Introductory Concept
Motion is defined as the change in position over an interval of time. Motion of an object can be
represented visually through tape charts and motion graphs. Tape charts and motion graphs are
useful tools for visualizing and communicating information about an object’s motion.
Learners will construct or analyze diagrams, graphs or charts to describe whether an object is in
motion or not, or moving with constant speed or whether it is changing in speed or not.

2
Learning Skills:
At the end of this lesson, you should be able to:
1. Create visual representation of the motion of objects through motion graphs
2. Interpret motion graphs

Activity 1. Plot and Interpret My Moves

Objectives:
1. Create a motion graph.
2. Interpret a motion graph

4
Materials: ruler pencil graphing paper

Procedure:
1. Analyze the situation and the data table below.
2. Create the distance-time graph based from the situation/ data given.
3. Join the plotted points using a line.
4. Answer the given guide questions.
Situation1
A motorcyclist leaves home and travels 500 meters in 100 seconds. Then, he stays in the same
place for 400 seconds before travelling back home in 600 seconds.
The table shows the time and the distance travelled by the motorcycle.

TIME (second) Distance (meter)

0 0
100 500
400 500
600 0

Situation 2
A biker leaves home and travels 500 meters in 50 seconds. Then he stays in the same place for
200 seconds before travelling back home in 600 seconds.
Table 2 Time vs. Distance
TIME (second) DISTANCE (meter)
0 0
50 500
200 500
600 0

Guide Questions
1. What can you say with the movement of the object?
2. How does your graph look like?
3. Describe the motion of the motorcycle in these times of travel;
a. From 0 to 100 s
b. From 100 s to 400 s
c. From 400 s to 600 s
4. How will you describe the motion of the object on situation 2?
a. From 0 to 50 s
b. From 50 s to 200 s
c. From 200 s to 600 s

5
5. Based on your answers in questions 3 and 4, when can you say that the body is moving in
constant speed? Zero speed? Constant speed but moving in opposite direction?

Analysis
Directions: After performing the activities, do this task.
1. Create a distance-time graph based from the given situation below and interpret the graph.
Johnny, a pili nut vendor, leaves home and travels 3 km to collect garbage in 2 hours and 15
minutes. When he is already tired, he stays under the tree for 45 minutes before walking again going
home in 2 hours.
2. Describe the graph using the following descriptions;
 Fast constant speed
 Slow
constant
speed
 Zero speed

4
Abstraction
Motion of an object can be represented through a motion graph.

A straight-line graph slanted to the right means

d -----------------------------------------------------------------

6
d A horizontal line graph indicates

d A straight line graph slanted to the left shows

t

Remember
Motion of an object can be represented through motion graphs. Motion graphs are useful tools
for visualizing and communicating information about an object’s motion.
The kind of line graph produced will tell you the motion of an object. An object is moving at a
constant speed if the distance vs. time graph is a straight-line graph slanted to the right. A body is
moving at a constant speed in opposite direction if the d vs t graph is a straight-line graph slanted to
the left. While the d vs t graph is a horizontal line graph it means that the body is not moving or it
has a zero speed.

Application
The graph below shows the motion of a bus.

Time (S)

Choose the correct words from the following list to describe the motion during each segment of the
journey to fill in the blanks.
a. Constant speed
b. Not moving/no motion/zero speed
c. Constant speed but in opposite direction
1. Segment 0 to A. The bus is moving with ____________.
2. Segment A to B. The bus has _____________________.
3. Segment B to C. The bus is moving with _____________ until it reaches its initial position.
4. Segment C to D. The bus stopped. It has ________________’
5. Segment D to E. The bus starts to move again with _________.

Answer Key
Pre – Test
1. B 5. B
2. C 6. A
3. C 7. D
4. C
Activity
Guide Questions
1. The objects are moving at different speeds.
2. Situation 1

Situation 2

8
3. Situation 1 (Motion of a motorcycle)
a. From 0 to 100 s the motorcycle is moving at constant speed
b. From 100 s to 400 s, it is not moving, so speed is zero
c. From 400 s to 600 s, it is moving at constant speed in opposite direction
Situation 2
a. From 0 to 50 s the object is moving at constant speed
b. From 50 s to 200 s, it is not moving, so the speed is zero
c. From 200 s to 600 s, it is moving at constant speed in opposite direction
4. a. A body is moving with constant speed if it is increasing its distance travelled at the same
amount for the same time interval. Meaning its speed does not increase or decrease. The d vs
t graph is a straight line graph slanted to the right.
b. A body has a zero speed if it is not moving. The distance travelled does not change for a
given time interval. Its d vs t graph is a horizontal line graph.
c. A body is moving at a constant speed in opposite direction if the d vs t graph is a straight
line graph slanted to the left.

Analysis
1.

The object is moving with constant speed from point A to B. Then, it stays at rest from
point B to C before returning to its original position with constant speed.

2.First line – constant speed

Second line – slow constant speed
Third line – zero speed

9
Abstraction
 A body is moving with a constant speed
 A body has a zero speed or it is not moving
 A body is moving at a constant speed in opposite direction
Application
1. Constant speed
2. Not moving
3. Constant speed but in opposite direction
4. Zero speed/no motion
5. Constant speed
