OF DON GALO ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
IN DELIVERING THEIR CURRICULUM IN
THIS NEW NORMAL

I. INTRODUCTION

Don Galo Elementary School (DGES) aiming to improve the learner’s

academic performance during this pandemic. In support to these teachers at
Don Galo Elementary School conducted their own research on what are the
best things to do regarding this matter. The author aims to aid some problems
of teachers now adays when it comes in delivering the lessons through online
discussion. Internet connections, gadgets, time of parents in guiding their kids
during modular activities, financial budget for load and other more problems
can be a big hindrance in students learning. Education is very important, and
we can’t just stop it just because of this pandemic. If we fight for our lives
against this virus in order live, then let’s all stand as one to plan and build a
better way of education. UNISCO once said “Education cannot wait. If learning
stops, we will lose human capital’’. The organization believes that educational
quality, access, and system strengthening cannot be compromised in times of
crisis. The Department of Education is doing the best that they can to make
things easy for the learners to avail better education even during pandemic.
Now, we as teachers are doing our best in order to implement those plans
and rules in teaching. I hope that this research can help us to learn more on
how to fight and cope with and the problems that we are facing right now not
just as a facilitator of learning but as an individual. We can do it as long as we
stand as one and put on our heart and the reason why we are in this
profession.

This research aims to find solutions to the following questions:

A. What are the effects of new normal learning to learners and teachers?
B. What are the factors affecting the teacher’s delivery of the lessons?
C. As a teacher, during this pandemic what will you do to those pupils who
can’t read and write?
D. What should we do to those who can’t join the online class discussion?
E. What is the effect of class size during online discussion?

II. BACKGROUND FOR THE STUDY/REVIEW OF RELATED

LITERATURE
 This research was done to address the problems that are facing
right now by the teachers. Our nation is now suffering a big impact of this
pandemic not just in working force of the country but specially in the
sector of education. The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed how sound
policies, timely interventions, proper resource allocations, and systematic
prioritization of necessities could have significant impacts on how a nation
will survive crisis contexts. These factors have profound, if not irreversible,
ramifications in the context of developing countries, such as the
Philippines, whose very limited resources are stretched thinly by the
effects of the pandemic. Philippines is one of those poor countries that are
at risk during this pandemic. Today the virus is still evolving, and education
sector is the one that is directly affected. Financial aspects in both sides of
parents and teachers are one of the problems. During the first day of
school, teachers need to produce modules in all subjects that can cater
every pupil at school in all grade levels. Production is not that easy some
teachers need to provide materials from their own pocket or ask for
donations. Some teachers had to cross rivers to distribute these modules
to the homes of their students.
Pushing through the online classes has an effect on teachers and
learners mental and emotional state. Not everyone can join in online
classes because not everyone can access the internet or have gadgets to
use. Even teachers are straggling in this new normal for not all teachers
know how to use computers and its other functions. At the first quarter
DGES used modules as learning materials but in the following months
some donations of tablets came in to be used by the learners. But there
are still some problems like the internet connections, some didn’t yet
received gadgets from school, time of parents in guiding their kids during
modular activities, financial budget for load.
Learners need to adapt in the new situation as well as the teachers.
The problem in giving proper grade to the learners is of the crucial
problems of teachers during these virtual classes. Not all pupils can join in
an online discussion, some are having problems in submission, and during
the conduct of PHIL-IRI I learned that there are some pupils who can’t
even read or write this is just some problems I saw when it comes in giving
of grade because we teachers, can’t just give them low grades because
they can’t attend online classes or can’t. We know in ourselves that during
this time they don’t deserve such grades because we are not there in their
sides to guide and teach them properly.
Many competencies can also affect the learners as well as the
teacher’s way of delivering the lessons. The Department of Education
(DepEd) released the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELCs) to
adapt the situation that shall serve as the guideline for the
implementation of the revised K to 12 curricula (Gonzales, 2020). The said
curricula were a result of increasing Philippine basic education from 10 to
12 years by virtue of Republic Act No. 10533 or the Enhanced Basic
Education Act of 2013. The MELCs further narrow down all the possible
essential lessons, concepts, and skills sets that a student must know,
acquire, and understand, even if the classes will be conducted through
different modalities sans face-to-face physical classroom interactions.
Meanwhile, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) also
implemented changes in the possible delivery of the curriculum and
accessibility to student services to further address the needs of the
students in higher education (Boliver, 2020; Magsambol, 2020). The
proverbial ball now lies on the efficiency and effectiveness of these plans
of action towards the holistic development of students while staying in
their own homes. Interestingly, it is at this juncture where the implications
of having streamlined curricula coupled with changes in strategies in
delivering education are revealed. 
During the old normal, teachers take charge of the education of
students. They prepare lesson plans and conduct face-to-face lectures and
activities. Teachers facilitate the building of communities of inquiry and
learning wherein students can collaborate with each other to broaden and
deepen their understanding of their lessons. In this set-up, indeed, there
were instances wherein students sleep or chat with their seatmates inside
the classroom. They also sometimes talked over each other, resulting in
noise instead of collaborative dialogue. Some did assignments for other
classes or prepared for a quiz for the next class during lectures.
Fortunately, given that the set-up is face-to-face, teachers can also
respond appropriately. Teachers can call the attention of their students
and have them do extra activities, confiscate paraphernalia that do not
contribute to the discussion, or make the discussion more interesting to
get their attention. All these play different roles that contribute to a richer
and more effective learning interaction, which is absent in the new normal

III. DESCRIPTION OF THE RESEARCH CONTEXT

This research will be conducted to the teachers at Don Galo

Elementary School, Paranaque City, National Capital Region. The data will be
gathered through online survey.
The participants of this research will be my co-teachers at Don Galo
Elementary School in all grade levels.
Before the author will conduct this research the consent or permission
of the school head Ma’am Michelle D. Camposano is needed. The consent will
be asking through a formal letter with the signature of the author and school
head.
The questionnaire that will be using might contain personal views of
the teachers regarding some questions. The author assures the participants all
the data and information’s won’t leak, and the authors alone will be the one
can access the said data. Since the questions will be conducted online after
the questionnaires will be printing together with the answers of the
participants their name and grade level will be hidden as part of their
protection in any cases, issues or problems that may occur.

IV. METHODS FOR DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS: HOW WILL I

COLLECT, ORGANIZE, AND ANALYZE THE DATA
 In this action research, the author will be using qualitative approach in
determining the factors that are affecting the teachers in delivering their
curriculum in this new normal. This research will be specific only on the
problems facing by the teachers to the learners during this pandemic. The
method of data collection will be interviewing by the use of questionnaires via
online communication (messenger or email). The questionnaires will be sent
by the participants privately and they need to send back their response as
soon as they are done answering the questions.
After all the respondents give their response all data will be gathered
and analyze to answer the questions stated above. The data will be analyzing
according on how many of them got the same response on each question. All
of the data materials used to gather information’s will be posted.
Doing this research might not be easy and time consuming but since
this research was done to answer some of our problems to the academic state
of our pupils the solution is need as soon as possible. I am planning to do this
research with in two weeks and come up with a possible, realistic and solid
solutions that we can use as teachers.

V. IMPORTANCE AND POTENTIAL SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This research was conducted to find solutions in the present
problems of the teachers in delivering the lessons to the learners. This
work aims to benefit by the teachers, parents, future researchers, school
head, community and learners. If the problems were recognized and each
teacher will give their solutions, from those ideas we can analyze what
proper things teachers should do to minimize those problems.
This study hopes to establish better solutions of the teacher’s
primary problem in new normal form of teaching. Furthermore, the study
could be of the importance to the following:
1. To Future researchers - The ideas presented may be used as reference data
in conducting new research or in testing the validity of other related
findings. This study will also serve as their cross-reference that will give
them a background or an overview of factors affecting teachers in
delivering their curriculum this new normal.
 2. To the parents – Through this study the parents will know the problems
that the teachers are facing in teaching their kids. So that, the parents can
help the teachers in facilitating the learning of their kids at home specially
in reading and writing.
3. School heads – Through this study, school head will be able to know what
problems his/her teachers are facing in delivering the lesson during this
pandemic so that, the leader could also do or come up with an effective
approach and plan regarding the problem.
4. To teachers – Since this study was made to answer the problems of
teachers the findings of this study is a big help for teachers on how to
handle different problems in online teaching. One teacher can share their
ideas to one another that can be useful in solving online classes problems.
5. To community – Through this study, the community would understand how
hard this new normal in the side of teachers. By the help of this study
people in our society will now understand how hard the work of teachers.
6. To the researchers – Through this study, researchers will help them to
accumulate different activities that molds on how the solution will process.
7. To the learners – Through this study, learners is the number one who can
benefit in this because if the problems of teachers in delivering the
curriculum will have the solutions it will be easy to transmit all the lessons
to each learner.
