Writing a summary
When you write a short summary of an article, use this
structure:
1 Say who the article is by, what it's called and where
it's from.
2 Give the overall point/argument/theory the article
puts forward.
3 Give the first or main example the author uses to
explain the point.
4 Give one or two more details about the example or
introduce another point that the article makes.
5 Explain how the article ends.
A summary doesn't always follow the same pattem as
the original article, because an article often starts with
an example or background information, and the main
point the author is making may only become dear later
in the article.
As well as thinking about the structure, remember that:
• when you summarise, you need to paraphrase (i.e.

What makes a job important and enjoyable? We asked five people who work ¡n the health
industry for their opinions.
Whydo I do myjob? Well, I feel it's a very important job. I help people when somethingbad happens
to them. A lot of the people I see have suddenly started to feel extremely ill and they are often quite
worried. These people don't have time to make an appointment with their own doctor because
they need help immediately so they come to see me. No two days are ever the same. I have
patients who have nasty injuries, likeadeepcutthat worítstop bleeding I also have patientswho
have developed very high temperatures or patients who are experiencing chest pains. I have to
identify the problem, decide how bad it is and what is the best way to treat it. I like the fact that
I have to make decisions all the time.
I do myjob because I enjoy workingin a small place where I knowall my patients by ñame. I love
working with children. They can come to see me when they ve cut themselves badly or ¡f they ve
got a stomach ache. They can be a bit sad, so I use storybooks and boxes of toys to help to make
them feel better. I think that my job is really important because I talk to the children about the
importance of staying healthy. I explain about good hygiene and eating habits. I think that children
should understand these things in order toavoid health problems when they are adults.
I do myjob because I can't stand seeingan animal in pain. I think the fact that they can't tell
you what's wrong makes my job quite d ifficult A dog can't tell you that it's got a sore throat, but
I can see that the dog isn't feeling well and then try to work out the reasons why. When a dog
comes back to visit a week or so later, and it's happy and back to normal once more, I feel
really happy.
N I do myjob because I know l'm good at it. Patients come to me because their situation is very
serious. They haven't just got a nasty cut or a fever. Often it's a matter of life or death, and I know
that there is a chance I can help them. Although I can spend a lot of time with a patient, I won't
talk to them much because they are asleep. Of course, I meet my patients before and after the
operation, but not for long I don't think l'm very good at talking to people, so I would fmd it hard to
be a community doctor.
I like myjob because I like helping people in my local area I see the same patients regularly, so I get
to know them and their femilies well l'vegotsome patients whosegrandparents are also my patients.
Sometimes the waiting room is like a social club, with people chattingand laughing while they are
waiting to see me. People don't only come to see me for their health problems. I have a very sociable
job. I see pregnant women and their babies, which is always lovely. Also, people come for injections
before they go to interesting places abroad. I chat with my patients about lots of different things.
