Teacher Lesson Plan

Teacher Lesson Plan

Subject: English Grade Level: 4th Year

Date: October, 20 , 2022 Time:1:30 minutes

Teaching Method : Content based instructions, Cooperative learning, Natural Approach

Content: Introduction to Sociolinguistics

Lesson Aim/Objective:

Students be able to: understand the relationship between language and society.

Students be able to: understand why we speak different in different social context.

Materials: Projector, computer, video, Worksheet, Book, speakers.

Motivation: warm up- Step 1: Start class asking the student to make a list of all the names
they are called by people who they know. For each name note who uses it to you and when or
where.
Do some people call you by more than one name?
What are the reasons why people choose one name rather than another for you? ( 5 minutes to
do it and 5 minutes to share it with the class.)

Information / background knowledge– Since they are 4th year English students, the teacher
assume that they have a background knowledge of language and linguistics, etc.

Instruction/Procedure:

Step 2: After the warm up exercise, the teacher tries to extract from the students what is their
perception of the exercise they did and what is that exercise related to sociolinguistics. (5
minutes)
Step 3: The teacher introduce the Topic Sociolinguistics start by giving a definition of it: (In
linguistics, sociolinguistics is a branch of the discipline that deals with the study of language in
relation to Society…) And also explain some social factors and aspects that impact how
individuals uses language. The teacher explain those social factors: Location geographically,
Occupation, Gender, Our guardians/parents, Age, Socioeconomic status - class and degree of
education, Ethnicity. Showing examples and asking the students to give examples of their own
reality. (20 minutes explaining the content and 10 minutes doing an exercise). Pag 1-2 of the
book Book Janet Holmes An introduction to sociolinguistics 3rd ed.

Step 3: The students will watch a video and then give their opinion on it. ( 10 minutes to watch
the video and 5 minutes to discuss about it ).

Step 4: Time to put in practice what the students learned related to the context studied, the
teacher will give some exercises to practice. (15 minutes to do and 10 to share it).
