Travelling Salesman Problem


Introduction
Karnataka is well known for its magnificent waterfalls across the nation. It has a total
of 544 waterfalls, more than any other Indian state. The beauty of these waterfalls
attracts thousands of tourists towards them. These waterfalls not only attract
tourists, but they also attract numerous tours and travels who want to gain profit.
One of these tours and travels companies is my firm, CR Tours and Travels. Our
customers are a group of researchers from Indonesia who have come to Karnataka to
write research paper on Karnataka’s waterfalls.
In this document, we apply Travelling Salesman Problem to find the shortest time to
travel 8 highest rated waterfalls (according to Google Maps) in Karnataka to create
the perfect travel plan for our customers.

Exploration
The 8 waterfalls we are going to visit are mentioned below:
1. Hebbe Falls (4.7/5⭐)
2. Jog Falls (4.6/5⭐)
3. Unchalli Falls (4.6/5⭐)
4. Irrupu Falls (4.5/5⭐)
5. Gokak Falls (4.5/5⭐)
6. Sathodi Falls (4.5/5⭐)
7. Shivanasamudra Falls (4.4/5⭐)
8. Abbey Falls (4.1/5⭐)
The tourist group for whom this plan is being made is staying in Bangalore, therefore
our journey will start and end in Bangalore.
In the map above, the waterfalls are marked with red stars, and the start and end
location is marked with a black star. Now, we have the locations finalized and also
have the map.
We now create a table containing the time taken to travel by road from two different
locations. The table will help us find the shortest route to complete our tour.

Proposed Path
Taking Bangalore as the starting point, by using nearest neighbourhood algorithm,
we get the following path:
- Bangalore -> Shivanasamudra Falls (2hrs 45mins)
- Shivanasamudra Falls -> Irrupu Falls (4 hrs)
- Irrupu Falls -> Abbey Falls (2 hrs)
- Abbey Falls -> Hebbe Falls (5hrs 30mins)
- Hebbe Falls -> Jog Falls (4 hrs)
- Jog Falls -> Unchalli Falls (1hr 30mins)
- Unchalli Falls -> Sathodi Falls (3 hrs)
- Sathodi Falls -> Gokak Falls (5 hrs)
- Gokak Falls -> Bangalore (10 hrs)

Total Time Taken


2hrs 45mins+4hrs+2hrs+5hrs 30mins+4hrs+1hr
30mins+3hrs+5hrs+10hrs = 37hours 45mins
The Perfect Plan
Day 1
CR Tours and travels bus picks up the researchers at 6 am and the journey towards
Shivanasamudra Falls (2hrs 45mins, 134kms) begins. Reach Shivanasamudra Falls at
around 8:45 am. Have breakfast on the way. Start moving towards Irrupu Falls
(4hrs, 200kms). Stop for having lunch and reach Irrupu Falls by 3 pm. After visiting
Irrupu Falls, check-in at hotel Novotel for overnight stay. Bonfire at hotel.

Day 2
Start moving towards Abbey Falls (2hrs, 80kms) from hotel at 8am after having
breakfast. Reach Abbey Falls by 10am. Eat lunch and move towards Hebbe Falls.
Reach Hebbe Falls (5hrs 30mins, 212kms) before 5pm. Leave for Jog Falls (4hrs,
183kms) by 7pm. Stay at hotel near Jog Falls.

Day 3
Have breakfast at hotel and visit Jog Falls. Start towards Unchalli Falls (1hr 30mins,
54kms) at 11am. Have lunch on the way and research at Unchalli Falls. Get back to
the bus and leave for Sathodi Falls (3hrs, 108kms) by 3pm. Check-in at hotel near
Sathodi Falls at 6pm. Overnight stay at hotel.
Day 4
Go to Sathodi Falls early in the morning. Leave for Gokak Falls (5hrs, 220kms)
before 11 am. Reach at Gokak Falls at 4pm and research there. After completing the
research, start overnight journey back to Bangalore (10hrs, 575kms).
End of Journey.

Conclusion
The travelling salesman problem has enabled CR Tours & Travels in creating the
ideal research tour for the Indonesian researchers. The journey is completed in 5
days and a total of 37 hours and 45 minutes on the road. The TSP allows us to visit
each waterfall without having to go there twice. The nearest neighbour algorithm
assisted us in determining the shortest route and the upper bound for the entire trip.
