THE PROBLEM AND IT’S BACKGROUND

Introduction

The development of technology has affected our jobs, as well as how we socialize,

engage, learn, and perform, throughout the twenty-first century. The significance of

technology in today's environment cannot be overstated. People used to think that

technology will ultimately disappear, much like other things. Contrarily, information and

communication technology (ICT) has demonstrated that this is inaccurate since it

continuously improves, expands, and develops in several ways. In addition to other ways,

such as through promoting growth and development, this expansion and progression have

assisted mankind in continuing to make progress. Of course, the sector of education is

never exempt from the progress brought on by Technology.

According to Addy, Haiman and Luthra (2018.) Information and Communication

Technology (ICT) is made up of an extensive variety of hardware, software,

communication lines, and information management tools to handle and analyze

information. This states that Information and Communication Technology or known as

(ICT). It has evolved around our society from generation to generation from its

equipment and has helped us people to do several things from it. Also, education has

contributed a lot of ideas and made the impossible possible.

Various levels of generation through advancement of technology have evolved

through our society and impact over students in education. The importance of technology

in the modern environment cannot be overstated; in the past, people used to believe that,

like other things, technology would surely come goes. ICT (Information and

communication technology) has however shown otherwise as it continues to improve and

grow in a variety of ways in ICT skills on academic learning.

In addition, as claimed by UNESCO (2014), it improves student learning, assists

students in learning new skill sets, fosters social mobility, assists citizens in competing in

a global market, and so has a multiplier impact across the education system. Students now

have gained more knowledge and have sought related ICT skills to learn across different

fields in education. Moreover, to C. Karamti (2016), employing ICT improves

individualized and adaptable learning by moving the learning process from the lesson to

the students, hence facilitating and adjusting the classroom, educational institutions,

communities, and systems. Furthermore, each and other students can learn how to adapt

and ease the learning environment of ICT in the present.

With Information Technology there won't be much of an obstacle that we always

encounter when studying with we can improve our student’s life and enhance our

learning that could help us in a lot of ways.

Yushau and Nannim's (2018) assertion that IT enables and improves teaching and

learning through students; as a result, time and location are no longer barriers to

education. ICT also allows for more creative, informed, and logical thinking, as well as

higher productivity, effectiveness, and informative outcomes.

When students are computer literate and know how to incorporate ICT into the

curriculum, ICT can have an impact on student learning. Schools employ several ICT

technologies to communicate, generate, transfer, preserve, and manage information. It

strengthens the social and economic transformation of society and the economy. Students

now work in the field of information technology to improve their education in new ways.

It has improved the area of education's effectiveness.

This is consistent with GM Kumari's (2017) belief that ICT improves both the

technique of learning and behavioral targets, as well as predicting the outcomes of

teaching and learning in higher education institutions. Perhaps this is why ICT expertise

is so vital for students since they are a primary emphasis of higher education.

Information and communication technology utilization in the classroom can be

extremely important in developing fresh, cutting-edge ways to support teachers, students,

and the entire learning process. Both teaching and learning are supported by new

educational technology. Using digital learning tools like PCs, iPads, cellphones, and

smart digital whiteboards, technology has digitized classrooms.

Further to increasing student involvement and passion for studying, it has

enhanced course offerings. According to Bakare & Olaniyi, (2017), higher education

institutions should aim to holistically support the use of creative and new technologies to

improve teaching and learning, allowing students to equip themselves for an ideal world

and a tough environment. Technology integration in higher education institutions must be

embraced to assist the institutions' curricular aims for higher-quality education. This, of

course, is crucial for good ICT usage by researchers since it will promote the learning of

key skills needed by students in higher education to survive in this contemporary age and

sophisticated economy.

Understanding and using technology are both components of literacy. Literacy

skills are necessary for ICT talent in order for them to locate, use, and produce

information online in a useful and productive manner. Understanding literacy allows you

to use technology securely and helps you stay away from its risks.

Literacy in ICT or information is required to make effective use of these online

resources. Odede Israel and Enakerakpo Edesiri (2017) defined ICT talent as the capacity

to fully grasp and develop a wide range of abilities, including identifying, spotting,

assessing, and effectively utilizing information. This might indicate that, in addition to

these core skills, the ability to question, communicate, and gather information is crucial.

ICT is used in schools for information management, communication, and creation.

Through methods like switching from chalkboards to interactive digital whiteboards,

utilizing students' personal smartphones or other devices for learning during class time,

and having students watch lectures online at home while in class; ICT has sometimes also

become an essential part of the teaching-learning interaction. These methods can help

students develop higher order thinking skills, give them unique and imaginative ways to

communicate what they have learned, and better prepare them to deal with the rapid

technological change that is occurring in both society and the business.

According to UNESCO (2017), ICT promotes widespread access to education,

equity in education, the transfer of quality learning and instruction, the professional

development of teachers, and effective educational management, governance, and

administration. As a result, senior high school pupils can increase their learning via

correct and quality instruction.

Because resources have an impact on the abilities we acquire, students nowadays

often use resources that are nearby and being updated. The majority of students have

access to computers and the internet both at home and in their colleges, therefore they

have certain abilities such as knowledge of video games, social networking, e-mail,

Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, and internet searching and browsing. Siddiquah

According to Siddiquah and Salim's (2017) study, the majority of students have

access to computers and the internet both at home and in their colleges, therefore they

have certain abilities such as knowledge of video games, social networking, e-mail,

Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, and internet searching and browsing. On the

other hand, among these many abilities the pupils have, it is that they lack further

knowledge, including how to use an electronic library, participate in forums, and blog.

The lack of working utilities and infrastructure causes a major loss of instructional time,

which eventually has an impact on educational achievements. Nonetheless, despite the

widespread knowledge that school infrastructure is vital to a student's achievement, it is

conspicuously absent from many schools, particularly government institutions. The

infrastructure that schools have is quite important. When schools create conducive

settings for learning generally. Realistically, high-quality education is based on solid

infrastructure.

Adeosun (2013) conducted a study that was quite specific regarding the status of

things in school, as a perfect example. The researcher cited weak infrastructure as a key

difficulty impacting the complete adoption of ICT; extremely good internet connectivity,

proper and enough hardware, and other infrastructures are required for basic and high-

level ICT-enabled instructions. It is apparent that developed, developing, and

impoverished nations are not comparable in terms of computer access and usage; the gap

is astounding since underprivileged countries have fewer computers and usage than

developed and emerging countries.

The Learner Computer Ratio (LCR) refers to the ratio of students to computers

used for instructional purposes in a school system. Compared to emerging and developed

nations, where it is virtually a standard practice to create and distribute computers and

their facilities to educational institutions, it is almost unusual to see undeveloped

countries assist the use of computer facilities (UNESCO, 2014).

According to (Aduwa-Ogiegbaen & Iyamu) 2016, the electricity supply is also an

infrastructure that supports IT. This is critical since no computer can work without

electricity, yet this is a significant obstacle in a country dealing with an epileptic power

supply. As a result, effective information distribution necessitates effective

communication. Thus, as cited to UNESCO (2014), communication technology "may

comprise a cable connection that links terminal equipment to the telephone or other

telecommunication network or a narrowband or broadband fixed telephone line." These

obstacles are, of course, comparable to those identified by Siddiquah and Salim (2017),

which include: low processing speed of computers, signal problems when accessing the

Internet, malware threats, and poor performing conditions of computer systems, power

cuts, and lack of access to the internet. As a result, they proposed that the school make it

a point of duty by spending more resources on infrastructure improvements and providing

solutions to ICT-related concerns to enable students to learn more effectively.

The goal of the current study was to learn more about these emerging problems as

a result. Technology now plays an essential part in world society. Because it fosters

development, growth, and increases productivity and human resources,

Technology use is essential in many facets of life. In order to grow their economies,

infrastructure, and educational systems, developing or underdeveloped nations must use

Information systems. Information and communication technology is now essential for

every senior high school student who was expected to succeed in their studies.

Since, it is crucial to keep in mind that students must develop some fundamental

skills if they are to fully utilize ICT for learning. Without these skills, using ICT for

excellent learning is impossible. It seems that little to no attention is being paid to ICT in

the country's higher institutions of learning, despite the fact that ICT is crucial to student

learning, the education industry, and the overall well-being of any country ’s

development. These institutions are anticipated to generate educators or persons who

really can contend with their contemporaries in industrialized economies even while

driving their own economic growth.

Many research has been done to control this hazard, yet the problems still exist.

The usage of ICT skills on senior high students' academic achievement made this study

important since it aimed to assess their relationship.

Statement of the problem


The main objective of this quantitative study is to determine if a student's

academic achievement and the use of their ICT skills are related. The researchers

sought evidence of how students employ the use of ICT skills to their academic

achievement as selected senior high students. To be more specific, the researchers try to

provide answers to the following questions:

1. How may the respondents be describe, in terms of:


a. Sex
b. Strand

2. How may the respondents evaluate the used of ICT skills in terms of:

2.1 Knowledge of Word/Excel

2.2 Knowledge of PowerPoint

2.3 Knowledge of Search Engine

2.4 Knowledge of the Internet

3. Is there a gender difference in the ICT skills held by selected senior high students?

4. Is there a significant relationship of the Use of ICT Skills on the academic


achievement of selected senior high students?
Hypothesis
There is no significant relationship between the use of ICT skills on the
academic achievement of selected senior high students.

The figure illustrated above is the conceptual framework of the study, the independent

variable is the used of ICT skills the researchers will find out if the independent variable has

an impact with the dependent variable which is the academic achievements.

The main goal of this study is to assess the relationship between ICT skills and

academic achievement. The involved respondents here are Grade 11 selected senior high

students of Mary the Queen College of Pampanga. This study will investigate how students

will employ their different ICT skills, specifically knowledge in word and excel, power point,

search engine and internet.

This study will not be generalized to all the students in Mary the Queen College but

only to the selected respondents. Hence, this study will focus only on its main objective and

that is to know if there is a significant relationship between the two variables which is the

ICT skills and academic achievement of respondents of this study.

Significance of the Study

These results of this quantitative study will be significant and beneficial to the

following:

Students. Students can profit from this study since it encourages them to utilize

ICT skills in connection with their studies, not just for fun but also, to understand how

various ICT skills may contribute to their academic achievement.

Teachers. This study will help teachers that may organize their lectures and

course material, using this study in order to pass it on to the next generation. Also,

students will profit from the fundamental ICT abilities like problem-solving innovation.

By conducting their own research, the students will also be assisted in highlighting their

talents and learning more about their abilities..

Future Researchers. Future researchers can profit from this study since it gives

them a concept for a future personal research endeavor. In this instance, aspiring

researchers may now simply broaden their understanding of the use of ICT skills to

academic achievement. They can utilize all the information they acquired as the basis for

their research.

Scope and Delimitation

This study aims to determine the impact of ICT skills on academic achievement. It

examines the usage of ICT skills on academic achievement. The study was delimited to

the selected senior high students of Mary the Queen College Inc. Furthermore, the

Furthermore, the specific aspects that the researchers would like to look in at the

usage of ICT skills of students is delimited to knowledge of word/excel, knowledge

of power point, knowledge of search engine, knowledge of the internet. The respondents in

this study was randomly selected. Also, the researchers gave adapted standardized

questionnaires in person for them to be able to gather data. Lastly, the main objective of this

Study is to look for an answer, if there is a significant relationship is there significant

relationship between the use of ICT skills to the academic achievement of senior high

students.

Definition of Terms

The following terms are further defined either operationally or conceptually:

Excel. It offers a comprehensive tool for computing, evaluating, and presenting

numerical data in texts and charts of high quality. (Bijendra et al., 2023).

ICT. According to (Christensson, 2015) ICT is defined as the area of engineering that

enables the flow of information across telecommunication, including the Internet,

wireless systems, handheld devices, and other media formats.

Internet. Schools of higher learning are starting to embrace the internet as a tool to

improve students' academic performance, despite the fact that it may serve as a solid

fraction for a wide range of human activities. (Ngoumandjoka, 2013).

PowerPoint. A selection of material may be made with it, and slides can be formatted,

animated, and given musical accompaniment. (Dhrubnath, 2023).

Search Engine. A strategy for raising a website's chances of appearing on the first page

of search results. As users frequently provide a single phrase or keyword rather than the

complete website address when searching for information, a search engine utilizes a term

to find related internet sites and present them in a list, with the most relevant page at the

top. (Dushyant et al., 2019).

Word. As stated by (Dhrubnath, 2023) We may create many other types of papers with

the use of this program, including news stories, reports, theses, and drawings. Also, it

saves the document with the possibility to alter it to a later date.

Method

This chapter presents the research design, respondents, instrument, procedures, data

analysis, and ethical considerations used in the study.

Research Design

The researchers of this study will utilize the method of quantitative research to

seek answers to the given questions or problems. Hence, the data collected in this

research study are written numerically and analyzed through the statistical method.

According to (Kane et al., 2022) utilize scientific and statistical methods to develop and

test hypotheses and utilize data that were originally collected qualitatively, such as

interview data or open-ended questions in a questionnaire, by converting categories into

numerical data such as frequencies.

To attain the purpose of this survey, the researchers used descriptive and

correlational methods. As stated by Naraginti (2022), The methodology of descriptive

research design focuses on describing the traits of the population or phenomena under

study. The author went on to say that data collecting is a necessary component of

descriptive research since it allows for the testing of theories or questions about the topic

under investigation. As mentioned in the study of Seeram, E (2019), It is easier to

anticipate and explain the two variables using correlational research. To determine how

closely two or more variables are connected to one another, the correlation approach is

employed to measure the data.

A Descriptive Study

Respondents

The Grade 11 selected senior high students are the respondents of this study.

Following this, the researchers use stratified random sampling technique to select the

respondents of this study. As stated by Parsons (2017), stratified random sampling is

frequently employed in sample surveys, and the target population's constituent parts are

divided into several groups or strata, with those inside each stratum being similar in terms

of a few important survey-relevant characteristics. The respondents will be chosen at

random by the researchers using criteria that suit the particular features or characteristics

relevant to the study. Also, the researchers used stratified random sampling to avoid

human biases towards choosing the respondents needed in this study.

Instruments

The researchers used survey questionnaires to collect data. The respondent

received the questionnaires in person. The researchers modified standardized

questionnaires from the study "The Relevant ICT Skills for Effective Learning among

Undergraduate Students Questionnaire," which consists of 26 item questionnaires with a

4-likert scale: In terms of agreement or in disagreement (Totally disagree, disagree, agree,

totally agree). In addition, there is no need to refer this questionnaire toa content validity

and reliability check since it was modified from a validated studypaper.

Procedure

The researchers began drafting their statement of the problem as soon as the

standardized questionnaire was approved. After that, they wrote to the principal of

Mary the Queen College's Senior High Department to request permission to gather their

data in the above - mentioned school. After validation, the researchers began locating

their respondents. In order to choose their respondents, they used a random sampling

approach. The aim of the study and the confidentiality of the respondents' data were

explained to the chosen respondents on a consent sheet. The researchers provided them

with the survey questionnaire after getting their consent. The researchers start the data

analysis as soon as the required data were gathered, following that with the help of a

statistician, the obtained data will be evaluated, encoded, and analyzed.

Data Analysis

The data collected from the questionnaire was arranged, totaled, and tabulated.

The data were examined using the frequency distribution and percentage, weighted mean,

and T-test. In statistics, the quantity of data within a certain interval is displayed in a

frequency distribution, which might be a graph or table. (Young, 2020). Thus, frequency

distribution and percentage were used to characterize the respondents' demographic

profile, especially their gender. As stated by Ganti (2021), A technique known as a

weighted average takes the relative importance of the values in a data set into account.

Hence, a weighted mean was used to calculate the respondents' knowledge of ICT abilities

that are essential to academic achievement. Contrarily, according to Hayes (2020)

a t-test is an inferential statistic used to assess whether there is a significant

relationship between the means of two groups, which may be related uncertain aspects.

The researchers thus employed T-tests to investigate if there was a relationship between

respondents' ICT skills and academic achievement.

Ethical Consideration

The goal of this investigation was clearly disclosed to each participant in this

study. The study's methods that are being used. If the respondents feel they can't answer

the question or that it would hurt them, they have the option to withdraw participation in

the study without being compelled to. If so, the researchers will fully comprehend and

accept the respondents' choice. For the respondents' safety and privacy, their identities

will be kept secret, and all information obtained will be kept private.
