Spring

1. Design a helical compression spring, made of oil hardened and temperated plain carbon steel, for a
maximum static load of 1200N and maximum deflection of 25 mm using the value of spring index as 5.
The ultimate tensile strength and modulus of rigidity for spring material are 1150 N/mm2 and 85 GN/m2
resp.

2. it is required to design a helical compression spring with plain ends. Made of cold drawn plain carbon
steel. For carrying a maximum pure static force of 1000N. the ultimate tensile strength and modulus of
rigidity for spring material are 1430N/mm2 and 85N/mm2 respectively. The spring rate is 48 N/mm. if
spring index is 5. Determine

Wire diameter, total number of coil, free length, pitch.

3) A helical compression spring is made of 1.6 mm diameter wire with spring index is 6. The permissible
shear stress for the spring wire is 345 N/mm2. While modulus of rigidity is 80GPa. If the stiffness of the
spring is 1.8 N/mm, determine

The required number of coils, and the allowable deflection.

4) Design a close coiled helical compression spring with a following data

Service load rang 2250N to 2750N, axial deflection is 6 mm, spring index is 5, permissible shear stress
for the spring is 420N/mm2, modulus of rigidity for the spring material is 84 KN/mm2.

5) it is desired to design a valve spring for IC engine with the following details:

Spring load 80 N, when valve is closed

Spring load 100 N, when valve is open

Space constraints for the fitment of spring are: in side guide bush diameter = 24 mm and outside recess
diameter = 36 mm

Valve lift = 5 mm

Ultimate tensile strength = 710 N/mm2

Modulus of rigidity = 8*104 N/mm2

Permissible shear stress for spring wire is 0.5 *ultimate tensile strength
Determine

Wire diameter, spring index, total number of coil, solid length of spring, free length of spring

6) A mechanism used in printing machinery consists of a tension spring assembled with a preload of 30N.
the wire diameter of spring is 2 mm with a spring index of 6. The spring has 18 active coils. The spring
wire is hot drawn and oil tempered having following material properties:

Design a shear stress : 680 N/mm2

Modulus of rigidity = 8* 104 N/mm2

Determine : Initial shear stress in the wire, spring rate, maximum force the spring can take.

7) Two helical springs are arranged in a concentric manner with one inside the other. Both the springs
have same free length and carry a total load of 5500 N. the outer spring has 8 coils with mean coil
diameter of 128 mm and wire diameter of 16 mm. the inner spring has 12 coils with the mean coil
diameter of 84 mm and wire diameter of 12 mm. determine

The maximum load carried by each spring, the total deflection of each spring and the maximum stress in
each spring.

8) A heavy duty spring is composed of two concentric helical compression springs having following
specifications:

Description Outer spring Inner spring

Outside diameter of coil 240mm 150mm
Number of active coils 7 10
Diameter of wire 40mm 25mm
Free height of spring H+20 H
Modulus of rigidity 8*104 N/mm2 8*104 N/mm2

For a load of 10 N find:

Deflection of each spring, load carried by each spring, combined spring stiffness and shear stress induced
in each spring.
9) A composite compression spring has two closed coil helical springs and is subjected to an axial load of
400 N. the outer spring is 15 mmlonger than the inner spring. The outer spring has 10 coils of 40mm
mean diameter and 5 mm wire diameter. The inner spring has 8 coils of 30 mm mean diameter and 4 mm
wire diameter. If the modulus of rigidity for spring material is 84 GPa. Determine:

The compression of each spring, the load carried by each spring and the shear stress induced in each
spring.

10) A helical compression spring made of oil hardened and tempered steel wire (ultimate stress
1300N/mm2, modulus of rigidity G= 81.5 GN/mm2)is to be used in the exhaust valve mechanism of
diesel engine. The operating force on the spring varies continuously between 200 N and 500 N. the
maximum valve lift is 21.5 mm. if the required factor of safety is 1.5 determine :

The spring wire diameter, the mean coil diameter and the number of active coils.

Take spring index is 8
