LONG EXAM 3 LECTURE PROBLEMS

1. A 40kg steel casting (CP=0.5kJ/kg-K) at a temperature of 450˚C is quenched

in 150kg of oil (CP=2.5kJ/kg-K) at 25˚C. If there are no heat losses,
a. What is the entropy change of the casting?
b. What is the change in entropy of the oil?
c. What is the entropy change of both considered together?

2. Consider A (l, 75˚C) → A (g, 155˚C) which is carried out at constant

pressure. The total ΔS for this process was found to be 75J/mol-K. For A (l)
and A (g), the CP are 75J/mol-K and 29J/mol-K, respectively, and are
independent of temperature. Calculate ΔHVAP for A (l) at 125˚C (boiling
point).

3. What is the entropy change involved in transforming 1 g of ice at 0 oC and 1

atm pressure into vapor at 150oC and 0.1 atm? Assume that the specific heats
of liquid and water vapor are 1.0 and 0.45 cal/g-Co, respectively.

4. For a certain ideal monoatomic gas, calculate the change in entropy

experienced by 3mol of the gas on being heated from 300 to 600K at
a. constant pressure and
b. constant volume

5. Calculate the entropy change when argon at 25°C and 1bar in a container of
volume 0.5dm3 is allowed to expand to 1dm3 and is simultaneously heated to
100°C.

6. Determine the pressure at 500 K after 2 moles of an ideal gas is heated from
300 K at 5 atm if the entropy change is 8.2127 e.u. Use C v=7.88 cal/mol/K.

7. Hydrogen, initially at 15psia and 80˚F, is compressed at the rate of 20cfm in

a hot environment to a pressure of 75.3psig. The details of the process are
unknown but it is estimated that heat enters at the rate of 20BTU/min. For a
change in entropy of 0.0268BTU/min-R, determine the final temperature.

8. For a certain reaction, So298.2K = -59.20 eu, and:

−3
3.985 × 105
𝑑𝐶𝑝 = −7.58 + 17.42 × 10 𝑇 −
𝑇2
Find from these data S of the reaction at 400 K.

9. When 1mol C6H12O6 (glucose) is oxidized to carbon dioxide and water at

25°C according to the equation C6H12O6(s) + 6O2(g) → 6CO2(g) + 6H2O(l),
calorimetric measurements give ∆U=−2808kJ/mol and ∆S=+182.4J/K-mol
at 25°C. How much of this energy change can be extracted as
a. heat at constant pressure,
b. work?

10. How much energy is available for sustaining muscular and nervous activity
from the combustion of 1mol of glucose molecules under standard
conditions at 37°C (blood temperature)? The standard entropy of reaction is
+182.4J/K-mol.
11. Ethanol may be treated as an incompressible fluid at an appreciable pressure
range. If the pressure is changed from 1bar to 3bar at 350K, what is the
change in the Gibbs free energy in J/g? The density of ethanol at this
temperature is 800kg/m3.

12. Determine if the combustion of CH4 is spontaneous or not at 298.15K by

determining ΔG.
Component ΔH (J/mol) ΔS (J/mol-K)
CH4 -74.81 0.186
O2 0 0.205
CO2 -393.51 0214
H2O -285.83 0.07

13. Determine if the decomposition of NH3 is spontaneous or not at 298.15K by

determining ΔG.
Component ΔH (J/mol) ΔS (J/mol-K)
NH3 -46.11 0.193
N2 0 0.192
H2 0 0.131

14. A mixture of 11.02mmol of H2S and 5.48mmol of CH4 was placed in an

empty container along with a Pt catalyst, and the equilibrium
H2S(g)+CH4(g)↔H2(g)+CS2(g) was established at 700˚C and 762torr. The
reaction mixture was removed from the catalyst and rapidly cooled to room
temperature, where the forward and reverse rates of reaction are negligible.
