C1L3 - Limit of Trigonometric Functions

The document discusses trigonometric function limits. It defines trigonometric functions using angles and triangles in a unit circle. It then lists the six basic trig functions and some identities and equivalents. It provides tips for solving trig limits, such as using identities or direct substitution. Examples are worked through, and an exercise set is provided to help students practice limits of trig functions.

Limit of Trigonometric Functions

(Chapter 1 – Lesson 3)

Trigonometric functions are used to find for the coordinate of a point in a circle
with the use of the angle. These functions are made through the triangles formed when
the point on the circle, the center, and the horizontal line are connected.
Consider the graph of a unit circle below,
y-axis

P(a,o)

r=1
o
θ x-axis
a

Notes: o stands for opposite side, a is for adjacent side, and r=h for hypotenuse

Tips in Solving Limits of Trigonometric Functions

1. Test whether direct substitution is applicable.
2. If direct substitution is not applicable, determine which of the above identities
can be used to solve.
3. Manipulate the expression based on the different methods in solving
identities.
