Abstract— Due to the depletion of non-renewable energy, conservation of energy has become
mandatory and by doing so we can reduce electricity bill as well. This Project ,Motion Sensor for
Security Light is designed to detect the motion in the room and put on the room light when there is
a motion. The project uses a PIR sensor to detect the motion and the analog and digital circuit to
put on the light for the particular duration of the time. The timer is used in mono-stable mode to
generate one shot trigger to drive the relay driver IC ULN2803 for a particular duration of time on
the basis of the function the relay in turn is drive to act as a high voltage switching switch to put on
the light. The 555 IC pin 3 maintains the high logic for the duration of the time and thus the light is
on for that duration. The output of 555 timers which is pin no 3 will be high or low according to
the motion senses by PIR sensor. Input of ULN2803 is connected to the pin no. 3 of 555 timer IC
and output of ULN2803 is taken in form of dc bulb through the relay which will be glow when
there will be any motion in the room.
Key words— PIR Sensor, ULN2803 IC, 555 Timer IC, Relay, Bulb
I. INTRODUCTION
Motion Sensor for security light by using PIR Sensor is a cost effective and a simple
system. It overcomes the problem to save energy, and create convenience, by adding motion
sensors to our lighting circuits. Maybe you want some notification of an intruder. Both can be done
with a PIR Motion sensor. When I walk into a room, the lights come on automatically, and when I
leave, shut off after a short period of time. You can choose how long that time delay is in the code.
No more fumbling for a light switch in the dark with my arms full of groceries! This is a low cost
efficient device and consumes low power input. I also wanted a override switch for times I want
the light to stay on,or off. So, I took an Arduino, added a PIR sensor, a SSR, a SPDT
switch, two 10k ohm resistors and whipped up a small sketch to glue it all together. This is a low
cost efficient device and consumes low power input. The first step was connecting a PIR sensor.A
PIR detects "motion" by recognizing an increase in Infra Red emission in the focus area, put out by
the human body. This project is small step towards achieveing that would’t it be great if you no
longer had to use a switch to turn on a lamp when you walk into a room or when you forget to tern
it off, it automatically turns itself off when you leave the room .you PIR stands for Passive
Infrared. PIR sensor consists of a fresnel lens, an infrared detector, and supporting detection
circuitry. The lens on the sensor focuses any infrared radiation/wavelengths present around it
towards the infrared detector. Our bodies generate infrared heat and as a result, this gets picked up
by the motion sensor. The sensor outputs a 5V signal for a period of one minute as soon as it
detects us.can even make a burglar alarm with a PIR sensor .
II. OVERVIEW OF DESIGN
The basic block diagram of the Motion sensor for security light by using PIR Sensor acts as
electricity and security purpose. The circuit diagram has been described below :

2.1 Power Supply

We have used +12V and +5V dc power supply. Step down transformer off 1 Amp, 230V,
50 Hz provides +12V ac supply. It provides required amount of voltage to components. +12V is
given to relay driver circuit.
2.2 Passive infrared Sensors(PIR Sensor)
A passive infrared sensor (PIR sensor) is an electronic sensor that measures infrared (IR)
light radiating from objects in its field of view. They are most often used in PIR-based motion
detectors.PIR sensors are used to produce Infrared waves. Up to 10 meters at an angle of ± 15
degrees. The PIR (Passive-Infrared) sensor functions in the same way as an outdoor light with a
motion detector and reacts to movements made by objects that radiate heat (people and animals).
An individual PIR sensor detects changes in the amount of infrared radiation impinging upon it,
which varies depending on the temperature and surface characteristics of the objects in front of the
sensor.
2.3 ULN 2803 IC
ULN2803 is a High voltage, high current Transistor Array IC used especially with
Microcontrollers where we need to drive high power loads. Thic IC consists of a eight NPN
Darlington connected transistors with common Clamp diodes for switching the loads connected to
the output. This IC is widely used to drive high loads such Lamps, relays, motors etc. It is usually
rated at 50v/500mA.
III. WORKING
The main motive of this project is for designing a security system in those places where no
person are allowed to enter. If any movement occurs in that particular place then the bulb will
glow up or we can use buzzer in place of bulb so that the buzzer will get on. Basically this project
works with the PIR sensor. The main function of PIR sensor is here to detect the Human body
movement, whenever there is any body movement the temperature of infrared will get vary and
from that a signal is generated so as to bring into switching mode by using transistor to switch. For
switching we use 555 timer to increase the time duration of glowing the bulb. When we get the
signal the bulb has to be set ON to 2 or 3 seconds. The output signal of the IC 555 is to be given
to ULN 2308 IC and that from ULN to relay so as to drive the signal.
IV. RESULT
The result shows the final hardware design of the proposed system. This result clearly
shows how all the components required for our system is connected.

V. CONCLUSION
Hereby we come to an end of or project “MOTION DETECTOR USING PIR
SENSOR”. This project gives us an idea to detect the motion. This project can be used anywhere
either at home or offices. This is also cost efficient. Thus by this attempt of ours circuit can be used
as protecting device and can be used for security also. It can be used as a kind of anti-theft device.
It is very much cost efficient and can be used easily and efficiently.
