ONCAMPUS Scheme of Work: Academic Year 2022-23
Content synopsis
The MUFP chemistry module has been carefully designed to cover most relevant chemistry content at A level that students will need to have a strong
chemistry foundation to study medicine at undergraduate level. For each topic that they study, they are advised to think like healthcare practitioners,
particularly on the application aspects. During the course, they will study Module 1 (Foundation Chemistry), Module 2 (Practical Skills) and Module 3 (mostly
Organic and Physical Chemistry). The depth of study on each topic depends on how important the topic is relevant to medicine at this stage.
Module 1
Atomic Structure
Formulae, Equations and Moles
2
Structure and Bonding
The Periodic Table
Introduction to Oxidation and Reduction (Redox)
Module 2
This module is aimed to develop practical skills, communication, independent working as well as team working skills. Students will do a total of 6 lab
practicals and 2 of these will be assessed. The two assessed lab practicals will be assessed differently and the assessment methods include tutor observations,
lab report and a practical-based written examination.
Please note, if for whatever reason, it is not possible to use the laboratories for practical assessments, suitable video clips would be used as the basis for the
assessed lab report and no practical-based written examination would be taken.
Module 3
Energetics
Kinetics 1
Chemical Equilibria 1
Introduction to Organic Chemistry
Further Organic Chemistry (Alcohols, Carbonyl Compounds, Amines and Amides)
Acid-Base Equilibria
Kinetics 2
Chemical Equilibria 2
Spectroscopy
3
Module assessment methods:
Formative Assessments
Summative Assessments
Term Assessment number Assessment type Assessment name Module weighting Pass mark*
2&3 8 Practical + lab report Reaction Kinetics 15% 70%
9 Practical + exam Titration 15% 70%
11 Written Exam M3 Final Exam 70% 70%
*Please note students may require an alternative grade for progression depending on their chosen pathway. For progression to medicine, they will need to
achieve a minimum of 70%.
4
Practical skills assessments (Module 2)
Students will carry out a total number of 7 lab practicals during this module. 2 will count towards their final grade as shown in the following table.
Practical Assessment Lab Practical Name Assessment method Duration Module weighting
Number Number (hrs)
*Lab practicals will take place from term 2 and ideally must be completed at least 2 weeks before the M3 examination (first - sitting). The pass mark for
each summative assessment is 40% but an overall mark of 70% is required for progressing to most 5-Yr medical undergraduate courses.
