CH2043 - Tutorial 1

This document contains 5 problems related to heat transfer processes and equipment: 1) Determining the rate of heat loss from air in a duct where the air temperature drops by 3°C. 2) Calculating the inlet air velocity and exit air temperature in an air conditioning duct where heat is transferred to the air. 3) Finding the final pressure and heat transfer amount for a gas cooled in a rigid tank from 550K to 350K.

Heat Transfer Processes and Equipment

1. The ducts of an air heating system pass through an unheated area. As a result of heat losses,
the temperature of the air in the duct drops by 3°C. If the mass flow rate of air is 120
kg/min, determine the rate of heat loss from the air to the cold environment.
[Ans: 271.89 kJ/min]

2. Air enters the duct of an air-conditioning system at 103.421 kPa and 10°C at a volume
flow rate of 15 m3/min. The diameter of the duct is 24 cm and heat is transferred to the air
in the duct from the surroundings at a rate of 2 kJ/s. Determine (a) the velocity of the air
at the duct inlet and (b) the temperature of the air at the exit.
[Ans: 16.24°C]

3. A 3 m3 rigid tank contains hydrogen at 250 kPa and 550 K. The gas is now cooled until its
temperature drops to 350 K. Determine (a) the final pressure in the tank and (b) the amount
of heat transfer.
[Ans: 159.1 kPa, 686.2 kJ]

4. Nitrogen at 100 kPa and 25°C in a rigid vessel is heated until its pressure is 300 kPa.
Calculate the heat transferred during this process, in kJ/kg.
[Ans: 442.8 kJ/kg]

5. 1000 kg of liquid water at 50°C is bought into a well-insulated and well-sealed 4 m × 5 m

× 6 m room initially at 15°C and 95 kPa. Assuming constant specific heats for both air and
water at room temperature, determine the final equilibrium temperature in the room.
[Ans: 49.2°C]
