Ws 24

This document provides a worksheet with problems involving first-order linear differential equations. It begins by revisiting solving the differential equation dy/dx = ky using the integrating factor technique. It then provides 6 problems to solve various first-order linear differential equations. Finally, it provides 6 initial value problems involving first-order linear differential equations to solve. The goal is to practice solving different types of first-order linear differential equations.

Worksheet #24: First order linear differential equations

1. In Section 11.5, you solved the differential equation

dy
= ky,
dx
where k is a constant, using the technique of separation of variables. However, this equation is a
first-order linear differential equation, so we can also use the integrating factor technique to solve this
equation. Do that. Hint: First rewrite the equation as
dy
− ky = 0.
dx

2. Solve the following differential equations. You may need to bust out your integration note card!
a) y 0 − 3y = ex
b) y 0 − 2xy = x
c) y 0 + y = sin(ex )
d) y 0 = x + 5y
e) y 0 + 4y = x
2
f) xy 0 + 2y = ex , x > 0
g) x2 y 0 + 2xy = cos x, x > 0

3. Solve the following initial value problems.

a) y 0 + (cos x)y = cos x, y(0) = 2
b) y 0 + y = x + ex , y(0) = 0
c) xy 0 = y + x3 sin x, x > 0, y(π) = 0
d) xy 0 − 3y = x2 , x > 0, y(1) = 0
2
e) y 0 − 2xy = 2xex , y(0) = 3

f) (1 + x2 )y 0 + 2xy = 3 x, y(0) = 2
