Introduction
A. Background of the study

As a subset of online discourse, social media has exploded, attracting a prodigious

amount of content creation, sharing, bookmarking, and networking activity. Social media is

rapidly altering societal discourse due to its accessibility, speed, and reach as well as setting

trends and priorities in a variety of fields, including politics, technology, and the

entertainment industry (Asur and Huberman, 2010). Thanks to the development of social

media over the past ten years, young people are now able to exchange ideas, emotions,

personal information, pictures, and videos at a truly astounding rate. American teens who are

online now use social media websites in a percentage of 73%. (Oberst, 2010).

Today, the Internet has firmly established itself in people's lives. It's difficult to

imagine a young man who didn't check social media for updates and read the newspaper at

least once a day. The modern world requires us to stay connected and up to date on the latest

news and trends. Does this, however, have an impact on student performance? When social

media platforms like Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter first appeared, our world was divided

into online and offline realms. Social media are online technology platforms that help to

bring people together from all over the world. It is used to foster interpersonal relationships.

We can do it with their assistance. Communicate with each other, even if they are on different

continents, listen to music, read books, look at photos, and do a variety of other activities.

Social media has greatly simplified our lives while also keeping us tightly connected to

ourselves. During the time spent finding individuals for acquaintances, children enter various

connections and have the opportunity to speak with a relatively boundless number of
individuals and premium gatherings, with a wide range of identities, take in a significant

amount of stories, trade suppositions, and talk about issues important to them.

As a result, the majority of social network users are from the younger generation.

According to researchers, social media is especially dangerous for teenagers because it gives

them the false impression that love and friendship are easy to conquer and equally easy to

destroy. Furthermore, for young people who are accustomed to the fast-paced pace of Internet

life, the truth may be revealed. Appear to be excessively dull, and they can have a go at,

making it impossible to "restore" it by engaging in irresponsible behavior. Some support the

use of social media. They claim that the latter allow students to gain access to knowledge and

exchange information quickly. Others believe that students use social media primarily to

communicate about things other than their studies and that it only serves to divert them from

their studies. Students' use of social media contributes to have quick access to fundamental

knowledge.

Access to social networks is restricted inside many universities and schools around

the world. They defend this by assisting students in maintaining focus on their studies. On the

other hand, they prevent students from accessing the wealth of information on these

resources, including YouTube's scientific videos. How many people actually use social media

in the Philippines? There were a startling 76.01 million active social media users as of

January 2022. Filipinos between the ages of 25 and 34 made up the largest percentage of

these, 16.4%. The Philippines had 111.8 million people living there as of the beginning of the

year. Even though 5.9% of people 65 and older may seem insignificant to you, it actually

represents more than 6.5 million senior citizens on social media! When that mahjong meetup

is just an Instagram DM away, getting the percentages of male and female social media users,
50.2% and 49.8%, are relatively close to one another. As for the majority of social media

users, 52% of them live in rural areas compared to 48% in urban areas, which represents a

small share of the pie. Your cell phone is an extension of who you are and how you connect

to the world, regardless of who you are or your socioeconomic status. Outside of business,

35% of Tiktok users claim that the platform's short-form content has discouraged them from

watching more traditional media from streaming services like Netflix. Since TV shows now

take up much more time, watching them requires more effort than simply opening an app to

watch a few interesting, 7-second videos. Though self-awareness is also a byproduct of this,

as 43% of Gen Z users claim that this type of content has a negative impact on their overall

media consumption. In other words, it has the potential to be a productivity killer and an

uncontrollable addiction. However, 6% more social media users claim that they have learned

more from scrolling social media platforms than from going to school. This is where social

media can turn into a two-edged sword that, in the wrong hands, can be deadly.

Unfortunately, in the Philippines, targeted advertising has the same power to persuade

someone to buy a $600 Dyson hairbrush as it does to persuade millions of people to vote for a

candidate who will not admit to violating human rights.

Student use of social networking websites and apps is widespread. As part of their

daily lives, they spend a significant amount of time on these websites. According to studies,

university students use social networking sites more than students of other age groups (Azizi

et al., 2019). The importance of social networking sites in education cannot be overstated. In

fact, by interacting with learning communities and other educational systems, students have

numerous opportunities to enhance their academic performance and gain access to the most

recent information (Greenhow and Robelia, 2009). Students can connect with various people

and exchange information that way as well. This might improve the results of students'

teaching (Yu et al., 2010). Students' mental health, which includes their emotional,
psychological, and social wellbeing, is also impacted by social media. It can be argued that

social media plays a significant role in the daily lives of university students because they

frequently use it both during the day and at night. Nevertheless, despite the enormous

contributions these technologies have made to knowledge acquisition, it is important to assess

whether they are being employed for learning-related purposes or for other activities that

might result in technology misuse.

In closing, Both Martn, (2008) and Lusk, (2010) discuss social media from the same

perspective. For them, social media refers to the use of websites like Facebook, Blogs,

Twitter, My Space, and LinkedIn for communication purposes, as well as the sharing of

photos and videos. However, for the purposes of this study, social media is defined as the

internet use for communication, idea sharing, and the sharing of photos and videos by users

through Facebook, WhatsApp, Twitter, Skype, Myspace, and Yahoo Messenger. Over the

past few years, the increased use of social networking sites has spread across the globe. What

was once a hobby for some computer-savvy individuals has evolved into a global social norm

and way of life (Boyd. 2007). Social networking websites give users tools for

communication, information sharing, and forming new connections. As we adjust to our

increasingly technological world, social interaction is impacted in numerous ways as the

popularity of social networking websites rises. The way people communicate and interact

online has changed and is still changing. These users now interact socially online, which

detracts from more traditional forms of interaction. Social networking sites have changed

how we interact with each other in person, how we receive information, and how our

friendships and social groups function (Asur and Huberman, 2010).

B. Statement of the Problem

The use of social media is prevalent and has the largest number of members than any

other online platform available on the internet. Members of all age groups use social media

platforms according to their needs. This study aims to investigate the impact of social media

usage on the academic performance of students in Sto. Nino Mactan Montessori School.

Specifically it seeks to answer the following questions;

1. Why students use social media in terms of;

1.1 Conversation;

1.2 To gain information;

1.3 Learning;

1.4 Content for themselves?

2. How much/long do students spend using social media in terms of;

2.1 Time;

2.2 Money;

3. What is the impact of social media to students in terms of;

3.1 Academic performance

3.2 Education

4. What are the social factors that cause the students to get addicted to social media

platforms that result to habitual absenteeism and poor/rich academic performance in

terms of;

4.1 Attitude towards study

4.2 Family involvement and concern

4.3 Peer pressure

C. Significance of the Study

The internet has become a cutting-edge medium for people and students to

communicate through social networks as a result of recent advancements in technology.

Social media has given rise to an online phenomenon that has gained popularity in recent

days. Students establish and maintain relationships with teachers and peers using social

media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Tiktok. These social media platforms

enable users to connect with other site members while also allowing them to create individual

profiles. Users can post pictures, describe their academic activities and classroom activities,

and send private or public messages to anyone they choose. The use of social media appears

to be increasing in this "information age." especially among schoolchildren, quickly. The

topic of using social media in the classroom has generated debate for a number of years.

Many parents and teachers are concerned about the effects of allowing social media in the

classroom. Social media enables teachers to maintain connections with both current and

former students, both on and off campus. Teachers use social media as a method of

instruction by setting up groups and accounts where students can access the material.

Teachers can collaborate on ideas and direct students to Facebook and LinkedIn. Students can

tag their academic posts with hashtags that teachers create, and viewers can view submissions

to see the group's creative output. Though parents are worried about students’ continuous use

of the social media sites, many students continue to utilize these sites on a daily basis. It is

against this background that this study is being conducted to find out the impact of students’

use of social media on their academic work. Social Media is becoming more popular among

school students and is a new way of spending free time and serves as a separate channel for

finding the necessary information, both educational and entertaining. Therefore, it is

necessary to examine the effect of social media on students’ academic performance, in

particular, how the use of social networks for academic purposes.

Social networks are becoming more popular among university students and are a new

way of spending free time and serve as a separate channel for finding the necessary

information, both educational and entertaining. Therefore, it is urgent to examine the question

of what effect social networks have on their users, in particular, how the use of social

networks affects the academic success of students. This study will discover this information,

giving the researchers an opportunity to explore and gain new knowledge. Furthermore, it can

be used for future studies. The findings of this study benefit the following:

The government agencies that focus on the Social media platforms usage.

The study also benefits the government, it is the high demand of the social media

industry, and the results of the study could be a significant element of the government’s

intervention.

D. Related Studies

According to Junco al et (2010), social media are a gaggle of internet websites,

services, and practices that support collaboration, community building, participation, and

sharing”. The growing dimension of the utilization of social media among the youth of today

can't be over emphasized. Over the years, social networking among second cycle students has

become more and more popular. It is how to form connection not only on campus, but with

friends outside of faculty. Social networking may be a way that helps many of us feels as if

they belong to a community. Due to the increased popularity of it, economists and professors

are questioning whether grades of scholars aren't being suffering from what proportion time

is spend on these sites (Choney, 2010). According to Lenhart et al., (2010), about 57% of

social network users are 18-29 years old and have a private profile on multiple social media

websites. In a study by Pempek, Yermolayeva, and Calvert (2009), the quantity of your time

spent daily on social network sites varied greatly. However, an analysis of the info indicated

most participants spent approximately thirty minutes a day socializing, mostly during the

evening hours between 9p.m to 12a.m students spent a mean of forty seven minutes a day on

Facebook. More than 50% of school students continue a social networking sites several times

each day (Sheldon, 2008). Quan-Haase and Young (2010), found that 82% of school students

reported logging into Facebook several times each day. Younger students attended use

Facebook more frequently than older students to stay in-tuned with friends from high school

or from their hometown (Pempek et al., 2009).

Many researchers like Choney (2010), San Miguel (2009) and Enriquez (2010)

studies on students’ use of the social media sites revealed a negative effect of the use of

social media sites on students’ academic performance. Nielsen Media Research study
conducted in June 2010 stated that nearly 25% of students’ time on the web is spent on social

networking sites (Jacobsen & Forste 2011).The American Educational Research Association

conducted a search and declared at its annual conference in San Diego California (2009), that

social media users study less and generate lower grade (Abaleta et al, 2014). San Miguel

(2009), focused on the connection between time spent on Facebook and therefore the

academic performance of scholars. The overall findings indicated “more time on Facebook

equals slightly lower grades”. In his study, the typical Facebook user had a GPA of three .0 to

3.5, while the non-Facebook user had a GPA of three .5 - 4.0. Also, the typical Facebook user

study for 1 – 5 hours per week, while the non-Facebook user would study 11 – 15 hours per

week Enriquez (2010), revealed that students who multi-task between social networking sites

and residential work are likely to possess 20% lower grades than a student who doesn't have a

social networking site.

He believes that even running a social networking site on the background on a

student’s PC while studying or doing homework could lower a student’s grade. He believes

that “the problem is that the majority people have Facebook or other social networking sites,

their e-mails and can be instant messaging constantly running within the background while

they are completing their tasks” Choney (2010), in watching the time spend on facebook and

its effect on academic performance said a user of Facebook has a mean “GPA of three .06,

while non users have a mean GPA of three .82”. Furthermore, a study conducted by

Karpinski and Duberstein (2009), of Ohio Dominican university on college students who use

social network have significantly lower mark averages (GPAs) than people who don't . They

also mentioned that among various unique distractions of each single generation, Facebook

remains a big distraction of current generation.

According to Khan (2009), facebook users often time experience poor performance

academically. Similarly, Englander et al., (2010), posit that social media is negatively related

to academic performance of student and may be a lot more momentous than its advantages.

According to Kubey et al., (2010), impairment of educational performance and internet

dependency are correlated by utilizing synchronous communication programme including

websites and forums. Jocabsen and Forste (2011), found a negative relationship between the

utilization of varied media, including mobile phones, and self-reported GPA among first year

university students within In Taiwan, Yen at el. (2009), identified an association between

mobile use and respondents and report that respondents have allowed phone use to interfere

with their academic activities. Similarly, Hong et al. (2012), reported that daily use of mobile

phones is correlated with self-reported measure of educational difficulty among a sample of

Taiwanese university students. In a survey of Spanish high school students Sanchez-Martinz

and Otero (2009), found a correlation between “intensive” mobile use and faculty failure.

However, other studies like Ahmed and Qazi (2011), Hanqittai and Hsich (2010), Pasek and

Hanqittai (2009), conducted on an equivalent topic revealed no correlation between social

media and students’ academic performance. A study conducted at Whittemore school of

Business and Economic on one thousand, 127 students revealed that there's no correlation

between what proportion time is spent on social networking sites and grades (Martin, 2009).

Again, University of latest Hampshire (2010) study also revealed that students’ use of social

media sites don't affect grades. A recent survey showed that approximately ninety percent of

teens within the us have Internet access, and about seventy-five percent of those teens use the

web quite once per day (Kist, 2008). This study also showed that approximately half all teens

who have Internet access also are members of social networking sites, and use the web to

form plans and socialize with friends (Kist, 2008). In September 2005, out of the entire adult
internet users (18-29 years) 16% were using social networking site but this percentage

increased to 86% in May, 2010

According to the results of the survey, it was found out that twenty-three (38.3%)

strongly agreed that social media has negative effect on their academic performance. It was

revealed on interview with the respondents that sometimes they don’t have time to make

assignment or study because they had long been on social media; seventeen (28.3%) did not

face such problem; twelve (20%) answered neutral; and eight (13.3%) revealed that they

don’t encounter any problem due to social media usage. In terms of positive effect of social

media, respondents revealed the following: ten (16.7%) strongly agree of the positive effect;

thirty-six (60%) agreed; thirteen (21.7%) claimed that it neutral neither positive nor negative;

and one (1.7%) disagree of the positive effect. Summing up, it turned out that the internet

occupies a specific place in the life of student respondents. Majority of the respondents

cannot leave their phone even during the class session. Majority of them performs homework

through the internet, watch the series every day, but it does not interfere with their

educational process. The primary motives for using social networks for them are the search

for friends, classmates and communication with them.

The time spent on informal organizations enables most respondents to compose their

own particular relaxation time, and in addition get ready for exams. Most students spend

around 20% of their time using social media. Almost half of those surveyed admit that using

the social network helped them in their personal lives and communicating with friends,

organizing leisure and in search of interest groups, some argue that social networks did not

affect their way of life in any way, and only a few acknowledged that social networks had

influenced on their free time, 10% caused addiction. Summing up, it should be noted that
social networks, becoming an integral part of the students’ full life, took up most of their free

time. Having superseded the methods for correspondence, they replaced the understudies'

leisure activities and verbal correspondence. The informal organization, and not the course

book and the instructor, moved toward becoming for them the main colleague in anticipation

of exams. Often the student does not have time to absorb the information received in the

lessons. After all, in the phone or tablet screen, there are things much more interesting -

correspondence with peers, news tapes, all kinds of social networks, and, of course, YouTube

videos. Also, all the free time a student can spend on the Internet. Instead of doing sports,

reading a book, chatting with their peers "live," preparing for lessons or just walking, he will

spend time on social networks. Of course, this negatively affects their physical and

intellectual development. Undoubtedly, in social networks, there are also things useful for the

development of the student - a lot of educational groups on Facebook and educational videos

from YouTube. In addition, communication with peers through social networks can help a

student socialize, find new friends, discuss with them issues related to studies.

A child can also unwind for a while and divert their attention from the monotonous

college schedule by using social media. The results show that social media has taken over the

student's entire life and consumes the majority of his free time. The respondents' time spent

on social media emphasized that it had a negative effect on their academic performance.

Therefore, the social media, also known as social networks or the web, picks students as

potential victims. Mobile phones and various computer technologies have greatly widened

the scope of both good and bad influences on the spiritual and intellectual growth of the

younger generation. Thus, it can be concluded that social media have a dual impact on

student achievement, and it is necessary to approach adolescents' use of social networks with

ultimate responsibility. In no case should we forget about the negative consequences that
excessive social infatuation could have. Based on the finding and conclusions drawn, the

following recommendations are hereby offered: Institutions should focus on making pleasant

things useful - promoting social networks as a tool not only for communication and

entertainment but also for learning. Social networks should allow their users to voluntarily

restrict attendance on certain days, for example, to students during a session. Finally, students

themselves must realize all the potential harm from excessive use of social networks, and

responsibly approach the learning process and academic results. (International Journal of

Advanced Information Technology (IJAIT) Vol. 8, No.4/5, October 2018)

Social media has becoming a great phenomenon to Y and Z generation, who is some

of them are college students. As one of the current communication medium, social media has

helped them in communicate quickly and effectively. However, the question arises whether

the excessive use of social media will give a negative impact to their academic performance.

In this research, we have conducted a survey to the 200 TATI University College

undergraduate students regarding their social media use and academic performance. The

study also explore for the most popular social media used among TATIUC students, their

opinions and other factors that lead to their negative impact of academic performance. The

survey have been analyzed to see the significant impacts of social media use to their

academic performance. The results show that there was a negative relationship between

social media usage and weak academic performance. According to Social Media Usage

(2017) others factor such as lack of time management was highlighted as the reason for weak

academic performance. Based on these findings, it can be used to propose the appropriate

methods for students in managing and balancing their time in social media without negatively

impact their academic achievement.

(Ajay Singh 2021) Nowadays, in the world of connecting learning, the impact of

social media on education is becoming a driving factor. The world is becoming smaller, and

by the use of technology such as social media, the way we get an education is changing.

Social media and education can complement one another if used effectively. Social media is

continually developing new educational possibilities for students. Social media has many

positive effects on education. But the same has some negative effects. Here know the many

positive and negative effects of social media on education. Social Media has become a vital

part of a student’s social life. It is now regarded as a learning platform that enhances student

engagement and capabilities in many schools. These platforms offer school children the

opportunity to connect, get in touch, access information and research. Social media is the

strongest medium of communication which helps people to connect from far places. Social

media’s acceptance in daily life is one of the driving forces behind these depending prospects

and how social media is changing education. Social networking sites and applications are

widely used by students. They spend a lot of their time on these sites as a part of their daily

lives. Studies revealed that among the various age groups of students, university students are

among the most using social networking (Azizi et al., 2019).

Social networking sites play a very important role in education. Indeed, students are

afforded multiple opportunities to improve learning and access the latest information by

connecting with learning groups and other educational systems (Greenhow and Robelia,

2009). Students can also exchange information by connecting with different individuals. This

can have a positive impact on student learning outcomes (Yu et al., 2010). Social media also

has an impact on student mental health; which refers to their emotional, psychological, and

social well-being. University students spend a lot of their time on social media both during

the day and at night, and it can be contended that such technologies play an important role in
their daily lives.

E. Survey Questionnaire

Recommendations

Based on the findings, the researchers made some recommendations as follows;

Students who have devices with internet access should be encouraged to use them to

supplement their library research rather than chatting with friends all the time. Students

should be advised to limit the amount of time they spend on social media sites per day and

instead use those hours to read novels and relevant academic books to expand their

knowledge. Since the study confirmed that the use of social media sites had affected the

academic performance of students negatively, there is the urgent need for the introduction of

students to the availability of novels and other information resource or materials in the library

that can help them academically. It is further recommended that students be advised during
orientation of the dangers of addiction to social networking sites. They should be introduced

to sites that can add values to their academic work and research.
