Problem Set 5 (Feb 13 - Feb 17)

1) The document provides instructions for completing a lab problem set in Math 101 during the week of February 13-17. Students must show their work and solutions can be reviewed by another student for partial credit. 2) The problem set contains 3 problems - setting up integrals to calculate shaded areas under curves, calculating specific areas bounded by curves, and finding volumes of solids obtained by rotating regions. 3) The summary provides concise explanations of how to set up the integrals to solve each problem, including determining whether to use dx or dy integrals and the appropriate bounds of integration.

MATH 101 Lab Problem Set 5

Prepare for Labs the Week of Feb 13 - Feb 17

Your mark for this lab assignment has two components.

1. Completion of the assignment. Write out full solutions for the problems so that another student can
understand what you have done; the goal is to improve your written mathematical exposition. Your
solutions should be handed in at the beginning of your lab session to your lab TA.
Your lab TA will mark you on the degree of completion (not correctness) of the assignment.

2. Reviewing another student’s assignment. You must attend your lab section and review the as-
signment you are given by the lab TA. You will be marked for the helpfulness and quality of your
feedback.

You must participate in both of these components to receive full marks.

1. Set up integral expressions that calculate the shaded areas below. You have to determine whether it is
more appropriate to use a dx or a dy integral, which means you’ll also need to determine the variable
for each curve.

ii) The area bounded between f (x) = sin(x) and g(x) = on [0, ⇡]. Note that f (x) = g(x) on

[0, ⇡] when x = 0, ⇡/2.
iii) The area bounded between the curves x = 2y 2 and y 2 = x 4

3. Calculate the volume of the solid obtained by rotating the region bounded by y = x and y = x2 in
the second quadrant around the following axes.

i) The x-axis ii) The y-axis iii) The line y = 3
