Lab1 - ELECTRONIC COMPONENT MEASUREMENT LATEST

The document describes a lab experiment on measuring electronic components using a multimeter. The objectives are to learn how to use a multimeter to measure resistance, voltage, and current. The experiment involves using a simulated circuit created with Tinkercad online software to measure the values of resistors with different resistance levels and measure voltage and current in various circuit configurations. Tables are included to record the measurement results. Questions are asked about the circuit connections and what would happen if an ammeter was connected in parallel with a component.

3.0 SYNOPSIS & THEORY

Analog multimeter is simple, inexpensive and easy to use. It is analog device and performs
ammeter, ohmmeter and voltmeter function. The meter uses a d’Arsonval movement (a
moving coil inside a magnetic field) which draws current from the circuit under test.

Precaution when using the analog multimeter;

i) Select panel properly before make any measurement
ii) Set panel selection to high value if you unknown the measure value
iii)Never place the ammeter in parallel with a circuit component and fuse will blow
iv) When measure voltage place panel to voltmeter
v) Never use the ohmmeter in alive circuit or supply

4.0 PROCEDURE
Part A – Tinkercad
1. Go to tinkercad.com and create your own account.
2. In tinkercad.com/dashboard, select ‘Create new Circuit’
3. Search for all the components below and drag to the main screen:
i) Breadboard
ii) Power Supply
iii) Multimeter x 2
iv) Resistor x 4
Part B – Resistor measurement
1. Click at each resistor and set the value to 1Kohm, 1.5 Kohm, 2.7 Kohm and 5.6 Kohm.
JTKEK/ BEEC 1303/1(5)

2. Take note at the color code of the resistors and make sure you can identify the resistor
value based on the color code.
3. Fill in the color code and resistor values in the Table 1.
4. Try use a multimeter to measure the resistors and record the value by completing
Table 1. Make sure that the multimeter mode selector is changed to ‘Resistance’.
5. Complete Table 1.
Part C – Measure voltage and current in circuit
1. Create new circuit and name it as “<NAME>-LAB1-PARTC1”.
2. Construct the circuit as shown in Figure 1 below. Connect the resistors on a
breadboard and use the Power Supply as the DC Voltage.

Figure 1
3. Set the DC voltage at 5V. Set the multimeter mode to ‘Voltage’.
4. Click the ‘Start Simulation’ button and measure the voltage power supply and voltage
drop at each resistor.
5. Record the reading in Table 2.
6. Change the DC voltage to 10V and repeat step 4 and 5.
7. Create new circuit and name it as “<NAME>-LAB1-PARTC2”.
8. Construct circuit as shown in Figure 2. Set the input DC voltage to 5V and measure
the current as in Figure 2. Set the multimeter mode to ‘Amperage’.

9. Increase the input voltage to 10V. Record the reading in Table 2.

10. Construct circuit as shown in Figure 3.

Figure 3
11. Set the input voltage to 5V and measure voltage across each resistor R1 and R2.
Record the reading in Table 3.
12. Increase the input voltage to 10V and measure voltage across each resistor R1 and R2.
Record your multimeter reading in Table 3.
13. Create new circuit and name it as “<NAME>-LAB1-PARTC3”.
14. Construct circuit as shown in Figure 4. Set the input voltage to 5V. Measure the
current as shown in below Figure 4. Record the reading obtained in Table 3.

15. Once again, increase the input voltage to 10V. Measure the current for all the
location as shown in Figure 4. Record the reading obtained.
