1.0 SCOPE

This procedure defines the criteria and general requirements to carry out liquid
penetrant examination on welded joints. This procedure is conforming to the
requirements of EN 571-1& EN1289.

2. PURPOSE:

To insure that liquid penetrant examination is used under control to examine

components and welds in accordance with EN standard 1289.
to detect discontinuities open to the surface

4.0 DEFINITIONS

The definition of this procedure as attached standard EN 1330

5.0 RESPONSIBILITIES

 The quality co-coordinator is responsible of the control of this procedure.

 The welding Inspector shall be responsible for conducting and reporting the results of
inspection in accordance with standard EN standard 1289.and the Client’s
specifications.

6.0 PROCEDUR

GENERAL

 This procedure covers liquid penetrant examination using water washable or solvent
removable colour contrast methods, in the temperature range from (10 oC to
50oC).

 Liquid penetrant examination is a method of NDE which provides for the detection of
discontinuities that are open to the surface of nonporous ferrous and nonferrous
materials.
 Typical surface discontinuities detectable by this method are : cracks , seams ,
laps, cold shuts, laminations , through leaks or lacks of fusion.

In principle, a liquid penetrant is applied to the surface to be examined and allowed

to enter discontinuities.
 All excess penetrant is then removed, the part is dried , and the developer
applied.
 The developer is wetted or otherwise affected by the penetrant trapped in
the discontinuities so they may be more readily located and evaluated.

6.1 PENETRANT MATERIALS

 Solvent removable material will be used
 The liquid penetrant materials used shall be clearly identified(EN ISO 3452-2)

FERROMETALCO

EN PENETRANT TEST PROCEDURE
 Intermixing of materials from different manufacturers is not permitted.

6.2 SURFACE PREPARATION

 If not otherwise specified , penetrant examination may be carried out on as

welded surfaces
 The width of the test surface shall include the weld metal and the adjacent parent
metal up to a distance of 10 mm on each side and shall be dry and free of all dirt,
grease , lint, scale , welding flux, weld spatter, paint , oil, and other extraneous
matter that could obscure surface openings or otherwise interfere with the
examination

6.3 PENETRANT APPLICATION

 Penetrant can be applied by, brushing , or spraying.

 Penetrant on the surfaces being examined shall not be allowed to dry or the
examination process must be repeated.
 The penetration time can vary from 5 min to 60 min .
 The penetration time should be at least as long as the time used for the
determination of sensitivity .
 Guidance on these matters is given in annex A and in EN 571-1

6.4 EXCESS PENETRANT REMOVAL

 Excess solvent removable penetrants shall be removed by wiping with soft cloth
rags or absorbent paper until most traces of penetrant have been removed; the
remaining traces shall be removed by wiping the surface lightly with cloth or
absorbent paper which has been moistened with solvent .
 The use of excess solvent shall be avoided
 Flushing the surface with solvent , following the application of the penetrant and
prior to developing , is prohibited,

6.5 DRYING

For the solvent removable technique , the surfaces may be dried by normal wiping.

6.6 DEVELOPER APPLICATION

The developer shall be applied immediately after drying is completed

 Prior to application , the developer shall be agitated to ensure adequate
dispersion of suspended particles

EN PENETRANT TEST PROCEDURE
 Developer shall be applied obtaining a thin coating over the entire surface being
examined
The development time should be between 10 min and 30 min , longer times may
be agreed between the contracting parties .
Blotting is not permitted.

6.7 VISUAL EXAMINATION

Final interpretation shall be carried out when the developement time has
elapsed, under adequate illumination ( of not less than 500 lux).

6.8 INTERPRETATION OF THE RESULTS

 As the developer dries to a smooth even white coating , red indication will
appear at the location of discontinuities
 Depth of surface discontinuities may be correlated with the richness of colour
and speed of bleed - out.
 Usually a crack or similar opening will show as a lined tight crack, or a partially
welded lap will show as a broken line.
 Gross porosity may produce large indications covering an entire area

6.9 EVALUTION OF INDICATIONS

 Mechanical discontinuities at the surface will be indicated by bleeding out of the

penetrant ; however localized surface imperfections, such as may occur from
machining marks or surface conditions, may produce similar indications which
are not relevant to the detection of unacceptable discontinuities.
 Any indication which is believed to be not relevant , shall be regarded as a
defect and shall be re-examined to verify whether or not actual defects are
present surface conditioning may precede the re-examination not relevant
indications and broad areas of pigmentation which would mask indication of
defects are unacceptable

 Relevant indications are those which result from mechanical discontinuities

Linear indications are those indications in which the length is more than three times
the width.
Rounded indications are indications which are circular or elliptical with the length
less than three times the width.

 An indication of a discontinuity may be larger than the discontinuity that causes it;
however, the size of the indication and not the size of the discontinuity is the basis
of acceptance or rejection.

EN PENETRANT TEST PROCEDURE
 Discontinuities at the surface will be indicated by bleed -out of penetrant ;
however , localized surface irregularities due to machined marks or other surface
conditions may produce false indication.

 Broad areas of fluorescence or pigmentation which could mask indications of

discontinuities are unacceptable, and such areas shall be cleaned and reexamined.

6.10 ACCEPTANCE STANDARDS

According to EN 1289 Table # 1(Acceptance levels for indications)

6.11 POST CLEANING

When the inspection is concluded, the dye penetrant materials shall be completely
removed by brushing or wiping or cleaner , as applicable.

6.12 PERSONNEL QUALIFICATION

All personnel performing liquid penetrant examination according to this procedure

shall be qualified as per testing recommended practice No. EN473

6.13 IDENTIFICATION AND RECORDING OF TESTED JOINTS

 Each tested joint or , if necessary , section of tested joint must be clearly identified
 All tests will be recorded in the relevant form to be completely filled in
