Question 1 (15 Points)

This document is the text of an exam for an air conditioning course given on January 24, 2023. It contains two questions with multiple parts each. Question 1 involves using the ideal gas law to analyze changes in temperature, pressure, and mass of air in a piston-cylinder system as heat is added. Question 2 involves calculating pressure, quality, internal energy, and heat required for a water-steam mixture in a pressure cooker heated to different temperatures. Tables of thermodynamic properties of water are provided in an appendix.

ME40107 Air Conditioning Spring 2023

Date of Examination: 24 Jan 2023 Time: 40min. Full Marks 30

No. of Students: 48 3rd Yr BArch
Answer all questions. The marks are given on the left margin in the box. Symbols have their usual
meanings. Clearly indicate the coordinate system used in your analysis. Make suitable assumptions
wherever necessary. Please state your assumptions clearly. You may refer to your class notes.
Air: C p = 1.005kJ/kg.K, C v = 0.718kJ/kg, R air = 0.287kJ/kg.K

Question 1 (15 points)

Air contained in a frictionless piston-cylinder arrangement is pressurised due to the weight of the
piston. As heat is added the volume of air expands lifting the piston. Assume air to be an ideal
gas.
(a) If the volume increases by 25% and the initial temperature is T1 = 300K find the final tem- (5)
perature T2 in K.
(b) Determine the head added to the air in terms of J/kg (5)
(c) If the heat added is 753.75 J find the mass of air in kg. (5)

Question 2 (15 points)

Water is heated in a 5 litre pressure cooker with the pressure-release valve closed.
(a) What is the pressure (in kPa) of the water-steam mixture at 120◦ C. (5)
(b) If the mass of water-steam mixture is 0.5kg find the quality and internal energy of the water- (5)
steam mixture at 120◦ C
(c) If the mass of water-steam mixture is 0.5kg, find the heat (in J) required to raise the temper- (5)
ature of the water-steam mixture to 150◦ C.
