The Earth

The earth is composed of layers, including the crust, mantle, and core. The crust and upper mantle are broken into tectonic plates that move and interact along plate boundaries. There are three main types of plate boundaries: convergent where plates collide and form geologic activity, divergent where plates separate and new crust is created, and transform where plates slide past each other. Heat transfer within the mantle drives the movement of these plates via convection currents in the mantle.

The earth

GEOLOGY
> earth science comprising the study of Earth’s interior and composition.

GEO means “earth”

LOGIA means “study of”
THE MECHANISM OF PLATE TECTONICS
Convection -heat is transfer through steam or transfer of
PLATE TECTONICS heat through a fluid (liquid or gas) caused by molecular
motion
> The Earth is broken into large Plates.

> The size and position of Plates change.

Conduction - the transfer of heat or electric current from one
> Plate edges colliding - geologic activity substance to another by direct contact
> Creation and separation of continents
Radiation - energy that is radiated or transmitted in the form
of rays or waves or particles
The Layers of the
Earth’s interior Continental Crust
- the relatively thick part of the earth's crust that
CRUST forms the large landmasses

Oceanic Crust
> outermost layer of the earth - thin layer of rock separates the Earth's oceans
> the solid (land part/lithosphere) and thinnest outermost layer part of from the hot mantle beneath them
the Earth.

> made up of plates called as TECTONIC PLATES

MANTLE Upper Mantle

- the rocks in this layer are cool and brittle. Rocks
> second inner, thickest and the largest layer of the Earth’s interior in this layer are brittle enough to break under stress
> a layer between the crust and the outer core and produce

> Largest layer of the Earth Lower Mantle

- The rocks in this layer are hot and soft , Rocks are
CORE soft in this layer to easily subject to forces of
breaking.
> layer is very hot, very dense center of our planet.

> The ball-shaped core lies beneath the cool, brittle crust and the mostly-solid mantle

> It consists of the innermost layer(s) of the Earth; which may be composed of solid and liquid layers
Inner Core
> is the Earth's innermost part
> it has been believed to be primarily a solid ball

Outer Core
> is a fluid layer thick and composed of mostly iron and nickel
> Composed of super hot liquid substance called LAVA

Subduction plates sinks under the other, is a region of the Earth's crust where tectonic plates meet
Spreading ridge is the fracture zone along the ocean bottom where molten mantle material comes to the
surface, thus creating new crust

Convection Cell or Convective Flow

> This cycle is repeated over and over to generate what scientists call

Three Basic Types of Plate Boundaries

CONVERGENT BOUNDARIES Hotspot Boundary
- a boundary type that can be found
> plates that are moving towards to each other in the middle of plates or on the edges
> plates crash or crunch into each other.

DIVERGENT BOUNDARIES Boundaries

- is a limit or space between one layer to the other
> plates that are moving away to each other layer
“Other term
> plates come apart is DISCOTINUITY”

TRANSFORM BOUNDARIES
> plates that are moving away from each other

> where plates slide past each

MOHO DISCONTINUITY
- It is the boundary between the Earth's crust and the mantle

- Andrija Mohorocivic

GUTENBERG DISCONYINUITY
- It is the boundary that separates the mantle from the core

- Beno Gutenberg
