Tube Settler Design For MAP Stream: As Per Schiller Formula

The document summarizes the design of a tube settler for a MAP stream. Key calculations are shown to determine the number and dimensions of tubes needed based on the flow rate of 600 cubic meters per day. The design calls for 1444 square tubes of size 80x80mm arranged in a module that is 3.15m x 3.15m x 0.825m high to treat the flow.

Tube Settler Design for MAP Stream

As per Schiller Formula:

Lt = 0.0288 NRe . D ……………………….. 1
Where,
NRe = Reynolds’s number < 280
4S
D = Hydraulic diameter = = 0.08 m
P
S = cross-sectional area of the tube, m2 = 80 mm x 80 mm
P = wetted perimeter, m
d = depth of water in a tube, right angle to the direction of the flow, m

4S 4∗0.08∗0.08
D = = = 0.08 m
P 4∗0.08

For counter current flow:

V . Sc
Vs = Ls ………………… 2
sinθ + cosθ
d
Where,
Vs = Average velocity of flow through tubes, m3/m2. hr = U sinθ
U = Average upward velocity, m3/m2. Hr ( 2 -5 m3/m2/d), avg : 3.5 m3/m2/d
Sc = Shape coefficient for square = 1.38
L = Total length, m
Ls = Settling length, m = L - Lt
θ = Angle of inclination with horizontal
Lt = Transition length =0.0288 NRe D ,in m
Since initial concentration of solids is 0.4%, design flow is consider as liquid flow
DATA FOR DESIGN FOR θ = 55°
Flow, Q = 600 m3/day
Cross section of tube = 80 mm x 80 mm
Angle of inclination w.r.t horizontal plane, θ = 55°
Kinematic viscosity, μ = 1.01 x 10-6 m2/s
L =1m

CALCULATION:
Vs . D
NR = μ
Vs 0.08
=
1.01 x 10−6
= 22 V

Vs = U sinθ
= 3.5 * sin 55
= 2.87 m3/m2. hr

From equation 1 we get,

Ls = L - 0.0288 NR . D
= 1 – 0.0288 * 22 V * 0.08
= 1 – 0.05 V ………………………………… 3
Putting values of equation 3 in equation 2 we get,
V . Sc
Vs = L
sin θ+ s cos θ
d
1.38 V
2.87 =
0.8191+ 0.5739−0.0280 V
1.38 V
2.87 =
1.393−0.0286 V
3.998 – 0.0821 V = 1.38 V
1.462 V = 3.998
3.998
V= = 2.72 m3/m2. hr
1.462

Say V = 2.75 m3/m2. hr

Now,
Q
Tube entrance area, A =
V
= 600 / 66 = 9.1 m2

A
Number of tubes, N =
Lx B
= 9.1 / 0.08*0.08 = 1422

Provide 1444 tubes of size of 80 mm x 80 mm

Assuming 1.5 mm of tube thickness.
Length of tube module, L = No. of tubes * (Diameter of tubes + (2* thickness of tube))
= 38 * (0.08 + (2*0.0015))
= 3.15 m

Height of tube module for 1 m length of square tube at 55° = 1*sin55° = 0.8191
Say = 0.825 m

Therefore, overall dimension of tube module = 3.15 m x 3.15 m x 0.825 m ht +0.5 FB

Size of square tube 80 x 80 mm
Thickness of tube = 1.5 mm
