Why study artS?Speakartloud.wordpress.com/2010/04/23/41

1. ART IS A NATURAL HUMAN BEHAVIOR.

Creating Art is a primal behaviour. Children, the world over, instinctively make. Every
culture has art. Like language and laughter, art is a fundamental human behaviour. Art
is a part of who we are. We need art because it makes us complete human beings.

2. ART IS COMMUNICATION.
Art, like language, is a medium to express ideas and to share information. Art offers
us a method to communicate what we may not necessarily fully understand or know
how to express. Art helps us to share thoughts, ideas, and visions that may not be
able to be articulated any other way. We need art to have a full range of
expression.

3. ART IS HEALING.
Creating or experiencing art can relax and sooth us or it may enliven and stimulate us.
The process of creating art engages both the body and the mind and provides us with
time to look inward and reflect. Experiencing art also gives us reason to think and be
reflective or may inspire us to get up and dance. Art provides a release, a place for
reflection and away to engage our whole selves. .We need art to keep us healthy.

4. ART TELLS OUR STORY.

Art is a history lesson, an historical record, a preservation of culture, and an
autobiography all in one. Art documents events and experiences and allows us a
richer understanding of history. Art reflects cultural values, beliefs and identity and
helps to preserve the many different communities that make up our world. Art
chronicles our own lives and experiences over time. We need art to understand and to
share our individual and shared history.

5. ART IS A SHARED EXPERIENCE.

The creation of art is a collective activity. Art forms such as dance, theatre and choir
all require a group of artists and an audience. Even the solitary painter or poet relies
upon the craft of the paint-maker or book-binder to help create art. Art offers us a
reason to come together and share in an experience. We need art to keep us
connected.

Philippine arts as filipino

Many scholars debate on the identity of art produced by Filipinos. Are they 100% authentic Philippine
art? Many question the rootedness of the artworks produced by Filipino artists. Are landscape paintings of
Fernando Amorsolo or the historical depictions of Carlos “Botong” Francisco genuinely Filipino? Are the stories
and poems in English written by N.V.M. Gonzales or Edith Tiempo Filipino?

The speculations on the “Filipino-ness” of works by Filipino artists is caused by our colonial history and
migrant reality.
The plethora of influences brought by the Spaniards, Americans and other Asian countries has become
pat of our identity evident in our art.
Across the world, Filipinos have adapted to foreign culture.
According to Leo Benesa, a Filipino poet, there is a certain characteristic of Filipino Art. As long as the
work shows the Filipino way of living(e.g. spending day in a market, doing laundry in the river, or
attending fiesta in the town), it is closest to the spirit to the Filipino soul and native soil

Both subject and medium of those artworks dictates the authenticity of the artworks produced by Filipino
Artists.
Benesa describes Amorsolo’s works as “the most expressive of the ethos of the race and the
predominantly agricultural countryside.”
Amorsolo’s works depict life in the fields. Men and women are portrayed in hard work but with smiles in
their faces. The lansdscapes features rural land in the Philippines.
The combination of all these elements in Amorsolo’s body of work make his artworks representative of
the Filipino.

LESSON
ArtS in contemporary times
2

2
EXPECTED SKILLS:
define contemporary arts;
 determine the characteristics of contemporary arts;
 familiarize with the elements and principles of contemporary arts;
 create an integrated artwork that demonstrates the interrelationship between the arts and their
elements; and
 show appreciation of the arts in contemporary times.

Let’s get started

Artists, craftspeople and designers
use a broad range of materials, techniques
and processes in their work, sometimes
combining traditional craft with
contemporary art and design in innovative
ways. Substances or materials used in the
creation of works of art, as well as any
production or manufacturing techniques,
processes or methods incorporated in the
manufacture thereof. This information
includes a description of both the materials
https://www.virtosuart.com/images/2019/blog-
used to create the work and the way in new/modernart/14702374_1286816858029737_548631409324178242_n.jpg
which they have been put together.
Developments in new technologies have brought a wealth of new opportunities to the creative
process. Practitioners’ use of materials, techniques and processes has a direct bearing on the look and
feel of artefacts and products, their presentation and the cost of production. The aim of this lesson is to
develop learners’ knowledge, skills and understanding in working safely and creatively with the
materials, techniques and processes associated with their specialist pathway. It will enable learners to
explore, experiment with and understand the use of a range of materials, techniques and processes.

The traditional elements and principles of art, and their use in the art of the past, often seem
beside the point or purposefully set aside in the work of postmodern artists. For much contemporary
art or art being made today, the content or meaning is more important than the materials or forms
used to make it. Until very recently, artists were making art that would engage viewers visually
through subject matter and the composition of elements and principles. Contemporary artists seem to
be more interested in engaging viewers conceptually through ideas and issues. The elements of art,
while still present at times, are often not adequate to understanding the meaning of contemporary art.

CONTEMPORARY ARTS?
CONTEMPORARY
 It comes from the Latin word “contemporarius”. Con means “ together with” and tempus, tempor
which means “time”.

CONTEMPORARY ARTS (ConArts)

 It is usually used in the sense of being the “the art of the present”.
 It is the art that springs out of the present-day events and passions of the society.
 It is the newest form of art, amusing people from the middle to the late 20th century up to this
very minute.
 It functions as culturally diverse and technology-oriented.
 It is a combination of mixed styles, materials, techniques and concepts that challenges tradition
 It belongs to your time and serves as a form of expression of the people’s present feelings and
longings.
 This is an art that has a world view and is sensitive to the changing times.
 ConArts today are not restricted to the individual experience of the artist but is reflective of the
world that we live in.

Characteristics of ConArts
 Refers to the characteristic of Contemporary Art in which the artist is free to
Integrative integrate any medium and any art or style in order to express their artistic
intention, without being limited to conform to a stylistic trend in order to be
called contemporary.
 It emphasizes on how the artist starts not with a final product in
Processed-based mind, but instead begins with the development of a concept
and then subsequently proceeds with realizing the idea.

 It allows for an artwork’s meaning to have a direct relationship to

Site-specific a specific location where it is seen or experienced.
 Changing the location of the work would mean a change in the
interpretation of its value or meaning.

 The end product is created with the involvement of two or more artists.
 Collaborative artworks often present multiple perspectives on one
Collaborative main idea, factored with spontaneous results, thus possess more
complex avenues for analysis.
 Recognizes how the audience has the potential to change or add to
the meaning of an artwork.
Interactive  The work is then designed in way that the audience is asked or
encouraged to interact with the piece or certain elements of it; the
effects of this process are included in the analysis of the artist’s intent.

Principles and Elements of ConArts

1. APPROPRIATION
 It is the process of making new content by taking from another source pre-existing image — books on art
history, ads, the media — and incorporating or combining it with new ones.
 Existing artworks are “appropriated” to form another artwork.
 The use of prints, images and icons to produce another art form is a feature of contemporary arts.
 It combines the past with the present.
 By appropriation, contemporary artist revives interest to existing forms of art.
 Appropriation is a three-dimensional variant of using found objects in painting. To appropriate is to
borrow.
 A found object is an actual object— often a manufactured product of a commonplace nature — given a
new identity as an artwork or part of an art piece.

2. performance
 It regularly increases drama, often taking action and
development to extremes of expression and continuity that are
not allowed within the theater.
 According to the Walker Art Center, performance artists have
tried to interpret various human activities from ordinary
activities such as chores, routines and rituals, to socially relevant
themes such as poverty, commercialism, and war.
 Performance art refers to art activities that are presented to a
live audience and can combine music, dance, poetry, theater,
visual art and video. Whether public, private or videotaped,
performance art often involves an artist performing an action
that can be planned and scripted, or can emphasize Yuan Moro Ocampo performing “The
Shadow” in Denmark

Contemporary Philippine Arts from the Regions | Module 1
 Performative art describes the exploration by artists of the
processes, movements and actions they use to create art. These
acts are often more important to the practice of artists than the
finished art objects. Some artists turn their bodies into
paintbrushes or musical instruments or raw materials for the
finished product. Others create public or private performances,
rituals, or multimedia events.

3. space
 Space is an art transforming space, for example the flash mobs, and art installations in malls and
parks.
 It also refers to the distances or areas surrounding, within, and within the components of a item.
 Space can be either positive or negative, open or closed, shallow or deep, and two-or three-
dimensional.
 Often space is not clearly shown in a piece, but it is an illusion. It is considered as the breath of art.
 Space is found in almost every piece of art that has been made.
 Painters make space, photographers capture space, sculptors depend on space and shape, and
architects create space. This is a central aspect of every of the visual arts.
 Space provides the audience a guide for the presentation of an artwork. For example, you can draw
a larger object than another to suggest that it is closer to the viewer. Likewise, a piece of
environmental art can be installed in a way that leads the viewer through space.
 Site-specific art forms are performed and positioned in specific spots, especially in public places.

4. Hybridity
1. It is a usage of unconventional materials, mixing of unlikely materials to produce and art work. For
example, coffee for painting, miniature sculptures from pencils.
2. The concept of hybridity when applied to culture conveys elements of all of these definitions, including
positive elements such as diversity, and cooperation, as well as negative elements such as unviable
offspring and unnatural monsters. In this way the term hybridity contains conflicting connotations.
3. Hybridity, at the most basic level, implies the mixing of two or more elements to create a third. Beyond this
there is some discussion as to what cultural hybridity means.
4. This hybridity in art practice is about transcendence, beyond the visual logic of the digital or material.
5. In the fluid transaction between states of existence, algorithm and human error, and different forms of
media, something metaphysical starts to surface in the space between. The concept of hybridity can be
applied to two aspects of art today.
6. Artists today are comfortable using whatever seems best to fully investigate and express their ideas or
concepts and often move among different media and techniques to express new things in their work.
7. One approach to understanding art today involves identifying what media and materials the artists chose
and considering why they chose to work with them.

 Technology is a reality in the present-

day world, and contemporary artists
have used technology in the creation
and dissemination of works of art.
 MTV first went into the airwaves in
1981, the video became part of
human interaction.
 The video phenomenon was further
pushed by the debut of Youtube that
allowed everyone with internet
connection to post and share videos.
 Contemporary artists have used video
