1ST YEAR CHEMICAL ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY

Unit (Module) Description CPE 1002 Chemical Engineering Design Subjects Chemical Process Principles 1 Synopsis This course aims to develop knowledge and expertise in two key areas related to the process industry. It begins with an introduction to the structure of the chemical industry and number of issues associated with the choice of process routes and issues of sustainability. The remainder of the course is devoted to developing and applying methods used in carrying out material balances over a range of equipment and processes encountered in industry. The course covers the development of energy balances as applied to a wide range of chemical processes such as mixers, distillation columns, evaporators and reactors. The module also provides elementary techniques for the evaluation of vapor-liquid and liquid-liquid equilibria, and gives an introduction to the unit operation-distillation. The course covers two subject areas related to design: engineering drawing and simple structural mechanics. An introduction to the principles of representing three dimensional objects in two dimensions is given through a series of lectures and drawing exercises. Also, the range of drawing types, from block diagrams to technical detail drawings, are considered. In the mechanics element of the course, the background principles of mechanics are introduced. This leads to practical results that can be applied to mechanical design problems typical of process plant equipment, e.g. pressure vessels.

CPE 1003 Fluid Mechanics and Thermodynamics Subjects Fluid Mechanics Synopsis This unit introduces the fundamentals of fluid mechanics and heat transfer. It includes the properties of fluids, ideal flow and flow measurement, laminar and turbulent flow, boundary layer development and duct flow, and the principles of heat conduction and convection.

Chemical The material of this course is predominantly of an introductory nature, Engineering but within the time constraints of the course, a significant effort has Thermodynamics been made in illustrating applications of this material to problems in chemical engineering practice. Special emphasis is put on the First and Second Laws of thermodynamics, the P-V-T behaviour of real fluids,

equilibrium in chemical systems, phase rules, and determination of thermodynamic quantities. CPE 1004 Chemical Engineering Science Subjects Physical Chemistry Synopsis This unit will build on existing knowledge in chemistry and will introduce some key concepts for chemical engineers. The material will begin with the atomic and sub-atomic structure of molecules and will consider molecular and electronic interactions. This will lead to a description of real and ideal gases. An introduction to thermodynamics and thermochemistry will provide a base for future units. Chemical change will look at the kinetics of reactions in initial states and close to equilibrium. The subjects covered will receive a mathematical treatment appropriate to the level of the module. This unit is designed to provide the necessary basics of Physics and Biology for those students who have not studied the subject at A Level or equivalent. In the first part of the subject specific lectures and tutorials are provided in the basics of Physics (units and dimensions, statics, kinematics, electricity and energy) and Biology (e.g cell types and function, cell chemistry, proteins, genetic engineering) so that all students have the necessary base level in these subjects for further chemical engineering studies. At the end of the first part, all students are required to sit tests in both Biology and Physics. In the second part, students carry out a project in either the area of Physics or Biology.

CHM 155 Organic Chemistry AMT 157 Mathematics CPE 101 Applied Chemical Engineering Subjects Applied Chemical Engineering Synopsis This unit comprises all the experimental parts of the 1st year course. There is a lab component that comprise half the unit. This consists of triweekly lab sessions that the students complete and provide a written report. The project week takes place in the gap between 1st semester exams and the start of semester 2. Students go through a design exercise. EA1 is a week long project just before Easter in Semester 2. Engineer in society provides an exercise for students to consider the impact of industry on the environment and to practice making

presentations.
