TDMA
TDMA
Access (TDMA)
TDMA
•Different Earth stations transmit traffic bursts in a period time-frame
called the TDMA frame.
•Over the length of a burst, each Earth station has the entire transponder
bandwidth at its disposal.
•The traffic bursts from different Earth stations are synchronized so that
all bursts arriving at the transponder are closely spaced but do not overlap.
•All Earth stations can receive the entire sequence and extract the signal
of their interest.
Advantages of TDMA
•Utilize full BW and EIRP.
Disadvantage
• When burst are received at earth stations then it need to find in burst
where its information is present.
• Lot of additional information also need to sent along with data due to
synchronization.
Pre-assigned TDMA
•The time slots are pre-assigned to the Earth stations.
Search and find the transmission bit timing and synchronize the bits with clock.
Bit Time Recovery (BTR) and Bit synchronization time
Guard Time
at different station transmission clock may vary hence each burst are
separated by some time.

PROBLEM 2
In a TDMA system in each frame, number of reference burst is 2, reference burst bit
is 576 bits, preamble for each user burst is 560 bit, guard time equivalent bit is 128
bit, frame time is 2 ms and frame efficiency is 95%, TDMA transmission rate is 96.64
Mbps and voice channel rate is 64 kbps. Find number of voice channels if total no. of
earth station is 12.

PROBLEM 3
A station is allotted to start its burst 1.5msec from start of reference frame having
frame duration of 4 msec. Estimated station to satellite propagation delay is 125 msec.
Find burst transmit time after reference burst reception. The total number of frame is
63 in TDMA frame.

Satellite Switched TDMA
Advance multiple access for high traffic scenario.
Used in INTELSAT satellite.
Several antenna spot beams are utilized to provide services
to different regions on the Earth’s surface
If multiple antenna beams can be reconfigured very fast then
additional access capabilities can be added and number of users
can be increased.
Important Problem
A digital system uses a satellite transponder with a bandwidth of 54 MHz. Several earth stations share
the transponder using QPSK modulation with either FDMA or TDMA. When FDMA is used, total
C/NO that can be supported for a full transponder is 95 dBHz. Receive station G/T is -10 dB/K, free
space loss is 192 dB and miscellaneous loss is 6.6 dB. Each carrier bandwidth is 1.2 MHz. When
TDMA is used, the number of reference bursts is 2, the reference burst bit is 576, preamble for each
user burst is 560 bit, guard time equivalent is 128 bit, frame efficiency is 85% and TDMA
transmission rate is 120 Mbps. Find
(ii) TDMA frame time if the number of carriers is same in the case of FDMA and TDMA.
