Types of Latent Heat

This document discusses four types of latent heat: latent heat of fusion which is the heat required to change a solid to a liquid; latent heat of condensation which is the heat released when a vapor condenses to a liquid; latent heat of vaporization which is the heat required to change a liquid to a vapor; and latent heat of sublimation which is the heat required to change a solid directly to a vapor without passing through the liquid state, as seen in dry ice. Examples of each type of latent heat are also provided.

Types of latent heat

• • Latent Heat Fusion

• • Latent Heat of Condensation
• • Latent Heat of Vaporization
• • Latent Heat of Sublimation

Latent heat fusion

Latent heat fusion is the amount heat must be added to a solid to change it to a
liquid at constant temperature. Latent heat of fusion is also equal to the heat
that must be removed from a liquid to change it to solid at a constant
temperature. And example of latent heat of fusion is the changing of water to
ice or ice to water.
Latent heat of condensation
Latent heat of consideration is the amount of heat that must be removed from
vapor to change it to a liquid at a constant temperature. An example of talent
heat of consideration is the collecting of moisture on the outside of cold glass.
Latent heat of vaporization
Latent heat of vaporization is the amount of heat that must be added to liquid
to change it to a vapor at a constant temperature. An example of latent of
vaporization is the changing of water into steam.
Latent heat of sublimation

Latent heat of sublimation is the amount of heat that must be added to a substance to change it
from solid to a vapor, with no evidence of going through the liquid state. This process is not possible
in all substances. The most common example of this type is dry ice. The latent heat of sublimation is
equal to the sum of the latent heat of fusion and the latent heat of vaporization.
