Assignment 1 One Way ANOVA and Multiple Comparisons

The document provides instructions for Assignment 1 that is due on November 29th, 2022. It includes two tables of hypothetical sales data for three treatment levels with four and eight replicates respectively. Students are asked to: 1) Perform an ANOVA on the first table and test for differences in sales due to treatment level. 2) Perform an ANOVA on the second full table and compare the results to the first ANOVA. 3) Conduct all pairwise comparisons using Tukey's HSD, Student-Newman-Keul's, and Sheffe's tests to further analyze differences between treatment levels.

Due: 29th November, 2021 Assignment 1 BSC 311

BSC 311: Design and Analysis of Experiments

Suppose that we have the data in Table 1, with four replicates of sales for each of three levels of
one factor, treatment.

Table 1. Hypothetical data of four replicates of sales of three treatments

Treatments
1 2 3
6 6 11
3 5 10
8 4 8
3 9 11

Using Table 1, answer the following questions:

a) Perform an ANOVA to test whether there is sufficient evidence of differences in sales due
to the level of the treatment. Use 𝛼 = 0.05.
b) You are now told that the actual data available include eight replicates and is given in Table
2.

Table 2. Hypothetical data of eight replicates of sales of three treatments

Treatment
1 2 3
6 6 11
3 5 10
8 4 8
3 9 11
6 6 11
3 5 10
8 4 8
3 9 11

Due: 29th November, 2021 Assignment 1 BSC 311

A bureaucrat noticed that the last four replicates were duplicates of the first four replicates.
Therefore, he decided to give you only the top half of the data to save time and money. After
all, he reasoned, the second half of the data doesn’t add or subtract from the story contained
by the data in the first half.

Using Table 2, answer the following questions:

c) Perform an ANOVA on these data to test whether there is sufficient evidence that
differences in sales are due to the level of the treatment. Again, use 𝛼 = 0.05.
d) Compare the results in (a) and (b) and discuss.
e) Perform all pairwise comparisons for data using the following:
i) Tukey’s HSD test (use 𝛼 = 0.05),
ii) Student-Newman-Keul’s test (use 𝛼 = 0.05), and
iii) Sheffe’s test (use 𝛼 = 0.05).

Notes on submission
a) The assignment should be hand-written.
b) Submission time is between 1000 to 1300 hrs on Tuesday, 29th of November, 2022.
c) You are free to submit before the due date.
