Assignment BL 1

The document contains 5 questions regarding boundary layer analysis of fluid flow over flat plates. Question 1 asks about the preferred velocity profile and calculations related to boundary layer parameters. Question 2 gives laminar and turbulent velocity profiles and asks for the ratio of boundary layer thickness to displacement thickness. Question 3 provides values to calculate boundary layer properties at a point on a flat plate. Question 4 presents a velocity profile and asks to show it satisfies boundary conditions and find a parameter. Question 5 asks about minimum plate length, transition location, and provides values to calculate them.

Assignment Boundary Layer Analysis - 1

Fluid Mechanics – II

Question 1
Given the choice between cosAy and sinAy as velocity profiles, which one would you
prefer? To determine the choice of the profile, find the displacement thickness,
momentum thickness, wall shear stress and boundary layer thickness, from the
momentum integral equation for flow over a flat plate.
Ans: sinAy, * = 0.363, ** = 0.137,w = U/2, /x = 4.8/(Rex)0.5

Question 2

U  
Ans: (/*)lam = 3/8, (/*)tur = 3/8,

Question 3
Water of kinematic viscosity  = 1.02 x 10-6 m2/s is flowing steadily over a smooth plate
at zero angle of attack with velocity 1.6 m/s. The length of the plate is 0.3 m. Calculate
(a) the thickness of the boundary layer at 15 cm from the leading edge (b) the rate of
growth of boundary layer at 15 cm from the leading edge and (c) the total drag
coefficient on one side of the plate. Assume velocity profile.
Ans:  = 1.7 mm, d/dx = 5.625 x 10-3, Cf (avg) = 1.935 x 10-3

Question 4
An approximate expression for the velocity profile in a steady state, 2D, incompressible
boundary layer is:
u   

Where   . Show that the profile satisfies the following boundary conditions:

At y = 0, u = 0 and at y = , u = U,   0 . Also, find out k from the appropriate
y y 2
boundary condition.
Ans: k   2 /   dU  / dx   1

Question 5
A low velocity wind tunnel is provided with air supply up to a speed of 50 m/s at 20oC.
One needs to study the behavior of boundary layer over a flat plate kept inside the wind
tunnel, up to a Reynolds number of Rex = 108. What is the minimum plate length that
should be used? At what distance from the leading edge would the transition occur if the
critical Reynolds number is Rex,c = 3.5 x 105? At 25oC,  of air is 15.7 x 10-6 m2/s.
Ans: x min = 31.4 m, xcr = 0.109 m
