Experiment Number 6: Unit Weight of Fine and Coarse Aggregates

This experiment determined the unit weight of fine and coarse aggregates. Trials were conducted to find the mass of aggregates in a steel bucket. The unit weight was calculated based on the volume of the bucket. The average unit weight of fine aggregate was 16,815.024 N/m3 and coarse aggregate was 16,128.5 N/m3. The unit weight depends on factors like particle size and compaction. This experiment helps understand aggregate properties which are important for concrete mix design and quality control.

Unit weight is determined by how densely the aggregate is packed. It also

depends on the particle size, dispersion, and form if the particles are all the same size,
they can be sealed to a certain extent, but when smaller particles are added, the voids
are filled with them, and the unit weight rises. A coarse aggregate with a more
significant bulk density has fewer voids that must be filled by fine aggregate and cement.
As a result, unit weight is also affected by the degree of packing.

Because the degree of compaction in the lab and at the site may differ, the unit
weight calculated in this lab is not directly acceptable for the conversion of mass to
volume of the aggregates for the purpose of volume batching.

Discussion:

The dry loose unit weight of normal-weight aggregates ranges from 1120 to
1760 kg/m3. Aggregates consisting of both coarse and fine particles are called

combined or mixed aggregates. Natural mixed aggregates taken from the deposits and
used as they occur are called all-in aggregates or pit-run aggregates.

Significance:

The unit weight of aggregates, as determined by AASHTO T 19, is an important

aggregate property for fresh PCC. The unit weight (or dry rodded unit weight) is a
measure of the weight of a specific volume of graded aggregates and is used for
monitoring aggregate consistency and in the mix proportioning process

Conclusion:

Based on the results that we have obtained, we can conclude that we were able
to find out the unit weight of fine and coarse aggregate by following the compacted
condition of aggregates. Based on the results, we learned from this experiment that the
size of the particle, shape, moisture content, and, most importantly, compaction are all
features of aggregates that determine the unit weight. These aspects must be taken into
account in order to reduce errors that could affect the outcome.

We discovered several flaws in this experiment, including improperly compacting

the sample into the container, incorrect data calculations, and failure to account for
aggregate qualities. As a result, it is advised to follow the right approach and make as
many accurate calculations as feasible. We also learned from this experiment that the
higher the unit weight of the aggregates, the fewer the voids it has, and so the sample is
compacted more.

Application:

The experiment’s application in structural engineering is essential, the very idea

of setting a unit weight of normal-weight aggregates consists of both fine and coarse
aggregates. We can apply the knowledge that we learned in the experiment by
monitoring aggregate consistency and by measuring the weight of the specific volume
of graded aggregates. It is also applicable as a useful tool in determining concrete batch
yield and air content inside the concrete.
