Personal Project - Angolan Traditional recipes - A simple cookbook or a cookbook for beginners

Criterion Ai: My learning Goal

I always enjoyed eating and of course that comes with cooking and so I usually cooked simple
foods, just cooking a steak in a pan, with some caramelized onions and rice, but slowly I started to
explore making more intricate dishes, such as cognac steak, but my favorite foods were the
Angolan traditional dishes my grandma made which I never managed to make. Angola is a very
diverse country with different people and a very rich culture that intermixes to create new dishes,
but also gives a wide variety of options when you want to eat. However, there are some plates that
are eaten all around the country such as feijão de óleo de palma. I had never done any Angolan
dishes previous to this experience and only knew how they looked, tasted and had a vague
perception of how to make some of the dishes which I saw my grandma make. I never made them
because they usually take a long time to make having to use the pressure cooker for long spans of
time, which is not my style, I like to cook for now not for 3 hours later.

I always loved Angola, I love the atmosphere and the people. There is nothing missing here there
are deserts, swamps, rain forests, and savannas, it's an all-in-one package, and that also applies
to the people, and learning the culture comes with the food. Food connects the family, and you go
to your grandma to eat with them every weekend. My family comes mostly from the middle and so
our food varies from people from the north to people from the south. The different variations
change the ingredients used or the way that the food is made a example is the fish soup made in
the middle of the country compared to the north, in the middle the fish stays in the food, and oil
palm oil is used, while in the north there is no oil palm and the soup is stained to only keep the
liquid and served with fish steak.

Hence, for my personal project, I chose to make a cookbook that teaches about how to make
Angolan traditional dishes, with my learning goal to learn how to make a cookbook that is
interesting and easy to follow. I chose this because I am able to evolve my cooking skills and also
learn about my culture. This would also give me the opportunity to learn about the different dishes
made in Angola that I never knew about. My goal with this project would be to help foreigners
living in Angola to cook traditional food with local ingredients. This product would help me achieve
my learning goal because it would force me to make a cookbook and learn how to make it
understandable, and interesting.

The global context I want to explore is personal and cultural expression, this is because I would be
looking at my culture through a culinary perspective and then writing about it, which would be a
form of expression. This is not the only global context that would fit the role, I could also my
identities and relations, because I would spend time with my relations to explore the different
recipes. The ATL skills I would need would be informational literacy because I would have to
interact with different forms of information to write my book not only online but person to person to
a variety of different people, I would also be needing language skills due to me having to translate
the information that my sources give me in Portuguese to English efficiently. The research that I
would have to conduct would be going to different people and asking them to cook a traditional
dish and then making it with them and taking images so that the book is easier to follow, after
writing captions for each image.

Criterion Aii) Intended Product:

My product is a cookbook that portrays food that contains selected traditional Angolan dishes, I
wished that this book contained images of the food process because it would make it easier to
understand, this is because the food differs a lot from the rest of the world and so people might be
confused. The prior knowledge that I know comes from design, humanities, and my language
classes, design because we usually have to make products and show step by step how it was
made, something I did with my book, and humanities because of the investigation skills that I have
learned and can now use to find information on the different dishes. I used my language classes to
write the instructions because I need to use language to make understandable and well-made
instructions and introductions. My main research will come from my grandma because she has
been cooking for a long time and so has all the recipes that I will need to record into a book and
then cook.

I want the product to contain 5 different categories, which would be organized as, drinks,
snacks/starters, main palates, deserts, and side plates. These categories would all be authentic
Angolan food and use Angolan products. I would like to also add little notes for every recipe that
gives a story, for example how the food is Angolan, what it is eaten with, and when it is eaten. The
book would not focus specifically on my family and would have a couple of recipes from different
cultures throughout Angola. The book would contain images for each of the instructions and a final
image to portray how the food should look. I would hope that these images would help the
common person living in Angola understand how to cook what I teach in my cooking.

Criteria Aiii) Planning and Product success criteria:

To make my product success criteria I will make goals that are achievable but that I will still need
to work hard to achieve. I will take inspiration from the design course and base my specification on
categories. I then chose 4 success topics that I believed will encapsulate the specifications I need
to make to create a great cookbook. The following are aesthetics, target audience, function, and
ingredients. I decided to then analyze 2 different cookbooks to see how they utilized aesthetics,
function, and ingredients to improve the quality of the book. I then thought about my target
audience of foreigners working in Angola and brainstormed how they would approach the book
and how they would make the book without someone's assistance and how I could help them
utilize the book better. I chose aesthetics because my book has to be aesthetically appealing to
convince potential buyers to buy and so when they look at the book they get to feel like it is a
well-made product. Target audience because I got to make sure that my book is able to achieve
the needs of the desired audience. Ingredients because I have got to see which ingredients are
easy to get and which are harder. To test my success criteria, I will make three categories met,
partially met, and not met. Met means that the test was completed successfully. Partially met is
that it was not completely met but part of the specification was met. Not met means I haven't met
the specifications at all. I settled on making around two specifications for each topic and also
writing how I would test them on the table to make it easier for my future self to test my
specifications. With all that said this is the table portraying my specifications:

Table 1. Success Criteria

Criteria Aiii) Plan

This is a very important assessment and so time management was key to finishing the product in
time. With that being said I will need to make sure that I make a coherent plan that illustrates well
how I will spend my time each week having its plan (Table 2). However, I will separate the time into
different topics as I have learned in humanities where we usually separate the time into research
and then writing. I will adapt this and separate my time into research, doing the recipes, and then
formulating the book. The research time will be allocated from week 1 to week 4 and I will be
researching how to write an engaging cookbook and a couple of recipes. I will complete the
recipes from week 5 to 10 and in this art, I'll just cook the different recipes and take pictures and
annotate changes or ideas along the way. I will place the recipes into a book format from weeks 10
to 11. This is just obtaining the recipes and placing them in a book-style format along with the
images. I will also take into account the assessments that I will have with me having less work on
assessment weeks. I would have to account for the cooking of the food which I can only make one
or two a day to not waste food. I also plan to add a reflection for each week so that I can make it
easier to write the report on criteria C.
I decided that for the research I should focus on learning how to make a cookbook appealing and
a great experience for my audience, but still, I needed to find out a couple of recipes so that I could
understand a bit about how Angolan dishes are made, I could also conduct a survey to see if what
I am planning to make is a need in the community. To find out how to make a great cookbook a
great source should be the internet as I could see how professional cookbook writers have done it,
I could also analyze a cookbook myself so I could see the different techniques when they are
actively being used. To find a couple of recipes I could go to my grandmother since she has been
cooking traditional recipes for a long time.

When conducting my recipes I want to go to a restaurant or go to my grandma's house so that I

could cook with a professional which would help make the recipes professional and well made
which would help create higher quality recipes. Going to a restaurant would not be a bad idea
because most Angolans know how to cook at least one type of traditional dish and so I could go
and cook, not only because the people aren't from my family they might have recipes that I
wouldn't usually eat or know about.

When making the book I had to search good software because I didn't know where I wouldl make
my book. I plan to organize my book by the different types of plates which I have stated before,
drinks, snacks/starters, main plates, desserts, and side plates. I plan to add the ingredients in a
small story and then the images with captions giving instructions on how to make the recipe.

Criterion B) Applying ATL skills on Learning Goal & Product:

i: explain how the ATL skill(s) was/were applied to help achieve their learning goal

To make this product I first had to set a learning goal. Initially, I didnt know what to do but I soon
decided I wanted to do something related to food (explained in Ai). I soon settled for teaching
others about Angolan cuisine. And so I chose my learning goal: To learn how to make a cookbook
that is interesting and easy to follow. So then I started to work, I then started to work, utilizing all of
my ATL skills, but the most important were my research skills, organizational skills, and
creative thinking skills.

I used my organizations skills extensively throughout this unit to achieve my learning goal. To be
able to complete this task I needed to organize my research plan so that I could know what steps
to take. I then decided to organize my research plan by having different topics of what I needed to
know, and so settled on recipes, how to write, cooking skill, and need of community. I then
developed this more by writing at least 1 question for each topic, then I would specify if the source
was primary or secondary, why I need to know the information, the website I would gather the
information; then the priority from high to low, and the date that I would have the question
answered. For recipes I just learned some basic recipes that I could include to start my book

Table 4: My research plan showing my organization skills

before I started more complicated dishes (Table
4). The topic of how to write was for me to learn
more specifically how to write a cookbook that
engages the reader, I learned this because I
have never done a cookbook before and so I
need to know the basics. The basic cooking
skills where just the safety that I needed to know
before I started such as how to cut with a kitchen
knife. The last topic was conducting a survey to
identify a need in the community where I made
my survey this helped me find a reason to make
my personal project.

As someone who has never written a cookbook I

could start I had to research how to make a
cookbook. Therefore, I had to utilize both my
research skills to explore cookbooks, to research
cookbooks. I utilized my information literacy by analyzing two cookbooks, and several other
sources. The 2 cookbooks I analysed were of angolan cuisine and I was able to use basic
annotations. I concluded that the book was not exact witht he same issue as the spoken tradition,
in which there are no messurents and only visual cues. I analyzed several different sources that
explained how to write a cookbook, usually from former writers which helped me form an idea of
how to make a cookbook. I was then able to conclude that my book to be great, had to be
personal, that would make the audience be more interested in my book. I learned how to
effectively organize my cookbook, making it comprehensible and enjoyable for the reader (Figure
4).The media literacy skills were used throughout the process as I used MISO. Which is a way to
use different forms of information. M is media wich includes books, websites, databases, and
others… I is interview which is gathering information via an interview. S is a survey which is
gathering information through a survey. O is observations which is just observing what's around
you and annotating. This method will help you collect more accurate information. I was able to use
three of the MISO letters throughout my project showing the ability to interact with different forms
of literacy. I used M by doing research via websites (table 4), in which I researched the basic data
I needed to know about how to create a book that is engaging. I used I by interviewing my
grandma about the different plates, I can’t show evidence because it was recorded, but by looking
at the recipes you can see indirect correlation as the recipes I used were the ones that she taught
me. This gave me a good start into what I had to do for the project as I heard how to make the
food. I utilized the survey method (S) to gauge community interest in my product. Which I
concluded that there was as most people knew little about the angolan food. I did not use O as it
was not very applicable to this project.

skills, and informational skills

Source 3:How to Write a Cookbook (with Pictures) - wikiHow

Key Ideas: Notes:

● Basics ● Focus on a theme to do
● Decide on how to make your book stand apart from others
● Decide what audience you want
● Decide the style of book you want
○ Shows how family is incorporated in dishes
● Make a list of how many recipes you want to include for each type of
dish
● Get recipes and write down as you cook and add tips that you found
useful

Summary:
Shows us a basic view of how to make a cookbook giving simple tips that are useful to start.

I had to use my creative thinking skills when achieving my learning goal. This is because
throughout the research I discovered that to make a cookbook, I need to create a theme, therfore I
chose to do a personal theme since the traditional culture is something personal to me. Due to
this, I had to create a cookbook that had my touch, my layout, so when part of learning to write a
cookbook I had to know how to make a layout. The layout is a crucial part of a cookbook. With a
confusing layout your audience is not able to understand the steps needed to achieve the dish.
Furthermore, I had to then use my creative thinking skills to come up with a creative way to portray
the instructions, with the images. I settled by having instructions at the bottom of each image, the
title at the top of the page, the introduction below the title at the left, and the ingredients to the right
of the introduction. This assured that the images of the process were all included and that the
written instructions were visible. The title was the first thing you saw, followed by the introduction
since you read left to right and then the introduction. And so I had to use my creative thinking
skills to learn how to make a layout of a cookbook (figure 1).

In conclusion, I employed different ATL skills to plan, research, and practice, how to create a
cookbook which then taught me my learning goal. The plan used my organizational skills and
helped me use my time efficiently so that I could learn how to make a cookbook. Then came both
my research skills, as I used 1 to analyze media and gain important information on how to create a
cookbook, and sued the other skill to make my research more trustworthy as I used MISO to use a
variety of different information sources. Then finally I used my creative thinking skills to use what I
had learned to test to see if I had really achieved my learning goal.

ii: explain how the ATL skill(s) was/were applied to help achieve their product

To be able to achieve my product goals I had to use a variety of ATL skills. Since this is such a
large topic to undertake and so much effort and time. I had to be able to use a large array of ATL
skills to be able to complete my project. The skills that I will focus on are the most important.
However, throughout the creation process, I used almost all of my ATL skills. The first one was my
transfer skills more specifically I used my skills from both language classes, humanities, and
design. Then I had to use both my communication skills. And finally my creative thinking skills.

The transfer skills that I used came from my language classes (English and Portuguese),
humanities, and design class. From my language class of English I have been able to use my
skills of writing. This is because we practice how to write engaging and entertaining text, that is
able to hook an audience. As a result, I have been able to use that skill when writing my cookbook,
especially when adding the introductions for each recipe. For my language class of portuguese I
have transferred the understanding skill. This is because I have been able to use the vocabulary
given to me in Portuguese, to find synonyms of words to then translate to English so the text made
sense. An example of this is words in Portuguese, that are used in a way that is not translatable, to
english and so I had to find synonyms or rephrase the sentence so that I could then translate. For
my humanities class I have been able to transfer the action plan, and how to research. This is due
to the fact that we often use these two skills when completing an assignment. We are required to
create an action plan of how you to achieve your research question and then we have to conduct
research in different forms such as cornel notes, mind map, outline method, and etc… I was able
to use my cornel notes scheme as it is the one I like the most, finding it the most practical this can
be seen in my research (Table 3). An example of my action plan creation is table 2. I used prior
knowledge from design, to go throught the process of creating a product, this includes making a
success criteria, and testing my product. Throughout the process I have noticed a wide range of
similarities between making the product and the criteria we do in design class. This is first we have
to find a need, then research, after planning how to make the product and finally, making the
product and reflecting. The primary skill I utilized in the process was making the success criteria
and testing them. In Design Criteria B, after the research, we also usually have to create
specifications which are exact boundaries for our product. I used this process to make my own
success criteria (Table 1). So I used the design template to create my own success criteria
showing transfer from design to my personal project. I transferred my testing skills, In design we
test our specifications at the end of the process and same in personal project so I also transferred
my skills by using the template demonstrating my transfer skills (table 4).

Table 3: Shows one of the cornel notes that I conducted and shows reaserch skills and transfer
skills.
Source 1:8 Tips For Writing a Cookbook

Key Ideas: Notes:

● Simple tips ● Have a table of contents
○ These should separate meal types
■ Breakfast
■ Lunch
■ Dinner
■ Etc…
○ Types of ingredients
● Include tags such as
○ Gluten free
○ Vegan
○ Vegetarian
○ Etc…
● Cook every recipe I write to see if it works, try to follow word by
word to make sure the recipes work
○ Put ingredients in order of which you use first, so the recipe
is easier to follow
● Try to standardize measurements
Summary:
In this source we can see a use of different small tips that are used for helping when making a cookbook.
We can also see ways to make our book look more professional and also look more followable.

I used both my communication skills throughout my process, which are my interaction, and
language skills. I used my interactions when I was collecting information from interviews. I used
this skills when I was gathering the food recipes. This is because Angolan food is not well
documented with people usually passing down recipes by family members, in addition the recipes
don’t have measurements. An example is my grandma
telling me that I needed to add a ingredient until the top of
the pan was covered. So because of these issues I had to
collect my own primary information and cook with my
teacher so that I could measure as they went along. This
shows how I had to interact with others, mostly listening
and taking notes. I used my language skills in different
situations, but the most relevant were when I made my
instructions, and when translating. I used language to make
my instructions because I had to make understandable
instruction which use my langage skills, since I had to
communicate efficiently. I used my skills to translate
because I collected all my information in portuguese, while
my target audience were english speaking foreigners,
because portuguese speaking foreigners can speak to
locals and learn however english speaking foreigners are
left disconnected from the cusine. So to make my book I
had to translate what I collected in relevant and easy to
read information in english showing the use of my language
skills in english and Portuguese (figure 1).
Figure 1: This image depicts a page from my cookbook showing the language skills.

I used my creative thinking skills when creating the product. I used my creative thinking skills
because I had to find out a layout that would fit my book. At the begging of my product journey I
did not think much about the layout and so did not research it, I soon came to realize that this was
a grave mistake as when it came time to start to turn in the product I did not know where to place
it. I then started to look for different software and I started working on one but it was not great and
looked ugly. It was then that I found pages that solved my problem as it was perfect for making my
book which I soon got to work on. Since I had early decided that I wanted to have an image for
every instruction I decided to have ingredients and an introduction at the top and then a photo with
a caption giving the instructions which I believe to be the most comprehensible way and easy-to
follow. It shows creative thinking because I had to create a way to lay out my work
(figure 1).
In conclusion, I used my skills to achieve my product by first researching, then writing, and
creatively making a unique layout. I used my transfer skills to research and find out how to start
the project, then extensively researched traditional Angolan recipes, ingredients, and cooking
techniques to gather the necessary information for my cookbook. I then wrote down all the recipes
and translated them from Portuguese to English. Then finally I used my creative thinking skills to
create the cookbook in a unique manner that was easy to understand. The result was a beautifully
crafted cookbook that celebrated the rich flavors and cultural heritage of Angolan cuisine.

Criterion C ii) Impact of product on myself and my learning

The first impact that the project had on me was how to meet deadlines and stay organized
throughout the process. Early on when I started I knew that I needed to stay on task and complete
the objectives I set for myself. However, I didn't realize that not completing my deadlines would
have any repercussions because usually tasks that are given to me are short and if I don't do it it’s
not a huge deal I do it tomorrow. I soon came to find out how important they were as in the first
weeks I didn't do almost any work resulting in me having to push work to the next week, making
each passing week snowball. I then had to reorganize the schedule which helped me learn how to
organize my time. Another issue with the deadlines was the often interruption of school and other
activities, these were the assessments and basketball practice where I would often have to forget
about the personal project to work on. This was majority my fault as I should have taken into
account how I would have assessments and work to do around that time period and have
accounted into my plan. These other works however caused me to usually lose 4 weeks where I
did nothing. All these distractions made it so that most of the work I did was over the
December/January break when I had the most time to go to restaurants and my grandma's house
and where I completed most of the product. This skill I learned would fall into the affective and
organizational skills, I developed my affective skills by being able to focus on work more efficiently
which is shown throughout the weekly reflections where I can complete my work always on time,
and organizational skills as I am now able to plan independently and plan more efficiently for the
future. All of these factors made it so that I learned in the end to always think ahead and
remember to plan for the future and not the present, so if I know that I will have assessments
during a certain area of time I have to try and plan to have less work throughout that area so that
the work is realistic and doable.

Another important lesson that I learned from this project is how little information there is on
Angolan cuisine online and in books. This was because when I started the project I tried to find the
different dishes that I needed online, however, I came to find out there were no relevant sources,
with recipes missing measurements or a detailed description of how to make them. This
experience with not finding authentic recipes made me question my informational skills as I had to
test with the OPCVL technique to see if the sources, which I would find to be untrustworthy, were
usable. This then gave me a realization that not many foreigners with no family ties to Angola
knew much about the cuisine and culture because unless your mom or family members cooked
you the traditional dishes you wouldn't get the authentic dishes and not know about the county you
live in. I believe that this is a problem because when you go to live in a different country you
should understand and respect their customs and cuisine is part of the culture and an important
part of a country's people. As a result, I have now been motivated to share a bit of the culture by
trying to promote my book and spread it around, especially to foreigners living in Angola.

I also learned to be more comfortable when making a project without a template. When in school
you usually get a template of what you have to fill out which builds a comfort zone where you
never have to plan much. This was placed to the test during a personal project where I had to
create my template and a plan for myself, something that I had previously never done for such a
long-term project. I had created plans for humanities where I had to plan out in a given time frame,
however, they were always very small only detailing how to achieve the assessment in a week or
two. And so mE creating such a big plan spanning up to 3 months was a big shock. I took away
from this experience that to do large tasks in large spans of time you have to separate them into
smaller times, so I made it so the plan was weekly. I also learned that if you want to improve week
by week you have to do a reflection every week detailing what skills you used appropriately and
which ones you could improve on or start to use. This makes it so that you can know what you can
do every week to improve your work.

Another lesson that I garnered in my time doing the personal project was how to make an
entertaining cookbook that still passed the message of how to cook food efficiently and in an
understandable manner. So when I started to work on my product I didn't worry about how the
cookbook would look or the mood that it would pass on. During my research, I found out that to
make an interesting and easy-to-follow cookbook I have to tell a story, and try to convey a mood
such as familiarity, culture, or even healthiness and I decided that for my book I would try to make
a family mood where I would show a comfortable book to read. As a result, I decided that for every
recipe I would add a small history of when it was eaten, with whom, and with what, these all gave
a little backstory to the dish, however, I did not add many stories to the instructions because I
didn't want to hinder the ease to follow the recipe. All of these helped me learn that to make an
interesting book you have to be able to create a story no matter what kind of book it is because
when people look for an interesting book they want a story to read.

The final impact that this project had on me was strengthening my reflection skills, which
strengthened all my other ATL skills. This came from me making a timeline that included
reflections every week. Although this was a challenging thing to do because I am not the greatest
reflector I still forced myself to do it, as a result making me a better user of my reflection skills. I
decided to do weekly reflections because I thought it could be a summary of the week that I could
use later on to help me when I was writing my project report. In the first couple of weeks of
completing my plan, I just didn't do it because I didn't think it was that important but my reflections
were useful to help me refocus as I didn't do most of my work which caused me to be behind. So
the reflections helped me understand what was wrong and what I needed to change to keep on
track. We can then see how reflections in this assignment helped me change my courses of action
to work more effectively and use more of my time efficiently which helped improve the quality of
my journal not only but also helped me always reach my deadlines. I was then able to improve my
other ATL skills because through my reflections I was able to see how to improve the rest of my
ATL skills, an example of this is when I improved my affective skills by observing better ways to
keep on track and not get distracted which I settled on keeping classic music because it had to
lyrics or beat to keep me distracted but wasn't silent, I also say that not standing up until my goal
was achieved worked because it forced me to work until I was done. So this project was able to
teach me how to use my reflection skills in a way that helped me improve by boosting all my other
ATL skills.
Impact of Project on Community

After this whole process of finding recipes and making them and then creating the book I have
deduced that the book I have created has had the intended impact on my target audience. My
intended impact was to assist foreigners living in Angola to know the culinary world, and I believe
that I have been able to achieve this as the cookbook is able to convey a variety of different
recipes that I know are authentic to Angola. I was able to create a book that had all the different
topics I wanted it to have from drinks to side plates. I was also able to create a book that conveyed
a friendly mood and that was also able to be interesting, something that is shown through the
responses to my survey. An example of me being able to reach my target audience with the
desired effect was one of the people, who is also a foreigner, who I asked to feedback my book
said that there was not much feedback as it was an informative book that is able to also keep a
good mood throughout. Although the book has not been published I have shared it with plenty of
people who are my intended audience and so I believe I was able to share the culinary culture
very efficiently. Through my book foreigners have also been able to connect more with the Angolan
culture as they now understand a bit more about the culture that exists here. This is also shown in
the book which gives a bit of the angolan culture in each recipe introduction. The book might also
lead some people to take it back to their county and share it with others. There is not many
Angolan recipes that are shared, this is partly because non have been written much and it is
mostly passed from generation to generation by your parents, not only there are almost no
measurements used since most of the recipes are by eye, an example is the oil palm beans where
you are supposed to put two fingers of water above the beans and the oil palm is supposed to
cover the top of the water and those are the given instructions, and so by me writing the recipes I
was able to make the culinary more widespread and easier to access.

In conclusion, the book that I have created has most likely helped a foreigner living in Angolan, a
place rich with culture, understand a bit more about the culture by teaching them about the
culinary. Adding to this I have been able to immortalize the food as it is now not only dependent on
passing eyeballed recipes down the family. I also see now how I could have started a small book
where other nationals can join in and help add more recipes. This is because Angola is a big
county with a variety of cultures and dishes and so other families from different parts could add on
to the book and take recipes that they could use themselves.

Criterion C ii) Evaluation of product

When I first started to write my specifications I knew that I would use my transfer skills from design
to create them. I believe this because we did specifications for design consistently, and so alone
with that I also realized I would use my transfer skills to evaluate the product and so here is my

In conclusion I was able to achieve all the specifications that I aimed to do at the start of this
experience. I was able to achieve a creative cookbook idea that explored my culture and that also
helped me improve my learning goal of learning how to make a great cookbook which I have
accomplished according to my specifications which have all been checked off. I however believe
that some improvement for next time could be trying to have better grammatical use and maybe try
to get better quality images. But overall because the product was able to achieve all my
specifications I would have to say that this has a high degree of quality.
