Job purpose:
This role will be responsible for ensuring that our adoption of tools and technologies for data science is right to enable
us to analyse the whole range of data available to us. The role will include understanding the capabilities and
requirements within our data science function to ensure our analytical solutions incorporate the best engineering
practices, efficiencies and deliver high quality outputs.
Key accountabilities:
To assist in the development and implementation of technology and processes that deliver real value to UCAS’ data
science teams, enabling the use of a multitude of data sources, onward linking and the understanding of these data.
To develop and maintain a close relationship with UCAS Technology colleagues, ensuring our new technologies are
in line with UCAS’ technology strategy and our data can be used across the UCAS business.
To work with Technology colleagues on the adoption of data warehousing technologies and facilitate the
integration of existing data and processes to maintain existing outputs.
To ensure information governance policies are adhered to and the data protection principles underpin the business
unit’s work.
Act as a role model to the business unit and organisation, upholding the team’s culture and standards and
demonstrating UCAS values.
Skills, qualifications, and experience:
Data science and engineering
Qualified to a high level in a numerate discipline, such as mathematics, statistics, computer science, operational
research, data science, or a related field – evidenced through a Bachelor’s degree (or higher) or demonstrable
experience.
At least three years of strong experience of data analytic technologies and languages.
Knowledge of cloud-based infrastructure and virtualised platforms (AWS), infrastructure as code (Terraform),
automated scalable dataflows (Apache NiFi), ETL tools (Talend, AWS Glue) and application hosting technologies
(Docker).
Knowledge of Git, YAML, Apache Spark, H2O.ai, R, Python and CI/CD methodologies.
Advanced knowledge of statistical software and programming expertise across analysis methods, data creation,
data linking and analytical reporting.
