Assignment I

This document contains an assignment for a pavement material design and analysis course. It includes 9 questions related to analyzing stresses and strains in pavement structures with different layer configurations and material properties. Students are asked to determine stresses, strains, elastic moduli, and pavement thickness required to support given loads. They must also calculate traffic load factors and cumulative equivalent standard axles using provided traffic data.

Pavement Material Design and Analysis CTMG 4202

Assignment I 2015 EC 2nd Sem. (2022/23)
Submission Date: - On Mid-Exam Date
(Make a group of 2 students)

1. For a homogenous half space subjected to two circular loads shown below, it
is the pavement structure for full depth asphalt road segment. For the
specific point A which is located at the center of left wheel at a depth of
30cm determine, use Foster and Ahlvin.
a) The vertical stress,
b) Shear stress,
c) Radial stress.
d) Tangential stress

2. For the three-layer system shown in the figure below with a= 120mm, q=
800Kpa, h1= 200mm, h2 = 100mm, E1 = 3Gpa, E2 = 150Mpa, and E3 = 75Mpa,
determine all the stresses and strains at the two interfaces on the axis of
symmetry.

3. A set of dual tiers has a total load 2Pd of 100KN, is observed in a flexible
pavement during maintenance pre survey .Determine the ESWL by Foster

4. A highway pavement structure consists of 15 cm full depth asphalt concrete

(E=3.75Gpa) and sub grade (E=150Gpa) is subjected to a load of 80KN on a
set of duals spaced at 36 cm on centers. The approximate contact is circular
Pressure is 142Kpa. Determine the ESWL by Equal vertical stress & equal
interface deflection. Use after Huang 1996 (Bosquieness stress distribution
approach).

5. A plate-loading test using a plate of 305mm diameter was performed on the

surface of the sub-grade. A total lead of 40kw was applied & a deflection of
2.54mmm was measured. Assuming that the sub-grade has a poison’s ration
of 0.3, determine the elastic modulus of the sub grade.

6. A circular load with a radius of 152mm and a uniform pressure of 552KPa is

applied on a two-layer system. The subgrade has an elastic modulus of 35MPa
and can support a maximum vertical stress of 55KPa. If the HMA has an

pavement? If a thin surface treatment in applied on a granular base with an
elastic modulus of173MPa, what is the thickness of the base course
required?

through a rigid plate 305mm in diameter. Layer 1 has a thickness of 203mm
and layer 2 has an elastic modulus of 44.2Mpa. Both layers are
incompressible with Poisson ratio of 0.5. If the deflection of the plate is
2.54mm, determine the elastic modulus of layer 1.

8. A road of pavement is subjected to the single axle loads shown in the table
below. Determine the cumulative ESA for a design period of 25 years using
TRL-RN31. For the traffic composition data given below determine the TF
for each vehicle class and cumulative ESA using TRL (ERA) method. The road
opens after two years from now.
