent, then all pairs of corresponding angles are congruent, and all pairs of
corresponding sides are equal. Moreover, you learned postulates and theorem for the
congruence of two triangles: SAS Congruence Postulate, ASA Congruence Postulate, SSS
Congruence Postulate, and AAS Congruence Theorem.

From your previous lesson, you have learned proportion which means equality
between two ratios. Let us recall one of the fundamental laws which is the product of the
means is equal to the product of extremes.

Solve for the value of the value of x in each proportion.

Introduction of the Topic:

Lesson 1: Similar Polygons

If two polygons are similar, then their corresponding angles are congruent, and their
corresponding sides are proportional. Consider the figure below.

F G The corresponding angles are ∠𝐴 ≙ ∠𝐸, ∠𝐵 ≙ ∠𝐹,

B C
∠𝐶 ≙ ∠𝐺, and ∠𝐷 ≙ ∠𝐻. Also, the corresponding
sides are 𝐴𝐵 ≙ 𝐸𝐹, 𝐵𝐶 ≙ 𝐹𝐺, 𝐶𝐷 ≙ 𝐺𝐻, and 𝐴𝐷 ≙ 𝐸𝐻.
A D E H

If quadrilaterals ABCD and EFGH are similar, then ∠𝐴 ≅ ∠𝐸, ∠𝐵 ≅ ∠𝐹, ∠𝐶 ≅ ∠𝐺, ∠𝐷 ≅
𝐴𝐵 𝐵𝐶 𝐶𝐷 𝐴𝐷
∠𝐻, and = 𝐹𝐺 = 𝐺𝐻 = 𝐸𝐻.
𝐸𝐹

The ratio of corresponding sides of ABCD and EFGH are equal. The ratio is called the
scale factor or ratio of similitude.
Note: The symbol ~ means similar to.
The symbol ≅ means congruent to.
The symbol ≙ means corresponds to
Examples:
1. Determine whether the quadrilaterals 𝐵𝐴𝑆𝐸 and 𝐶𝑈𝑇𝑌 are similar. If they are similar, write
a similarity statement and find the scale factor of quadrilateral 𝐵𝐴𝑆𝐸 to quadrilateral 𝐶𝑈𝑇𝑌.

2
Mathematics 9 Quarter 3 Week 6
Solution:

∠𝐵 ≅ ∠𝐶, ∠𝐴 ≅ ∠𝑈, ∠𝑆 ≅ ∠𝑇, and ∠𝐸 ≅ ∠𝑌. Hence, corresponding angles are congruent.

𝐴𝐵 4 2 𝐴𝑆 14 2 𝑆𝐸 6 2 𝐵𝐸 12 2
= 10 = 5, = 35 = 5, = 15 = 5, and = 30 = 5. The scale factor is 𝟐: 𝟓.
𝐶𝑈 𝑇𝑈 𝑇𝑌 𝐶𝑌

𝐴𝐵 𝐴𝑆 𝑆𝐸 𝐵𝐸
Corresponding sides are proportional, = 𝑇𝑈 = 𝑇𝑌 = . Thus, ▱ 𝐵𝐴𝑆𝐸 ~ ▱ 𝐶𝑈𝑇𝑌 by the
𝐶𝑈 𝐶𝑌

definition of similar polygons.

2. In the figure ▱𝐴𝐵𝐶𝐷 ~ ▱𝐸𝐹𝐺𝐻. What is the perimeter of ▱ 𝐸𝐹𝐺𝐻?

F G
B C
4 6

A 10 D
E x H
BA AD
Solution: Since, ▱𝐴𝐵𝐶𝐷 ~▱ 𝐸𝐹𝐺𝐻, we have FE
= 𝐸𝐻
4 10
=
6 𝑥
4𝑥 = 60 Product of means and extremes are equal.
𝑥 = 15 Divide 4 from both sides.

𝐸𝐹 = 𝐺𝐻 and 𝐸𝐻 = 𝐹𝐺 By definition of rectangle.

𝑃𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝑜𝑓 𝐸𝐹𝐺𝐻 = 6 + 6 + 15 + 15 = 𝟒𝟐 units.

Thus, perimeter of ▱𝐸𝐹𝐺𝐻 is 42 units.
