BCS Tut Questions

The document provides specifications for several optical communication systems and components and asks the reader to analyze them by calculating: 1) The maximum transmission distances of two systems operating at different wavelengths based on their power budgets. 2) Which receiver type should be used for a 5 km link based on their sensitivity requirements. 3) The total channel loss for a 4 km link given component losses. It then asks the reader to analyze several optical fiber links by calculating their maximum bit rates based on rise time budgets and determining the maximum distance for a 1 GHz system based on both its power and rise time budgets.

Broadband Communication system

Optical Link Design Worksheet

1. Make a graphical comparison and a spreadsheet calculation of the maximum
attenuation limited transmission distance of the following two systems operating at
100Mbps:
System 1 operating at 850nm
a)GaAlAs laser diode:0dBm(1mW) fiber coupled power
b)Silicon Avalanche Photodiode : 50dBm
c)Graded Index Fiber:3.5 dB/km attenuation at 850 nm
d)Connector Loss :1 dB/Connector

System 2 operating at 1300 nm
a)InGaAsP LED :  13dBm(1mW) fiber coupled power
b)InGaAs pin Photodiode: 38dBm
c)Graded Index Fiber:1.5 dB/km attenuation at 1300 nm
d)Connector Loss :1 dB/Connector

Allow a 6dB system operating margin in each case.

2. An Engineer has the following components available :

(a)GaAlAs laser diode operating at 850 nm and capable of coupling  1mW (0dBm)
into a fiber.
(b)Ten sections of cable  each  of which  is 500m long, has a 4 dB/km attenuation,
and has connectors on both ends.
(c)Connector loss of 2 dB/connector
(d)A pin photo diode receiver .
Using these components, the engineer wishes to construct a 5 km link operating at
20Mbps. If the sensetivities of the pin and APD receivers are  45 and 56dBm,
respectively, which receiver should be used if a 6dB system operating margin
is required?

3. An optical fiber link of length 4 km comprises a fiber cable with an attenuation of
5dB/km. The splice losses for the link are estimated at 2dB/km, and the connector
losses at the source and detector are 3.5 and 2.5 dB respectively. Ignoring the effe
cts of dispersion on the link determines the total channel loss.

Power Budget Analysis:
4. An optical fiber system is to be designed to operate over an 8 km length without
repeaters. The rise times of the chosen components are:

Component  Parameters

Source (LED) 8 ns

Fiber intermodal 5 ns km–1

Intramodal(pulse broadening) 1 ns km–1

Detector (p–i–n photodiode) 6 ns

From system rise time considerations, estimate the maximum bit rate that
may be achieved on the link when using an NRZ format.

Rise Time Budget:

Tsys Calculation

Tb  in terms of Tsysfor NRZ Format

Calculation of maximum Data rate

5. For a digital link using optical fiber of 6 km link
Components Rise time

LED with its driver circuit 15ns

Material dispersion related rise  time 21 ns
degradation

Model dispersion induced fiber 3.9 nsec

Receiver rise time degradation   14 nsec

Assuming that receiver has 25MHz bandwidth, calculate link rise  time.

Rise Time Budget :

Tsys Calculation

Link Rise Time :
6. For a typical parameter for a link.
Data rate = 1 GHz.
DFB Laser spectral width = 0.1nm
 SM fiber dispersion at 1550nm = 20 ps/km/nm = 0.02 ns/km/nm
Rise time of the receiver = 0.1 nsec
Rise time of the transmitter = 0.1nsec
Fiber loss = 0.4dB/km
Transmitter power 3 dBm
Min Detectable power 40 dBm(Neglect splice and connector losses.)

Calculate the Maximum distance to which the communication can be done using the
above values (using both rise time and power budget analysis )

  Power Budget Analysis:

LPTmax =
(SNR becomes ___________(acceptable /unacceptable )beyond this distance

Rise Time Budget :

LRTmax =

Distortion becomes____________(acceptable /unacceptable )beyond this distance

So, for the above condition the Distance to which communication can be done (wit
hout  repeater or amplifier ) is________
