MATH219-Course Syllabus and Policy 2022-2023 Spring

This document provides information about MATH 219 Introduction to Differential Equations, a 4-credit course offered in the spring 2023 semester. The course objectives are to classify different types of differential equations, explicitly solve important classes of ODEs, apply ideas from linear algebra to solve single and systems of linear ODEs, model physical phenomena using differential equations, use power series and Laplace transforms to solve equations, and use separation of variables to solve basic PDEs with Fourier series. The course will be taught synchronously online and cover topics like first order equations, higher order linear equations, series solutions, Laplace transforms, and partial differential equations. There will be two midterms and a final exam.

Catalog description: First order equations and various applications. Higher order linear differential equations.
Power series solutions. The Laplace transform. Solutions of initial value problems. Systems of linear differential
equations. Introduction to partial differential equations.

Course Objectives: By the end of this course, a student will:

• classify and identify different types of differential equations,

• explicitly solve several important classes of ordinary differential equations and interpret their qualitative
behaviour,
• apply ideas from linear algebra in order to solve single linear ordinary differential equations and systems
of such equations,
• model certain physical phenomena using differential equations and reinterpret their solutions physically,
• use power series methods to solve second order linear differential equations
• apply the Laplace transform for solving differential equations,
• use the method of separation of variables in order to solve some basic partial differential equations via
Fourier series.

(Only the e-mails sent to [email protected] will be answered.)

Course Assistant: Tunahan Yılmaz (Office: Z-48)

Course Website: http://ma219.math.metu.edu.tr/ and https://odtuclass.metu.edu.tr/

Communication policy: After classes start, we will use ODTÜClass for general news, announcements, and
sharing content. Thus, it is extremely important that you check your METU email and follow ODTÜClass
regularly.

Textbook: “Elementary Differential Equations and Boundary Value Problems”, Boyce, W. E., DiPrima, R. C.,
9th ed. or a higher edition.

Exams and Grading:

Midterm 1 : 30 % (15.04.2023 , Saturday)
Midterm 2 : 30 % (27.05.2023 , Saturday)
Final : 40 % (To be announced)
Total : 100

Attendance: Policy varies from section to section.

Suggested Problems: A list of suggested problems will be announced on the course website. Students are
encouraged to attempt to solve all of these problems in a timely manner, and ask the instructors about the ones
that they cannot solve.
Make-up Policy: In order to be eligible to enter a make-up examination for a missed examination, a student
should have a documented or verifiable, and officially acceptable excuse. A student cannot get make-up
examinations for two missed exams. The make-up examination for all exams will be after the final exam, and will
include all topics.
After the final exam, there will be a form on ODTÜClass and via that form, you will apply the make-up exam
instead of one missed exam and will send your reasonable excuse to [email protected].

NA Policy:

• If your two midterm scores add up to less than 30 points, (i.e., M1+M2 < 30) then you shall not be able
to take the final exam and get an NA grade.

• If you will take the makeup exam for one of the midterms and your score of the other midterm is less
than 15, then you shall not be able to take the final exam and get an NA grade.

• If you miss more than one midterm, then you shall not be able to take the final exam and get an NA
grade.

Lectures:

Until a further notice, we will do the lectures synchronized at the usual time over Zoom and Youtube.

IMPORTANT: The current ZOOM license allows a meeting with up to 300 participants.
In case the zoom capacity is full, you can attend the classes via Youtube.
