cally and mark centres along the longer edge on the WS of
41. c) both the exterior and lining panels.

NOTE: Zipper panels should be shorter than the zip-

per however, to make the diagrams clear the zipper is
shorter so you can see the zipper panels.
10
42. Take both assembled EXTERIOR PANELS and both assembled LINING PANELS, fold them in half vertically and mark
the centres at the top and bottom on the WS.
43. Start by pinning an assembled LINING PANEL to
one lining ZIPPER PANEL piece. Push the exterior
ZIPPER PANEL out of the way by folding it towards the
zipper, and start by pinning the centre mark at the top
of the LINING panel to the centre mark on the ZIPPER
PANEL lining piece on one side of your assembled
zipper panel, RST.
Pin together from Pin together from the
the centre to the Pin here centre towards one top Then pin the rest of the LINING panel to the rest of the
other top corner 1st corner ZIPPER PANEL lining piece starting from the centre
marks and pinning towards the top corners of the LIN-
ING panel. You will need to curve and ease the zipper
panel to follow the top curve of the LINING panel. Sew
together with 3/8” seam allowance. Press and topstitch
seam allowance towards zipper panel, along outer
edge of the zipper panel.

43. Repeat this step to sew the remaining LINING pan-

el to the other ZIPPER PANEL lining piece on the
other side of the zipper.

44. Repeat step 43 to attach both assembled EXTERIOR PANELS to your exterior ZIPPER PANELS. When pinning the
panels, make sure that the exterior and lining panels match at the ends of your zipper panels to make sewing the ends
easier in the final step.
45. Sewing your O-ring Connector:
45. a) Take one O-RING CONNECTOR and draw a horizontal
line through the centre on the WS.

a) b) Fold in each half towards the centre line, WST. If you’re

using fabric, press. If you’re using cork/vinyl, you’ll need to
fold and sew at the same time.
b)
c) Sew each half with 1/8” seam allowance from the centre.

c) d) Slip the strap through one O-ring then fold the strap in
half, WST, so the raw ends meet. The raw edges at the
centre should be encased in the middle. Sew the strap lay-
ers together starting at the bottom raw edge with 1/8” seam
raw end allowance from the edge, towards the O-ring. Sew across
d) the bottom of the O-ring then down towards the raw ends
with 1/8” seam allowance.

Repeat this step for second O-RING CONNECTOR and

second O-ring.

raw end
46. Place one O-RING CONNECTOR at each end of your
ZIPPER PANEL (should have panels attached at this point
but not shown in diagram on the left), with the raw edges
aligned with the zipper ends. Baste in place, making sure
the O-RING CONNECTORS are centered over the zipper
teeth. If you used a longer zipper, you may want to trim
the end and seal them to stop them from fraying. Open up
your main zipper part way.
46.

47. Take your assembled exterior and lining GUSSETS and fold in half vertically. Mark the centre along both longer sides.

48. Follow the diagram closely and start by pinning the EXTERIOR panel with the zipper pocket to the exterior GUSSET
with the gusset zipper pocket on the left. Start by pinning at the bottom centre marks. Then pin the two top corners and
then pin the rest of the GUSSET to the EXTERIOR panel. Sew together with 3/8” seam allowance, making sure you are
not sewing your LINING panel, only the EXTERIOR panel. Repeat this step to sew the other side of the exterior GUSSET
to the other EXTERIOR panel.
49. Repeat step 48 to sew the lining GUSSET to both assembled LINING panels however this time, start with 3/8” seam
allowance and increase to 1/2” seam allowance (or 5/8” if you prefer) along the sides and bottom and return to 3/8” seam
allowance at the other top corner. Clip seam allowance along the curves.

50. b)

50. a)

50. a) To box your corners, align the seams of your LINING and EXTERIOR GUSSETS and flatten all the layers together.

b) Sew across the end with 1/2” seam allowance through all the layers, making sure to backstitch. Turn your bag RS out
to verify that your corners are nicely sewn then turn WS out again. Since this area needs to carry the weight of the bag,
it is better to sew across 2 or 3 times, each seam 1/8” apart towards the raw edges. Turn your bag RS out through the
opening you left in the bottom of your interior zipper pocket. Sew the bottom of the pocket shut.

12
51. Take your SHOULDER STRAP and draw a horizontal
line through the centre on the WS.
51.
52. Slip your SHOULDER STRAP through the ring of both
1.5” swivels. Bring the shorter ends of your SHOULDER
STRAP RST and sew together with 1/4” seam allowance.
Open seam allowance and topstitch along both sides.
52.
53. Fold in each half of the SHOULDER STRAP towards
the centre line, WST. If you’re using fabric, press. If you’re
using cork/vinyl, you’ll need to fold and sew at the same
time. Move the swivels out of the way as needed. You
should have a loop with 2 swivels attached. Move each
53. swivel so they are at opposite ends of your strap loop and
flatten your loop with the raw edges are encased in the
middle.

54. Sew the strap loop in place as shown by the red

dashed lines in the diagram on the left. Clip one swivel to
each O-ring.
