Vinyl Acetate Monomer, VAM

acetic acid, vinyl ester; 1-acetoxyethylene

Introduction Vinyl acetate monomer (VAM) is a clear, colorless liquid with a slightly sweet and pungent odor.
It's comprised of a polymerizable vinyl functional group on one end and a reactive acetate group
on the other end. It is slightly miscible with water, soluble in most organic solvents and has
relatively low volatility. Its vapor is heavier than air. It copolymerizes readily with a wide variety of
monomers. The added acetate group imparts properties such as durability, strength, transparency
and an elevated Tg.

Applications Vinyl acetate can be homopolymerized into polyvinyl acetate (PVA, PVAc), or co-polymerized with
ethylene to form ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) to form polymers with good adhesion properties.
The EVA polymer exhibits good crack and puncture resistance and is often copolymerized with
LDPE and LLDPE to improve flexibility and low temperature performance of the copolymer,
particularly in packaging applications. These products exhibit transparency, high impact strength
and UV stability. PVA is readily converted to Polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) and used in a variety of
coating applications. VAM can impart some of the following properties to polymers and copolymers
such as PVA,EVA and PVOH.

• Impact strength, flexibility, durability, toughness

• Weather resistance, moisture resistance
• Crosslinking sites, ester group reacts with isocyanate, anhydrides and epoxy resins
• Corrosion, fogging, and abrasion resistance, as well as contribute to low odor, color, and
volatility.
• Vinyl Acetate monomer is also used in the manufacture of paints, coatings, adhesives
and binders, films, wire and cable, inks and concrete additives.
