6.2 Cleaning and decontamination

If contamination of the centrifuge or centrifuge head occurs, a decontamination procedure must be
performed immediately.

Do not use a cleaning agent which contains chloride or one which crystallises after
drying, for decontamination purposes, as this may damage the centrifuge. If you
intend to use any cleaning agent not listed in the service manual, contact the
manufacturer for approval.
The centrifuge head must not be sterilised.

If the centrifuge has been contaminated with samples or reagents, there is a risk of infection.
Observe all applicable safety regulations and wear protective gloves during the
decontamination.
All cloths, cotton buds, swabs and other material used in the decontamination should be
considered contaminated and thus disposed of.

Material required

• 70% ethanol solution;

• lint-free cloth, cotton bud or swab.

Procedure

A. Remove all components from the tub as described in section “6.3.1 Opening the lid and removing
the centrifuge head” on page 45.
B. Switch off the centrifuge.
C. Disconnect the power plug.
D. Clean the surfaces of the centrifuge head with a lint-free cloth moistened with a 70 % ethanol
solution. The inner surfaces can be cleaned best with cotton buds or swabs moistened with a
70 % ethanol solution.

If the centrifuge head is heavily contaminated (e.g. after breakage of a tube), decontaminate
the centrifuge head by soaking it in a 70 % ethanol solution. Then clean the centrifuge head in
an ultrasonic bath with distilled water if required.

E. Clean the outside of the housing, the tub and the lid (especially the inside face of the lid) with a
lint-free cloth moistened with a 70 % ethanol solution.
F. Allow the centrifuge and centrifuge head sufficient time to dry after decontamination (at least 30
minutes).

Alcohol vapours may accumulate inside the centrifuge if the drying period is too short.
This is a potential fire and explosion hazard
Allow sufficient time for the centrifuge to dry.
