Q4 Math 7 Week 6
Q4 Math 7 Week 6
In the analysis of data, we have what we called summary measures which are numbers that measure
various properties of data. There are important types of summarizing measures: the Measures of Central Tendency and
the Measures of Variability. Let us discuss in this lesson all about the measures of central tendency.
The Measures of Central Tendency is any measure representing the center of a set of data arranged in a decreasing
or increasing order of magnitude. These measures include the mean, median, and mode.
Consider the set of data in the table.
3 5 2 4 6
Now, let us move some of the counters so that all stacks are of the same height.
All the stacks have 4 counters. The set of data can be described by the number 4. It is the mean of the set of data.
From the conversation above, who has better scores, Rodley or Shidel? Why?
In comparing numbers, we need to find a single number that will represent the entire distribution. In this case,
the mean or average will give us the best idea of who scored better. The mean is commonly referred to as the average of all
values. It is the most popular among the measures of central tendency for it is widely used. However, it is affected by extreme
values. To compute the mean, add all the scores and divide the sum by the number of scores. The mean is denoted by the
symbol, 𝒙̅, read as “𝑥 bar.”
Example 1
Find the mean scores of the two learners.
Rodley’s Scores: 8, 7, 10, 7, 12, 11, 8. Shidel’s Scores: 6, 8, 11, 7, 11, 12 and 15.

Shidel has a higher mean which is 10 than Rodley who has 9. Therefore, Shidel has better scores than Rodley.
Σ𝑥
In the formula, 𝑥̅ = , 𝑥̅ is the mean; Σ𝑥 is the sum of the scores; n is the total frequency.

Example 2:
Example 1
What is the median score given Rodley’s score? 8, 7, 10, 7, 12, 11, 8
7 7 8 8 10 11 12
The median score is 8. (In symbol: 𝑥̃ = 8)
Example 2
Find the median in the set of scores: 84, 96, 71, 82, 67, and 92.
First we arrange the given scores from lowest to highest. Since there are six scores, the middle scores are 82 and 84.
67, 71, ⏟
82, 84 , 92, 96
82+84 166
We get the average of 82 and 84: = = 83. Hence, the median score is 83 or 𝑥̃ = 83.
2 2
Mode
The mode is the most frequently occurring score. The symbol denotes the mode, 𝒙
̂, read as “𝑥 hat.”
Examples
Find the mode of the following set of numbers.
Class Interval f

To get the midpoint (x), find the average of the lower class limit and upper class limit. Such as, = 21, = 34 and so on.

To compute for the 𝒇𝒙, multiply the frequency (f) and the midpoint (x). Such as, 5 x 21 = 105, 3 x 34 = 102 and so on.

n 60
Begin with = = 30. Looking in the <cf column, we see that the 30th score fails in the interval 67-79, which is the median class.

Thus, the lower class boundary is equal to 66.5 (67 – 0.5 = 66.5) and the frequency is 17.
