Test Power 1

The document describes several linear programming problems involving production planning and profit maximization. The first problem involves a company that produces two phone models and must determine the production quantity of each to maximize profit given constraints on circuit boards, assembly time, and demand. The second problem asks the reader to formulate a similar linear programming problem based on a manufacturing situation. The third problem involves a furniture company that must determine how many of three cabinet styles to produce each month to maximize revenue given constraints on materials and labor.

TEST 2 SEM II 2021-2022

Question 1

Analyse the problem statement below and answer the question.

WINtecH Company produces two models of telephones, P and Q. They needed to determine
the number of each type of telephone to be produced monthly, as to maximize the profit.
They produce their own circuit boards which are required for the production of the
telephones, where the cost of each circuit board is RM50. One circuit board is used in each
model P and three in each model Q. The selling price of each unit of model P and model Q
are RM250 and RM450 respectively. The costs of manufacturing each model P and each
model Q telephone are RM120 and RM200. The assembly time required to produce one unit
of model P and model Q are 0.2 hours and 0.3 hours. Our company has the capacity to
produce at most 3000 circuit boards per month and 450 hours of assembly time each
month. The production of model P telephone requires being at least 1500 units because the
demand for model type P is higher than model type Q.

From the problem description, determine the number of the telephone type to be produced
monthly using the simplex method.

(Hint: Profit = Selling Price – Cost)

TEST 1 2019-2020

Create a situation/problem that can be written as the following linear

programming problem.

Max Z=3 x1 + 4 x 2+ x 3
subject to
2 x1 +3 x 2+ 5 x 3 ≤38
4 x1 +7 x 2 +3 x3 ≤ 60
4 x1 +2 x 2+ x 3 ≤23
x1 ≥ x3
2 x2 ≥ x 3
x1, x2≥ 1

You also need to define the decision variables in your answer.

TEST 2 2019-2020

A manufacturing company produces 3 designs of sofa; type A, type B and

type C. Long-term projections indicate an expected demand of at least 150
type A, 100 type B and 80 type C sofas each month. Because of limitations on
production capacity, no more than 300 type A, 280 type B and 250 type C
sofas can be made each month. In order to satisfy a client contract, a
minimum of 1000 sofas must be sold each month. Type A requires 3 meters,
type B requires 4 meters and type C requires 4 meters of maple wood. The
available maple wood each month is 3000 meters. If each type A, type B and
type C is sold at the price of RM1550, RM1450 and RM1400, how many of
each type should be manufactured each month in order to maximize the
revenue?

TEST 1 SEM II 2020-2021

Question 1

RK Design produces two patterns of readymade kitchen cabinets. Each Pattern U

requires 15 meters of 3/4” thick solid wood frames, 30 meters of ½” thick plywood,
35 meters of ¾” thick plywood, 10 doors, and 3 drawers. Each Pattern L requires 10
meters of 3/4” thick solid wood frames, 25 meters of ½” thick plywood, 20 meters
of ¾” thick plywood, 8 doors, and 3 drawers. In each month, RK Design can stock
up to 300 meters of 3/4” thick solid wood frames, 500 meters of ½” thick plywood,
500 meters of ¾” thick plywood, 150 doors, and 100 drawers. The cost for Pattern
U is RM1500 and the cost for Pattern L is RM1200.
RK Design managed to secure a contract with a construction company that wants to
purchase kitchen cabinets Pattern U at RM2300 and Pattern L at RM1900. The
contract also states that RK Design must provide at least 50 kitchen cabinets each
month. A complete kitchen cabinet Pattern U takes 10 hours of labour meanwhile
Pattern L takes 8 hours of labour. RK Design has a limited 900 hours of labour in a
month.

a. Formulate a Linear Programming model that maximizes the profit.

(9 marks)
b. Both Pattern U and Pattern L also require at least 100 pin nails and the
company has unlimited access to them. Do you think this constraint should be
added to the model? Explain your answer.
