CHAPTER 3

UNDERSTANDING MULTILINGUALISM

Reflection:
This chapter gives emphasis on multilingualism. Contents in this chapter includes the
definition of multilingualism itself and its effect to educational context. Here, it says
that multilingualism is the condition of being able to speak more than one language
thus, when a person or group of people know how to speak two or three languages
then they are considered as "multilingual". Reflecting on this topic I could say that
Multilingualism is very helpful when it comes to communication for the reason that ,
as you learn new language it expands your mind and worldview. It opens you up to
new cultures and to the fruits of diversity. When you are able to speak second or
third language it will boost your confidence and increase self-esteem. So do I, well
I can also consider myself as multilingual individual because I can speak not just one
language, I could speak Kamayo which is my native language, Bisaya, Tagalog which
is our official language, and English as a universal language. This brings me honor to
myself as I can't only use one language in communicating but I could be able to do a
code-switching whenever the person I talked to cannot understand my native
language.

On the other hand, multilingualism also has a good impact on educational setting
where it helps the teachers to easily use medium of instruction that is preferable to
the students. However teacher must also know students' cultural background first
before deciding on the language to be used as a medium of instruction. Instances
that may arise in this area is that maybe not all students have the same mother
tounge language used that is why is it also challenging for teacher to utilize a mother
tounge that is commonly spoken by all the Learners. In reflection to myself as well, I
know that sooner or later I will be a teacher carrying those responsibilities that
teacher must do. It is inevitable that I wil be assigned to remote or far flung areas
where most of the students have their own mother tounge or native language that is
used. I could say that I really need to master their own native language as well
because as a teacher of course you will be the one who instructs or give directions to
students specially those grades 1up to 3. It is your job to effectively relay the
information as clearl as a water. If you are not proficient enough with their
respective native language there will be a big possiblity that you cannot give them a
proper instruction that would lead students to have a poor understanding on the
content of the lesson.

Consequently, understanding multilingualism allows you to be knowledgeable in

differen things and in different ways you can do code -switching when needed, you
can immediately use the language use know in a place that where people spoke the
same. And also in terms of educating learners as future teacher you must know first
the language that most of your students speak so that you and your students could
have a smooth-sailing conversation within the teaching and learning process.

CHAPTER 4

LANGUAGE ACQUISITION

Reflection:

"Innate means existing from the time a person or animal is born. Something innate is
inherent and not learned". This chapter gives emphasis on innate ability of human to
acquire language. Chomsky proposed the concept of the LAD to help explain how
children are able to use the basic structures of language, even though they rarely
receive instruction on how to speak their native language. This LAD or Language
Acquisition Device he is referring to is the device that human acquires language
without consciously learning it . He originally suggested that the LAD contained
specific knowledge that is key to understanding the rules of language.

Among the subtopics outlined in this chapter, this particular content has
amazingly caught my attention. Even before I never thought about this theory
proposed by Noam Chomsky ,and about the device he is talking. All my life I only
believe that language is learned because it is really taught. I was just amazed on
how language was gradually developed
