Unit Iv: Earth and Space Activity: Prepared: Gracie Ann M. Dy Lohb - Eed 16 Instructor

The document discusses the solar system and key topics about Earth. It provides details about the 8 planets in our solar system and their characteristics. It also discusses Earth's rotation and revolution, explaining why we have day and night and the different seasons. The phases of the moon are explained, noting the moon takes approximately 29.5 days to complete its cycle. Finally, various beliefs and practices associated with the moon throughout history are touched on.

UNIT IV: EARTH AND SPACE

ACTIVITY
Name: Bianca Celine R. Miranda Date: April 16, 2023
Section: BEED 3E

SOLAR SYSTEM
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w36yxLgwUOc
GUIDE QUESTIONS:
1. There are billions of galaxies in the universe. What is the name of the
galaxy where our solar system located?
 Milky Way Galaxy
2. What is the main source of light of all the planets?
 The sun
3. How many planets do we have in our solar system? Enumerate and
describe each.
 We have 8 planets. Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn,
Uranus, and Neptune.
 Mercury is the smallest planet in our solar system and nearest to
the Sun and is only slightly larger than Earth's Moon.
 Venus is the second planet from the Sun and is Earth’s closest
planetary neighbor. It’s one of the four inner, terrestrial (or rocky)
planets, and it’s often called Earth’s twin because it’s similar in
size and density. These are not identical twins, however – there are
radical differences between the two worlds.
 Earth Our home planet is the third planet from the Sun, and the
only place we know of so far that’s inhabited by living things and is
the fifth largest planet in the solar system.
 Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun and is one of the most
explored bodies in our solar system.
 Jupiter is Fifth in line from the Sun, Jupiter is, by far, the largest
planet in the solar system – more than twice as massive as all the
other planets combined.
 Saturn is the sixth planet from the Sun and the second-largest
planet in our solar system and is adorned with thousands of
beautiful ringlets
 Uranus is the seventh planet from the Sun, and has the third-
largest diameter in our solar system. It was the first planet found
with the aid of a telescope.

 Neptune is the only planet in our solar system not visible to the
naked eye and the first predicted by mathematics before its
discovery
4. It is considered as “the hottest planet” in the solar system? Explain why.
 Venus' thick atmosphere traps heat, causing a greenhouse effect
that causes it to become the hottest planet in our solar system,
with surface temperatures hot enough to melt lead.
5. How many moons does Jupiter have? Enumerate.
 By most counts, Jupiter has between 80 and 95 moons, but
neither number captures the complexity of the Jovian system of
moons, rings and asteroids. Jupiter's four largest moons were Io,
Europa, Ganymede, Callisto.
6. How many frozen moons can be found around Saturn? From among the
moons of Saturn, what is considered as the largest moon?
 Saturn has approximately 150 moons, the largest of which is
known as Titan.
7. It is considered as the “coldest planet. Explain why.
 Despite its close proximity to the sun, Uranus has the coldest
atmosphere of any planet in the solar system. This is because
Uranus lacks internal heat, which helps to supplement the heat
from the sun.
8. It is considered as the “Ice Giant”. Explain why.
 Uranus and Neptune are known as ice giants because they are
smaller and have a different composition than Jupiter and Saturn,
which are gas giants.
9. Enumerate the 5 dwarf planets in our solar system.
 Ceres, Pluto, Makemake, Haumea, and Eris are the five most well-
known dwarf planets.
EARTH’S ROTATION and REVOLUTION
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6SzjlsuyTdk&t=331s
GUIDE QUESTIONS:
1. What is the difference between rotation and revolution? Explain.
 The term "revolution" refers to an object's orbital motion around
another object, whereas "rotation" refers to the object's spinning
motion about its own axis.
2. Why do we have day and night? Explain.
 The earth revolves around the sun and rotates on its own axis. The
rotation of the earth causes day and night. The day takes place in

LOHB – EED 16 INSTRUCTOR
the part of the earth that faces the sun, while the night takes place
in the part of the earth that does not face the sun.
3. Why the Earth is tilted? Is there a significance importance? Explain.
 The spin axis of the Earth is tilted in relation to its orbital plane.
The seasons are determined by this. When the earth's axis points
toward the sun, it is summer in that hemisphere.
4. Why do we have different seasons? It is related to Earth’s movement.
 The spin axis of the Earth is tilted with respect to its orbital plane.
This is what gives rise to the seasons.
5. Do you believe that humans have made changes in the Earth’s rotation
period? Explain.
 Yes, even if people are unaware of the world's rotation, it continues
to change, develop knowledge, allow, and create things related to
living in this world.
PHASES OF THE MOON
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQvo7vyCmuE
1. What are the different phases of the moon? Explain.
 These eight phases are, in order, new Moon, waxing crescent, first
quarter, waxing gibbous, full Moon, waning gibbous, third quarter,
and waning crescent. The cycle occurs once a month (every 29.5
days).
2. How many days does the moon takes to finish it’s journey?
 Our Moon takes approximately 29.5 days to complete one cycle of
phases (from new Moon to new Moon). This is known as the
synodic month.
BELIEFS and PRACTICES
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1np2r0hKru8
1. What are the different beliefs and practices people associate with the
moon?
 Themes and beliefs. The moon's waxing and waning have made it a
universal symbol of time, change, and recurring cycles. One such
cycle is the constant alternation of birth and death, creation and
destruction. For centuries, the moon has been associated with
both birth and death.
2. How about you? Do you have different beliefs and practices associated
with the moon? Share it with us.
 Yes I have, there’s always a saying that when it’s full moon the
witches will become more powerful.
