MQC Report New 1

This report summarizes measurements taken of features on a motorcycle chain using a vernier caliper. Five students each took five measurements of five features: length of pin, diameter of pin, outer diameter of eye, thickness of eye, and outer diameter of spacer. The features were the length of pin (mean 20.864 mm), diameter of pin (mean 4.764 mm), outer diameter of eye (mean 12.542 mm), thickness of eye (mean 1.984 mm), and outer diameter of spacer (mean 9.836 mm). Alternative advanced tools suggested for measuring the features included a micrometer and outside spring caliper. Graphs including bar charts and pie charts were created from the measurement data in Excel.

Introduction
Metrology is a science of measurement. Metrology may be divided
depending upon the quantity under consideration into: metrology of length,
metrology of time etc. Depending upon the field of application it is divided
into industrial metrology, medical metrology etc. Engineering metrology is
restricted to the measurement of length, angles and other quantities which are
expressed in linear or angular terms.

Problem Statement
Select a component from the project lab of our college and identify any of
its 5 potential features. Identify the instrument to measure the feature with LC
calculation. Every student must measure every feature,5 times. Prepare an excel
sheet of the data. Also suggest an alternate advanced tool to measure the same
features. Use the above data and draw the bra- chart and pie- chart using excel.
Prepare the report and presentation.

Theory Component Selected - Motor Cycle Chain

Motorcycles are high-speed applications that operate in tough
conditions—rain, dirt, sand, and high shock loads. These specially developed
chains are used as the part of the drive train to transmit the motor power to the
back wheel

Methodology

A) Vernier Caliper:

Vernier caliper, instrument for making very accurate linear measurements

introduced in 1631 by Pierre Vernier of France. It uses two graduated scales: a
main scale similar to that on a ruler and an especially graduated auxiliary scale,
the vernier, that slides parallel to the main scale and enables readings to be
made to a fraction of a division on the main scale. Vernier calipers are widely
used in scientific laboratories and in manufacturing for quality control
measurements.
A vernier caliper is defined as, a measuring device that is used for the
measurement of linear dimensions. It is also used for the measurement of
diameters of round objects with the help of the measuring jaws.

Least count of vernier caliper=Least division on main scale/Total no of division

on vernier scale

Least count of vernier calliper = 0.02mm

Total Reading=Main scale reading + (Least Count *Matching Vernier scale)

B) Steel Rule:

A steel rule is exactly what it sounds like a rule manufactured from either
spring or stainless steel that feature either meter imperial (or both) scales along
its length. One end is usually flat whilst the other end (frequently including a
hole for usually round.
Steel rules can come in either flexible or rigid forms and in a variety of
thicknesses and lengths. The most commonly purchase lengths are 150mm
(15cm), 300mm (30cm), 600mm (60cm) and 1,000mm. However, whilst we
might not advertise them our website, we can also source professional quality
rulers right up to 6m in length.
