SYMBIOSIS INSTITUTE OF OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT

MBA (22-24) - SEMESTER II

Project Based Learning - I

1. Introduction
The Programme structure of MBA (OM) includes elective course of live project named
Project Based Learning in second and third semester. The objective is to allow students to
practically try their hands at solving certain real time problem solving at work with the help
of newly gained knowledge and faculty mentoring. Project based learning (PBL) is crucial to
higher studies.
"What must a project have in order to be considered an instance of PBL?" The five criteria
are
1. Centrality: PBL projects are central, not peripheral to the curriculum. In this case all projects
MUST pertain to some area in Operations Management.
2. Driving question: Projects are focused on questions or problems that "drive" students to
encounter (and struggle with) the central concepts and principles of a discipline. Specifically
with full time programme the students engage in problem solving approaches planned around
the skills/ techniques learnt.
3. Constructive investigations: An investigation is a goal directed process that involves
inquiry, knowledge building, and resolution. Investigations may be design, decision-making,
problem-finding, problem-solving, discovery, or model-building processes.
4. Autonomy: Projects are student-driven to a significant degree. PBL projects are not, in the
main, teacher-led, scripted, or packaged. Students will take lead in conceptualizing,
designing, implementing and reporting on the project work.
5. Realism: Projects are realistic and not scenario or academic challenges. All Projects will be
identified on real-time issues faced within the company. Project topics will center on real-life
challenges where the focus is on authentic (not simulated) problems or questions and where
solutions have the potential to be implemented.
