LAS ISLAS FILIPINAS - means "The

Philippine Island"
SUCESOS DE LAS ISLAS FILIPINAS is
one of the most important works
depicting the Philippines during the
colonization of Spain, written and
published based on the experience
and observation by Antonio de Morga
in Mexico 1609.

LAS ISLAS FILIPINAS means "The

Philippine Island" in English and was
named in honor of King Philip II of
Spain.
ANtonio de morga Sánchez garay
Born in November 29, 1559 in Seville,
Spain.
Spanish soldier, lawyer, and a high-
ranking colonial official for 43 years, in
the Philippines, New Spain and Peru,
where he was the president of the Real
Audiencia for 20 years.
He wrote the first lay formal history of the
Philippines conquest by Spain.
A doctorate in canon law and civil law.
ANtonio de morga Sánchez garay
His history is valuable in that Morga had access to
the survivors of the earliest days of the colony and
he, himself, participated in many of the accounts
that he rendered.

The book Sucesos de Las Islas Filipinas narrates the

history of wars, intrigues, dipomacy and
evangelization of the Philippines in a somewhat
disjointed way. Modern historians (including Rizal)
have noted that Morga has a definite bias and
would often distort facts or even rely on invention to
fit his defense of the Spanish conquest.
Jose Rizal addresses his
introduction to the Filipinos.
Prompting an insight about the
in-depth overview of the
Philippine history throughout 300
years of colonization. Making a
call to his fellows about
recognizing the truth in the past.
Ferdinand Blumentritt has
encouraged Rizal to write about
the Philippines' pre-colonial
history.

Rizal's personal friendship with

Ferdinand Blumentritt provided
the inspiration for doing a new
edition of Morga's Sucesos.
FERDINAND BLUMENTRITT
MAIN OBJECTIVES OF RIZAL'S ANNOTATION
To awaken the consciousness of the
Filipinos regarding the glorious ways of the
past.
To correct what has been distorted about
the Philippines due to Spanish conquest.
To prove that Filipinos are civilized even
before the coming of the Spaniards.
WHAT IS SUCESOS DE LAS ISLAS FILIPINAS?

It is one of the important works in the early history

of the Spanish colonization of the Philippines,
published in Mexico in 1609 by Antonio de Morga.
Annotated by Jose Rizal with a prologue by Dr.
Ferdinand Blumentritt.
Documentation of events during the Spanish
colonial period of the Philippines as observed by
the author himself.
MAIN PROPOSITIONS OF RIZAL

The Philippines had its own culture before

Spanish colonization.
Filipinos were "decimated, demoralized,
exploite and ruined" by the Spanish
colonization.
The present state of the Philippines is not
necessarily superior to its past.
WHAT LEADS JOSE RIZAL TO SUCESOS DE LAS
ISLAS FILIPINAS?
Rizal was an earnest seeker of truth and this marked him
as a historian.
He had a burning desire to know exactly the conditions
of the Philippines when the Spaniards came ashore to
the Islands.
His theory was that the country was economically self-
sufficient and prosperous.
He believed that the conquest of the Spaniards
contributed in part to decline of the Philippines' rich
tradition and culture.
WHAT LEADS JOSE RIZAL TO SUCESOS DE LAS
ISLAS FILIPINAS?

He then decided to undertake the annotation of

Antonio de Morga's Sucesos De Las Islas Filipinas.
His personal friendship with Ferdinand Blumentritt
provided the inspiration for doing a new editon of
Morga's Sucesos.
Devoting four months research and writing and
almost a year to get his manuscript published in Paris
in January 1890.
In 1889-1890, Rizal spent several months in London to
do his historical research on pre-colonial Philippines
and to improve his mastery of the English language.
Having found Morga's book, Rizal laboriously hand-
copied the whole 351 pages of the Sucesos.
He sifted, weighted and evaluated each and every
proof he could find in books, manuscripts, documents
and other records from the vast British Museum's
Filipiniana Collection.

events of the past in the light of present standards.
