Chapter 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
This chapter includes the Introduction, Objectives of the Study,
Scope and Delimitation, Conceptual Framework,Significance of the
Study, and the Definition of Terms used.

Introduction
When COVID-19 arrived, all sectors worldwide were
devastated by its impact, including education. Cahapay, 2020),
resulting in the sudden closure of schools. But, the development
of technological advancement provides a technical platform for
education(Xie, Shiau, and Nah, 2020) or the new normal education
whereby students can continue their studies through digital
platforms, printed modules, television and radio(Childhope,
2021) It is suitable in the COVID-19 pandemic as it ensures that
learners will continue their educational journey at home(STI,
2019) and ensures that they will continue to gain some knowledge.

The sudden shift in the education system forced students

to adapt to the new learning environment. It has shortcomings
which include technical constraints, the presence of
restrictions, and a lack of engagement(Xie et al., 2020) In this
situation, students need a stable connection and self-motivation,
and engagement to continue their learnings. Student engagement is
a strong predictor of educational outcomes. Students with higher
cognitive engagement have higher grades and aspire to higher
education (Wang and Ecles, 2012.) But that's the struggle most of
the students face. Students’ lack of access to a personal
computer or smartphone, as well as the internet, were found to be
the most significant factors that affects their engagement in
online learning.(Werang and Leba, 2022)

Students also faced anxiety and depression during new normal

education(Barrot et., Al 2021). Students with anxiety and
depression can harm their academic performance and promote
underachievement(Ben Lesser, 2021)because struggling with anxiety

or depression destroys students' learning abilities. Teachers are

important figures in schools(Boholano and Jamon, 2021) Because
teachers' influence and ideas affect student academic performance
(Grinchland, 2021.) Therefore teachers need to teach students and
maintain students' engagement during new normal education. But,
the sudden shift in the education system also made them struggle
to deliver quality education; therefore, it can affect students'
learning ability or acquisition skills.

Acquiring essential knowledge skills is a vital medium

for education. Whereby education shapes people to succeed.
(Lopez, 2019) The sudden shift in education, which alters the
students' learning capability, motivated the researchers to
conduct this study. The study will look at how new normal
education affects students' existing acquisition skills. In
connection with this, the researchers want to seek the answer to
the study's objectives.

Objectives of the Study

1.2.1 General Objective
Generally, this research aims to determine the effectiveness
of new normal education in learning acquisition skills of senior
high school student

1.2.2 Specific Objectives

Specifically, this study aims:
1. To determine how effective the learning acquisition skills
of SHS students by applying them through real-life situations.
2. to determine SHS acquisition skills during new normal
education in terms of:
1.1 their grades during 1st semester
1.2 their stock knowledge about their subjects/lessons
3. To determine the differences in terms of learning

Significance of the Study

To the students, this study will help them to identify the

significant role of new normal education and how it contributed
to their current acquisition skills. The outcomes of this study
will provide and increase students' knowledge about the
different variables under new normal education that might affect
their existing acquisition skills.
To parents, this study will assist parents in deciding whether
or not to enroll their child in a new normal education. This
will also assist them in comprehending their child's acquisition
skills during the new normal, which may have led to their
current behavior (depress, often mood swings, exasperation,
etc.). Some parents have difficulty determining whether their
kid is accountable for their learning abilities, but by
participating in this study, they will find the true explanation
for their son or daughter's current learning ability.
To teachers, this study may increase their knowledge about the
student's acquisition skills during new normal education. By
conducting this study, teachers will also be guided on how to
deal with their students and on how to manage their strategies
in able to deal with students learning capabilities.
To society, this study can raise public knowledge regarding
the usefulness of new normal education in improving students'
learning abilities. This research can serve as society's basis
whether new normal education (teaching via digital media) is
beneficial. So in case of arising global concerns again, this
research will help society decide whether or not to employ new
normal schooling.
To future researchers, this research will help them boost and
deepen their understanding of the effectiveness of new normal
education in learning acquisition skills of students, which they
can use in their studies related to this topic. By conducting

and statements that will further enlighten the research.

Related Literature

Local literature

According to Aucensillo (2021), most students in

different levels are dealing with the new normal education,
either via online learning or modular learning, amid the ongoing
pandemic. The COVID-19 situation caught students, unprepared and
encountering difficulties in dealing with new normal learning,
these results in mental and physical changes such as the
prevalence of stress, depression, anxiety, and disturbance of
daily routine. Aucensillo (2021) also found some of the
student’s difficulties in using digital platforms, including
power outages, disruptions of their colleagues, and poor
internet connectivity.

Dayagbil et al. (2021) stated that one of the impacts the

world health crisis has is the migration of online learning
modalities to mitigate the risk of face-to-face learning during
COVID-19. Schools in the Philippines are forced to transformr
education from face-to-face learning to online learning.
However, this sudden shift has resulted in problems, especially
for learners without access to technology. Especially according
to Akamai (2017), The Philippines has the slowest internet
connectivity in Asia.

Foreign Literature

Basilaia & Kvavadze (2020) stated that three classrooms exist

in the educational system across the world. The three classrooms
are the traditional classroom, the modern classroom, and the
latest one, the virtual classroom. Virtual classrooms are where
online education is carried out using information and
communication technology (ICT) to assist learning from different
remote locations.

According to Kuama (2016), the problems that students may

encounter in an online learning system may have a negative
impact on their academic achievement. Their cognitive
impairments, technical fears, and learning style preferences may
contribute to them. However, effective and efficient tools and
proficient online learning strategies would lead to better
academic achievement. Kuama (2016) also added that using
appropriate online learning strategies will undoubtedly aid in

pursuing an excellent academic outcome. It is also stated that

learners learn more efficiently, quickly, and pleasurably
through online learning. It was being supported by several
websites companies, such as Khan Academy, Udacity, edX, and
Coursera, which believes that online learning will be able to
provide a world-class education to anyone, anywhere and anytime
as long as they have access to the internet. Because based to
Muthuprasad (2021), technological constraints are the major
problem towards successful online learning.

In addition to that, Xie et al. (2020) stated that

learners who have basic technical skills and access (i.e.,
hardware and software) and are self-disciplined in time
management and self-motivated could succeed in an online class.

Related Studies

Local Studies

According to Agum et al. (2021), Filipino college students

during new normal education faced various challenges, such as
difficulty consulting teachers, logistic issues and poor internet
connections, and family commitments and distractions. In the
Philippines, Look upgrade (2021),stated that teachers are the
ones who develop our skills and talents. But since there was no
face-to-face interaction between the instructors and learners,
connection between them became limited and further created a
distance between them. The authors also found that internet
connection is a challenge for the learners and teachers during

new normal education, because the new normal demands

digitalization, steady electricity, stable connection, and a good
weather condition, since almost all of the participants live in
remote areas where rains interfere with internet connection and
electricity. In addition to that, the authors also emphasizes the
different destructions at home that interfere to the learners
focus , this include the role of the learners they play at home ,
family destructions, and some presence of entertainment like
Television and Netflix.Agum et al(2021), also suggested that
despite the challenges mentioned ,students cultivated self-
reliance, prepared contingency plans, and developed time
management. Moreover, students also gained some self-motivation
and academic independence throughout the mentioned challenges.

In addition to that Dayagbil et. al(2021), found some

concerns towards teaching and learning continuity amid and
beyond pandemic. These concerns are the problem towards internet
connection, home destructions, learning environment. The
researchers study indicates that the alternative tasks are not
sufficient in able for students to acquire competencies required
at the end of their semester. The researchers also developed
that active engagement are the drivers of the learning process
and learning outcomes of the facilitators, mentors and learners.
Moreover, the unstable internet connection makes student’s home
environment less conductive to sustain learning facilitated by
the online readings. The lack of connection or feedback from the
teachers is also essential to enhance learner’s understanding
towards a particular concept (Dzakiria, 2012) However, most of
the participants did not receive much feedback from their
teachers.

Foreign Studies

Based on the study of Kenworthy(2016), A good education can

enhance both cognitive and noncognitive capabilities. Cognitive
skills include knowledge, reasoning, problem solving, and
communication abilities. Noncognitive skills include discipline,
focus, perseverance, punctuality, friendliness and more. In
another study, according to Strauss(3019) the real stuff of
schooling or education was to achieved “transfer learning.”
Because it is the purpose of schooling. Transfer of learning is
the term used to describe applying what one has learned during a
school year and how a student apply it in different context. For
example studying English class is designed to pass the exams,
but to be competent and critical lifelong writers and readers;
the goal of studying history is not to memorize the dates of
significant battles but to develop a broad historical
perspective that students can apply to understand the world
around them today and in the future. Based to Strauss(2017),
there are two types of transfer learning, near and far learning.
Near transfer focuses on procedures or a routine in which gained
skills in one area are more easily applied regularly to a
scenario that is relatively similar. For example, students might
apply the essay writing skills they learn in English class to
writing essays in Social Studies courses. While far learning
students use their judgment about applying their skills and
knowledge from one context to a substantially different one.

While academic success on the other hand, according to the

study of Cachia,Lynam and Stock.(2017)there are two factors that
the students perceive that contributes to their academic
success. The first one is the extrinsic factor that consist of
teacher provision and support availability. While the second
factor is the intrinsic factor that consist of self-management,
self motivation and personal skills( communication skills, time-
management and professionalism. Stock et al. (2017) also found
out that academic success is not just about grades but also
about gaining knowledge.

In another study based on McCann et al. (2019), emotional

intelligence are one of the three predictors of academic success
after conscientiousness and intelligent. McCann et al.(2019)
found out that students with higher emotional intelligence
tended to get higher grades and better achievement test scores
than those with lower emotional intelligence scores. This
finding held true even when controlling for intelligence and
personality factors.

Bali & Liu (2018), found out that students found face-to-face
learning to has a higher positive perceptions, higher levels and
stronger sense of learning compared to online learning. Bali and
Liu found the vast difference between social presence, social
interaction, and satisfaction of students during face-to-face
learning and online learning which are the essential factors
towards positive perceptions in learning. The study shows that
face-to-face learning is higher than online learning due to the

lack of social presence and social interaction itself toward

online learning.

In another study, Muthuprasad et al. (2021) stated that

online learning was advantageous as it gives learners
flexibility and convenience. The authors also found out that the
Agriculture students in India are ready to take online classes
to manage curriculum during this pandemic. The majority of (70
%) student’s participants evinced a positive perception towards
online classes amid the Corona virus. The study also indicates
the different preferences of students towards online classes,
such as recorded classes, interactive sessions with quizzes at
the end of the class, and the use of a mobile phone as a medium
to online learning, that will further help design effective
online learning environment. However, Muthuprasad et al.
Emphasize that online class is more challenging than traditional
classroom due to technological constraints, the instructor’s
inability to handle information and technology, and delayed
feedback.

Pham, Le & Do (2021), suggest some factors affecting

students’ online learning outcomes during the COVID-19. These
factors are the perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness.
The perceived ease of use is defined as the degree to which an
individual believes a product or new technology is easy to use
and easy to learn. If a user believes that the product or new
technology is easier to use, they will be more willing to

VALUES AND LANGUAGE SCHOOL

continue using the technology(Huang, 2021)While the Perceived

usefulness refers to the degree to which an individual believes
that using a particular form of e-learning enhances his or her
learning achievement. At the end of the study, Pham et al.
(2021) stated that students need to improve their initiative,
encourage them to interact with their instructors and peers
actively, enhance self-study ability. School also need to help
students to realize the usefulness of online classes, especially
during pandemic. The online system also needs to improve
accessibility, allow students to register actively and should
be flexible.
