familiarize himself with both the metric and apothecaries’ system and their equivalents.

The following commonly used equivalents are approximate, but are accurate for ordinary dosages.
APPROXIMATE EQUIVALENTS:

1 milligram (mg)……. 0.001gm ……………. 1/60 grain (gr) ……… gram 10

1 centigram ………… 0.010 gm …………… 1/6 grain
1 decigram …………. 0.100 gm …………… 1 & ½ grains
1 gram (gm) ………... 1.00 gm …………….. 15 grains
1 kilogram (kg) …….. 1000.0 gm ………….. 32 ounces or 2 & 2/3 pounds
1 microgram (ug) ….. 0.000001 gm ………. gram 10-6
1 nanogram (ng) or 1 millimicrogram ………. Gram 10-9 or 0.000001 gm

APOTHECARIES’ SYSTEM:

The unit of measurement is 1 grain, which is equivalent to approximately 0.06 gm in the metric system. 1 gram
is approximately equal to 15 grains (gr).
20 grains (gr) ………………. 1 scruple
3 scruples or 60 gr …………. 1 dram
480 gr or 8 drams ………….. 1 ounce (oz)

The unit measurement is the minim, which is equal to 0.06 ml.

1 milliliter (ml) ………….. 15 minims ……………. 1/30 fluid ounces (fl. oz.)
60 minims ……………… 1 fluid dram …………… 4 ml
8 fluid drams …………… 1 fluid oz ……………… 30 ml
16 fkl. oz. ………………… 1 pint …………………. 500 ml

To prepare doses from full strength drugs.
1. Prepare 500 mg of ampicillin for intravenous injection from ampicillin trihydrate for injection, U.S.P., which
contain 1000 mg in a vial, dissolved in 5 ml. Distilled water.

2. Prepare 500,000 units of procaine penicillin G and buffered crystalline penicillin G for intramuscular injection
from sterile procaine penicillin G and buffered crystallin penicillin G suspension, U.S.P., which contains 4,000.000
units, to be dissolved in 5 ml distilled water. Label the strength of the solution remaining in the vial after the dose
has been administered.

To prepare doses of drugs based on the weight of a person:

1. How much erythromycin will you give a child weighing 44 lbs. Who need 50 mg/kg BW/day? What is the total
dose to be given if the drug is needed for 10 days? Preparation is 200 mg/5 ml in 60 ml bottle.

2. Ampicillin is usually given at a dose of 50-100 mg/kg BW/day in child. Basing on a 100 mg/kg BW/day, how
